The Futility of Pleasures

I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.

Смеяться всё время глупо, от развлечения нет никакого толка.

I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?

И в то время как мой разум руководствовался мудростью, решил я подбодрить тело своё вином. Я решил испытать эту глупость, желая увидеть, что хорошего должны делать люди за недолгие дни своей жизни.

I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.

И тогда начал я делать великие вещи: я построил дома, посадил виноградники.

I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:

Я сажал сады и разбивал парки, и посадил в них все виды фруктовых деревьев.

I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:

Я сделал водоёмы, чтобы поливать мои растущие деревья.

I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:

Я купил рабов, мужчин и женщин, и были рабы, рождённые в доме моём, у меня были стада коров и отары овец, и было у меня всего больше, чем у кого-либо в Иерусалиме до меня.

I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:

Я собрал серебро и золото, я забрал богатства у царей и областей, у меня были певцы и певицы, и всё, что пожелаешь, включая многочисленных жён.

I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.

Я стал очень знаменитым, стал более великим, чем все, кто жил в Иерусалиме до меня. И мудрость моя была рядом со мной, чтобы помочь мне.

So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.

Всё, что видели и желали глаза мои, я получал, мой разум был доволен тем, что я делал, и счастье это было наградой за весь мой тяжкий труд.

And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.

Но потом я взглянул на всё, что я сделал, подумал обо всей тяжёлой работе, проделанной мной, и решил я, что это всё было потерей времени, попыткой поймать ветер. Никакой нет пользы от всего того, что мы делаем в жизни.

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

Что сделает тот, кто придёт после царя? То, что уже сделано царём. И увидел я: даже то, что делает царь, тоже потеря времени. И я снова стал думать о мудрости, глупости и безумстве.

The Wise and the Foolish

And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.

Я видел: мудрость лучше глупости, как и свет лучше темноты,

Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.

14

и мудрый пользуется разумом, как глазами, чтобы видеть, куда он идёт. А глупый — как идущий в темноте. Но и у глупого, и у мудрого конец одинаков — оба они умирают.

The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.

15

И я про себя подумал: что случается с глупым, случится и со мной, зачем же я так стремился к мудрости? И я сказал сам себе: "Быть таким мудрым тоже бесполезно".

Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.

16

Оба умрут — и мудрый, и глупый, и люди не будут помнить вечно ни мудрого, ни глупого. Люди забудут всё, что те сделали.

For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.

И всё это меня заставило возненавидеть жизнь и опечалиться при мысли, что в жизни всё так же бесполезно, как пытаться поймать ветер.

Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

И свой тяжёлый труд я начал ненавидеть, потому что я не смогу ничего с собою забрать, и всё достанется тем, кто будет после меня.

The Futility of Work

Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.

19

Кто-то другой будет владеть всем, что я создал трудом и умением своим, и мне не известно — мудрым будет он или глупым. И это всё бессмысленно.

And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

20

И опечалился я из-за всего, что сделал.

Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.

Человек может много трудиться, прилагая всю мудрость, знания и мастерство, но он умрёт и другие получат то, над чем он трудился. Они не трудились, но получат всё. Это тоже бессмысленно и очень несправедливо.

For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.

Что же имеет человек после труда своего и борьбы здесь на земле?

For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?

Вся жизнь его состояла из боли, весь труд его был потерянностью, даже ночью не знает отдыха разум. Но и это бессмысленно.

For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.

Есть ли человек, который ест и радуется жизни без Бога? Нет такого. И вот что я понял: лучшее, что может человек, это есть, пить и наслаждаться работой, которую он должен делать. Я понял так же, что приходит всё это от Бога.

There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

25

Никто не может есть или наслаждаться жизнью без Бога."

For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?

Если человек делает добро и угождает Богу, то Бог даёт ему мудрость, знания и радость. Но кто грешит, того Бог заставляет собирать и копить, чтобы отдать тому, кто угождает Богу. Но и это всё так же бессмысленно, как пытаться поймать ветер.

For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
