Слова Екклесиаста,1 сына Давида, царя в Иерусалиме.

The Vanity of Life

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

«Суета2 сует! —
сказал Екклесиаст. —
Суета сует,
все суета!»

“Vanity[a] of vanities,” says the Preacher;
“Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

Что приобретает человек от всех трудов своих,
которые он делает под солнцем?

What profit has a man from all his labor
In which he [b]toils under the sun?

Поколения приходят и уходят,
а земля остается навеки.

One generation passes away, and another generation comes;
But the earth abides forever.

Солнце всходит, и солнце заходит,
и вновь спешит к месту своего восхода.

The sun also rises, and the sun goes down,
And [c]hastens to the place where it arose.

Летит ветер на юг,
потом направляется к северу,
кружится, кружится
и возвращается на свои круги.

The wind goes toward the south,
And turns around to the north;
The wind whirls about continually,
And comes again on its circuit.

Все реки текут в море,
но море не переполняется.
И возвращаются реки к своим истокам,
чтобы течь снова.

All the rivers run into the sea,
Yet the sea is not full;
To the place from which the rivers come,
There they return again.

Все эти вещи утомляют:
человек не может все пересказать,
глаз не насытится тем, что видит,
ухо не наполнится тем, что слышит.

All things are [d]full of labor;
Man cannot express it.
The eye is not satisfied with seeing,
Nor the ear filled with hearing.

Что было, то и будет,
и что делалось, то и будет делаться опять.
Нет ничего нового под солнцем!

That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.

Бывает такое, о чем говорят:
«Смотри, вот что-то новое!»
Но и это уже бывало в прежние времена,
еще задолго до нас.

Is there anything of which it may be said,
“See, this is new”?
It has already been in ancient times before us.

Никто не помнит о живших прежде,
и о тех, что появятся позже,
не вспомнят те, кто будет жить после них.

There is no remembrance of former things,
Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come
By those who will come after.

Я, Екклесиаст, был царем над Израилем в Иерусалиме.

The Grief of Wisdom

I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

Я посвятил себя изучению и испытанию мудростью всего, что делается под небом. Это тяжелое бремя, которое Бог возложил на людей.

And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be [e]exercised.

Я видел все, что делается под солнцем, все — суета, и все — погоня за ветром.3

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Кривое не выпрямить,
а чего нет, того не сосчитать.

What is crooked cannot be made straight,
And what is lacking cannot be numbered.

Я сказал себе: «Величием и мудростью я превзошел всех, кто правил Иерусалимом до меня. Я приобрел много мудрости и знаний».

I communed with my heart, saying, “Look, I have attained greatness, and have gained more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My heart has [f]understood great wisdom and knowledge.”

Затем я решил узнать, в чем мудрость, а также в чем безумие и глупость, но понял, что и это погоня за ветром.

And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind.

Ведь с большой мудростью приходит много печали,
и чем больше знаний, тем больше скорбь.

For in much wisdom is much grief,
And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
