    Eliphaz: Job Does Not Fear God

    Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

    — Отвечает ли мудрый знанием, взятым с ветра,
    наполняет ли свой живот палящим вихрем?

    Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

    Возражает ли он пустыми словами,
    речами, в которых нет прока?

    Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

    А ты и страх перед Богом потерял,
    и молитву к Богу считаешь малостью.

    Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

    Твой грех побуждает твои уста,
    ты усвоил язык нечестивых.

    For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

    Твои же уста обвиняют тебя, не я;
    губы твои против тебя свидетельствуют.

    Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

    What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

    С нами седовласые и старики,
    старше, чем твой отец.

    With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

    добрых слов, что тебе сказали?

    Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

    Почему увлекает тебя твое сердце,
    почему сверкают твои глаза,

    Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

    так что ты обратил против Бога свой дух,
    что твой рот выговаривает такие слова?

    That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

    Кто такой человек, чтобы ему быть чистым,
    и рожденный женщиной, чтобы быть праведным?

    What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

    Если Бог и святым36 Своим не доверяет,
    и в глазах Его нечисты небеса,

    Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

    то тем более нечист и порочен человек,
    который пьет неправду, словно воду!

    How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

    Послушай меня, и я объясню тебе;
    расскажу тебе то, что видел,

    I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

    то, о чем говорили мудрецы,
    не скрывая усвоенного от отцов

    Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

    (им одним земля была отдана,
    и чужой среди них не ходил).

    Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

    Все дни свои мучается нечестивый,
    отсчитаны все годы притеснителя.

    The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

    В его ушах — гул ужаса;
    средь мира к нему приходит губитель.

    A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

    От мглы он не надеется спастись;
    он обречен на меч.

    He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

    Он — скиталец, пища для стервятника37;
    он знает, что день мрака близок.

    He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

    Беда и горе его пугают;
    теснят, словно царь, что готов на битву,

    Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

    за то, что простер против Бога руку
    и Всемогущему бросил вызов,

    For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

    шел на Него упрямо и дерзко
    с толстым крепким щитом.

    He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:

    За то, что заплыло жиром лицо его,
    жир нарастил он у себя на бедрах,

    Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

    он поселится в городах разоренных,
    в домах, в которых никто не живет,
    в домах, обреченных на разрушение.

    And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

    Он больше не будет богатым:
    богатство его расточится,
    и владения его не расширятся по земле.38

    He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

    Он не спасется от мглы,
    пламя иссушит ветви его,
    и дыхание уст Божьих умчит его прочь.

    He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

    Пусть он не обманывается,
    полагаясь на пустоту,
    ведь пустота и будет ему воздаянием.

    Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

    Он получит сполна,
    прежде чем придет его время,
    и не будут его ветви зеленеть.

    It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

    Он сбросит незрелый виноград, как лоза,
    и растеряет свои цветы, как олива.

    He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

    Бесплодным будет безбожных сборище,
    и огонь истребит шатры вымогателей.

    For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

    Они зачали беду и родили несчастье,

    They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
