Однажды в субботу, когда Иисус пришел на обед к одному из самых уважаемых фарисеев, те внимательно следили за Ним.

Jesus Heals a Man with Dropsy

And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

Напротив Иисуса сидел человек, больной водянкой.

And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

Иисус спросил учителей Закона и фарисеев:
— Разрешено исцелять в субботу или нет?

And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

Они молчали. Тогда Иисус, коснувшись человека, исцелил его и отпустил.

And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

5

Затем Он сказал им:
— Если у кого-то из вас сын или вол упадет в колодец, разве вы не вытащите его немедленно, даже если это будет в субботу?

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

Им нечего было ответить на это.

And they could not answer him again to these things.

Иисус заметил, как гости выбирали почетные места за столом, и рассказал им притчу:

The Parable of the Guests

And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,

— Когда тебя приглашают на свадебный пир, не садись на почетное место, ведь может случиться так, что среди приглашенных окажется кто-то знатнее тебя,

When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

9

и тогда хозяин, пригласивший и тебя, и его, подойдет к тебе и скажет: «Уступи место этому человеку». И тебе придется со стыдом занять самое последнее место.

And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

10

Итак, когда тебя пригласили, пойди и сядь84 на самое последнее место, чтобы хозяин подошел к тебе и сказал: «Друг, перейди на лучшее место». Тогда тебе будет оказан почет перед всеми гостями.

But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

Так что каждый возвышающий себя будет унижен, и принижающий себя будет возвышен.

For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

12

Затем Иисус сказал хозяину:
— Когда ты устраиваешь званый обед или ужин, то не приглашай своих друзей, братьев, родственников или богатых соседей, чтобы они не пригласили тебя в ответ и тем не отплатили тебе.

Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

13

Когда ты устраиваешь пир, приглашай на него бедных, калек, хромых, слепых.

But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

14

Вот тогда ты будешь блажен, потому что они не смогут отблагодарить тебя, и ты получишь награду в воскресение праведных.

And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

15

Когда один из обедавших услышал это, он сказал Иисусу:
— Блажен тот, кто будет пировать в Царстве Божьем.

The Parable of the Banquet

And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

16

Иисус ответил ему:
— Один человек приготовил большой пир и пригласил много гостей.

Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

17

Когда подошло время пира, он послал своего слугу сказать приглашенным: «Приходите, уже все готово».

And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

18

Но один за другим приглашенные начали извиняться. Первый сказал: «Я купил землю и мне надо пойти и посмотреть ее. Извини меня, пожалуйста».

18

And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

19

Другой сказал: «Я купил пять пар волов и иду испытать их, извини меня, пожалуйста».

19

And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

20

Третий сказал: «Я женился и поэтому не могу прийти».

20

And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

21

Слуга вернулся и рассказал все хозяину. Тогда хозяин дома рассердился и приказал слуге: «Пойди скорее по улицам и переулкам города и приведи сюда бедных, калек, слепых и хромых».

So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

22

«Господин, — сказал слуга, — то, что ты повелел, выполнено, но еще есть место».

22

And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

23

Тогда хозяин сказал слуге: «Пройди по дорогам и вдоль изгородей и уговори всех, кого встретишь, прийти на пир, чтобы дом мой был полон гостей.

23

And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

24

Говорю вам, что из прежних приглашенных никто не попробует моего обеда».

For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

25

С Иисусом шло множество людей, и Он, повернувшись к ним, сказал:

The Cost of Following Jesus

And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

26

— Если кто приходит ко Мне и не возненавидит отца своего, и матери, и жены, и детей, и братьев, и сестер, а притом и самой жизни своей,85 тот не может быть Моим учеником.

26

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

27

Тот, кто не несет свой крест и не идет за Мной, не может быть Моим учеником.

27

And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

28

Предположим, кто-то из вас хочет строить башню. Разве он не сядет вначале и не подсчитает все расходы, чтобы знать, хватит ли ему денег для завершения строительства?

28

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

29

Ведь если он заложит фундамент и будет не в состоянии закончить постройку, то все видящие это будут над ним смеяться:

Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

30

«Начал строить, а закончить не можешь».

Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

31

Или, предположим, царь собирается на войну против другого царя. Разве он не сядет вначале и не подумает, в силах ли он с войском в десять тысяч человек отразить того, кто идет на него с войском в двадцать тысяч?

Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

32

Если нет, то пока противник еще далеко, он пошлет посольство просить о мире.

Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

33

Итак, тот из вас, кто не отречется от всего, что имеет, не может быть Моим учеником.

So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

Соль — хорошая вещь, но если соль потеряет свой вкус, то что может опять сделать ее соленой?

Good Salt

Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

35

Ни в землю она уже не годится, ни в навозную кучу, ее остается лишь выбросить вон. У кого есть уши, чтобы слышать, пусть слышит!

It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
