Господь сказал Самуилу:
— Сколько ты еще будешь скорбеть по Саулу? Я отверг его как царя над Израилем. Наполни рог маслом и отправляйся в путь. Я посылаю тебя к Иессею из Вифлеема. Я выбрал Себе в цари одного из его сыновей.

Samuel Anoints David as King

And Jehovah said to Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.

Но Самуил спросил:
— Как же я пойду? Саул услышит об этом и убьет меня.
Господь ответил:
— Возьми с собой телицу и скажи: «Я пришел, чтобы принести жертву Господу».

And Samuel said, How shall I go? if Saul hear [it], he will kill me. And Jehovah said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah.

Пригласи Иессея к жертве, и Я укажу тебе, что делать. Ты должен помазать Мне того, кого Я укажу.

And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will tell thee what thou shalt do; and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

Самуил сделал, как сказал Господь. Когда он пришел в Вифлеем, старейшины города с трепетом вышли ему навстречу. Они спросили:
— Ты пришел с миром?

And Samuel did what Jehovah said, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him, and said, Dost thou come peaceably?

Самуил ответил:
— Да, с миром. Я пришел, чтобы принести жертву Господу. Освятитесь и идите к жертве со мной.
Затем он освятил Иессея и его сыновей и пригласил их к жертве.

And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah. Hallow yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he hallowed Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

Когда они пришли, Самуил увидел Элиава и подумал: «Конечно, это помазанник Господа стоит здесь перед Господом».73

And it came to pass when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Jehovah's anointed is before him.

7

Но Господь сказал Самуилу:
— Не смотри на его внешность и на высокий рост, потому что Я отверг его. Господь смотрит не так, как человек. Человек смотрит на внешний вид, а Господь смотрит на сердце.

But Jehovah said to Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him; for it is not as man seeth; for man looketh upon the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh upon the heart.

Тогда Иессей позвал Авинадава и провел его перед Самуилом. Но Самуил сказал:
— Господь не выбрал и этого.

Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither has Jehovah chosen this one.

Тогда Иессей провел Шамму, но Самуил сказал:
— Господь не выбрал и этого.

Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, Neither has Jehovah chosen this one.

Иессей провел перед Самуилом семерых своих сыновей, но Самуил сказал ему:
— Господь не выбрал их.

And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, Jehovah has not chosen these.

Он спросил Иессея:
— Все ли твои сыновья здесь?
— Есть еще самый младший, — ответил Иессей, — но он пасет овец.
Самуил сказал:
— Пошли за ним и приведи его. Мы не сядем, пока он не придет сюда.

And Samuel said to Jesse, Are these all the young men? And he said, There is yet the youngest remaining, and behold, he is feeding the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit at table till he come hither.

Он послал за ним, и его привели. Он был румяным,74 с красивыми глазами и приятной внешностью. Господь сказал:
— Встань и помажь его — это он.

And he sent and brought him in. And he was ruddy, and besides of a lovely countenance and beautiful appearance. And Jehovah said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.

13

Самуил взял рог с маслом и помазал Давида в присутствии братьев. Тогда Дух Господень сошел на Давида и с того дня пребывал на нем. Самуил же вернулся в Раму.

And Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren. And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

Дух Господа отошел от Саула, и злой дух от Господа мучил его.

David Serves Saul

And the Spirit of Jehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him.

15

Слуги Саула сказали ему:
— Злой дух от Бога мучит тебя.

15

And Saul's servants said to him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubles thee.

16

Пусть наш господин велит своим слугам найти кого-нибудь, кто умеет играть на арфе. Он будет играть, когда злой дух от Бога будет находить на тебя, и тебе будет лучше.

16

Let our lord now speak; thy servants are before thee: they shall seek out a man, a skilful player on a harp; and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

17

Саул сказал слугам:
— Найдите кого-нибудь, кто хорошо играет на арфе, и приведите его ко мне.

And Saul said to his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

18

Один из его слуг ответил:
— Я видел сына Иессея из Вифлеема. Он умеет играть на арфе. Он храбрый человек и воин, благоразумен в речах, хорошо выглядит, и Господь с ним.

18

And one of the young men answered and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skilled in playing, and he is a valiant man and a man of war, and skilled in speech, and of good presence, and Jehovah is with him.

19

Саул послал вестников к Иессею и сказал:
— Отошли ко мне своего сына Давида, который пасет овец.

Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep.

20

Иессей взял осла, навьючил на него лепешки, взял козленка и бурдюк с вином и послал все это вместе со своим сыном Давидом к Саулу.

20

And Jesse took an ass with bread, and a flask of wine, and a kid, and sent [them] by David his son to Saul.

21

Давид явился к Саулу и поступил к нему на службу. Саул очень полюбил его, и Давид стал одним из его оруженосцев.

And David came to Saul, and stood before him; and he loved him greatly; and he became his armour-bearer.

22

Саул послал сказать Иессею:
— Позволь Давиду остаться у меня на службе, потому что я им доволен.

And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he has found favour in my sight.

23

Всякий раз, когда дух от Бога находил на Саула, Давид брал свою арфу и играл. Саулу становилось легче, и злой дух оставлял его.

23

And it came to pass, when the [evil] spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand; and Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
