The Visit of Jethro
When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt;

Then Jethro, Moses' father in law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,
Он привёл с собой также обоих сыновей Моисея, первенца, которого звали Гирсам, ибо, когда он родился, Моисей сказал: "Я — пришелец в чужой стране",
And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:
и второго сына, которого звали Елиезер, ибо, когда он родился, Моисей сказал: "Бог отца моего помог мне и спас от Египетского царя".
And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:
Иофор пришёл к Моисею, когда тот поставил стан в пустыне у горы Божьей, с женой Моисея и его двумя сыновьями.
And Jethro, Moses' father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:
"Я тесть твой, Иофор, — сказал он, — и веду к тебе твою жену и её двоих сыновей".
And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.
Моисей вышел навстречу своему тестю, поклонился ему и поцеловал его. Мужчины спросили друг друга о здоровье, а потом вошли в шатёр Моисея, чтобы продолжить разговор.
And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.
Моисей рассказал Иофору обо всём, что Господь сделал для израильского народа, рассказал обо всём, что Господь сделал с фараоном и с египетским народом, рассказал также и о трудностях, которые были у них в пути, и ещё рассказал ему о том, как Господь спасал народ Израиля всякий раз, когда они попадали в беду.
And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.
Иофор обрадовался, услышав обо всём хорошем, что Господь сделал для Израиля, и радовался, что Господь освободил израильский народ от египтян.
And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.
Иофор сказал: "Хвала Господу! Он освободил вас из-под власти Египта, спас от фараона.
And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.
И теперь я знаю, что Господь превосходит всех богов. Они считали, что всё подвластно им, но смотрите, что сотворил Бог!"
Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.
Иофор принёс жертвы и приношения в честь Бога, а потом пришёл Аарон со всеми израильскими старейшинами, и они стали вместе с тестем Моисея есть перед Богом.
And Jethro, Moses' father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father in law before God.
На следующий день у Моисея было особое дело — судить народ, и народу пришлось стоять перед Моисеем весь день.
Jethro Advises Moses
And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.

Увидев, что Моисей судит народ, Иофор спросил: "Что это ты делаешь? Почему ты один судишь, и почему к тебе весь день идут люди?"
And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?
Моисей ответил тестю: "Люди приходят ко мне просить, чтобы Бог разрешил их споры.
And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to inquire of God:
Когда между ними случаются споры, они приходят ко мне, и я решаю, кто прав, и так учу людей закону Божьему и уставам Его".
When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.
Но тесть Моисея сказал ему: "Так делать не следует,
And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.
это слишком тяжёлое дело для тебя одного. Ты не можешь делать его один, оно и тебя изнуряет и народ!
Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
Послушай меня, позволь дать тебе совет: я молю Бога, чтобы Он был с тобой, ты же должен продолжать выслушивать людей о том, какие у них трудности, и должен продолжать говорить обо всём этом с Богом,
Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:
но ты должен научить этих людей закону Божьему и уставам Его. Предупреди их, чтобы они не нарушали закон, объясни, как нужно правильно жить, скажи им, что они должны делать.
And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
И выбери некоторых из этих людей судьями и начальниками. Выбери хороших людей, неподкупных и почитающих Бога, и поставь этих людей над народом — пусть они будут главными над тысячей, над сотней, над пятьюдесятью и даже над десятью,
Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
и пусть они судят людей. Если дело очень важное, то пусть придут к тебе, и ты рассудишь, как поступить, остальные же дела они могут решать сами. Тогда эти люди разделят с тобой труд, и тебе будет легче вести за собой народ.
And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
Если сделаешь это и если Господу будет угодно, ты сможешь делать своё дело, люди же будут уходить домой с миром".
If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
Моисей последовал совету Иофора:
So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.
выбрав хороших людей из числа израильского народа, он поставил их главными над тысячей человек, над сотней, над пятьюдесятью и над десятью.
And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
Эти люди были судьями народа, и народ мог всегда придти к ним со своими разногласиями, Моисей же решал только самые важные дела.
And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.
