По тому пустився Яків у дальшу путь і прибув у землю синів сходу.
Jacob Meets Rachel
And Jacob continued his journey, and went into the land of the children of the east.
And Jacob continued his journey, and went into the land of the children of the east.
Дивиться він — аж ось криниця в полі й овець три отари лежать коло неї, бо з тієї криниці напували отари. На ній великий камінь.
And he looked, and behold, there was a well in the fields, and behold there, three flocks of sheep were lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks, and a great stone was at the mouth of the well.
Коли ж зібралися туди отари, пастухи відкочували камінь від отвору й напували овець та й клали його назад на місце.
And when all the flocks were gathered there, they rolled the stone from the mouth of the well, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again on the mouth of the well in its place.
І сказав Яків до них: "Браття, звідкіля ви?" Вони ж відрекли: "Ми з Харану."
And Jacob said to them, My brethren, whence are ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.
Тоді він каже до них: "Чи знаєте Лавана, сина Нахора?" Вони кажуть: "Знаємо."
And he said to them, Do ye know Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We do know [him].
Тож питає їх: "Чи він жив-здоров?" відповіли: "Здоров, ось і Рахиль його дочка йде з вівцями."
And he said to them, Is he well? And they said, [He is] well; and behold, there comes Rachel his daughter with the sheep.
"Ще дня багато", сказав Яків, "ще не пора зганяти докупи худібку. Понапувайте вівці й ідіть пасти."
And he said, Behold, it is yet high day; it is not time that the cattle should be gathered together; water the sheep, and go, feed [them].
Та вони мовили: "Не можемо, доки не зберуться всі отари докупи й не відкотять каменя з-над криниці, тоді й понапуваєм овець."
And they said, We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together, and they roll the stone from the mouth of the well, and we water the sheep.
Поки він говорив ще з ними, Рахиль надійшла з вівцями свого батька, бо вона пастушкою була.
While he was still speaking to them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess.
От як тільки Яків побачив Рахиль, дочку Лавана, брата своєї матері, з вівцями того ж Лавана, приступив Яків і відкотив камінь від криниці й напоїв овець Лавана, брата своєї матері.
And it came to pass when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well, and watered the sheep of Laban his mother's brother.
Опісля поцілував Яків Рахиль та й заплакав уголос.
And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept.
Він розповів Рахилі, що він родич її батька, бож він син Ревеки, а вона побігла й розповіла те своєму батькові.
And Jacob told Rachel that he was a brother of her father, and that he was Rebecca's son; and she ran and told her father.
Як же ж Лаван почув вістку про Якова, сина своєї сестри, то вибіг йому назустріч, обійняв його, поцілував його й увів до себе в господу, а він оповів Лаванові про всі речі.
And it came to pass when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house; and he told Laban all these things.
Тоді Лаван мовив до нього: "Направду, ти кість моя і тіло моє!" І пробув Яків у нього місяць часу.
Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel
And Laban said to him, Thou art indeed my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him a month's time.
And Laban said to him, Thou art indeed my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him a month's time.
Тоді Лаван сказав до Якова: "Хіба тому, що ти мій родич, маєш дармо на мене працювати? Скажи мені, скільки тобі платити?"
And Laban said to Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou serve me for nothing? tell me, what shall be thy wages?
Було ж у Лавана дві дочки: старша, на ім'я Лія, та менша, на ім'я Рахиль.
And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger, Rachel.
Очі ж у Лії були тьмяні, а Рахиль була поставна й гарна з виду.
And the eyes of Leah were tender; but Rachel was of beautiful form and beautiful countenance.
Тому сподобав собі Яків Рахиль і каже: "Служитиму тобі сім років за Рахиль, твою молодшу дочку."
And Jacob loved Rachel, and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.
На це Лаван відповів: "Ліпше мені дати її тобі, ніж комусь іншому. Живи зо мною."
And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.
І вислужив Яків за Рахиль сім років, а здавалось йому, наче кілька днів, тому що він любив її.
And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they were in his eyes as single days, because he loved her.
Тоді Яків і каже до Лавана: "Приведи мою жінку, бо дні мої сповнилися: нехай я ввійду до неї."
And Jacob said to Laban, Give [me] my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.
Тож Лаван зібрав усіх місцевих людей і зробив учту;
And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
а ввечері взяв він Лію, свою дочку, та й привів її до Якова, й той увійшов до неї.
And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in to her.
Лаван же дав їй, дочці своїй Лії, за слугиню Зілпу, свою служку.
And Laban gave to her Zilpah, his maidservant, to be maidservant to Leah his daughter.
Коли ж настав ранок, то й виявилося, що то Лія, тим то й каже Яків до Лавана: "Що це ти мені заподіяв? Хіба не за Рахиль служив я в тебе? Чому ж ти мене обманув?"
And it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done to me? Have I not served thee for Rachel? Why then hast thou deceived me?
А Лаван і каже: "Немає в нашому краї звичаю видавати молодшу перед старшою.
And Laban said, It is not so done in our place, to give the younger before the firstborn.
Та вже кінчи цей тиждень, а я дам тобі і другу за службу, що її робитимеш мені ще других сім років."
Fulfil the week [with] this one: then we will give thee the other one also, for the service that thou shalt serve me yet seven other years.
Яків так і зробив. Закінчив цей тиждень з нею, і Лаван дав йому Рахиль, свою дочку, за жінку.
And Jacob did so, and fulfilled the week [with] this one, and he gave him Rachel his daughter to be his wife.
Рахилі ж, дочці своїй, дав він за слугиню Білгу, свою служку.
And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, Bilhah, his maidservant, to be her maidservant.
Увійшов Яків також до Рахилі й полюбив її більше, ніж Лію, і служив у Лавана других сім років.
And he went in also to Rachel; and he loved also Rachel more than Leah. And he served with him yet seven other years.
Та Господь побачив, що Лія менше люблена, тож обдарував її плодовитістю, а Рахиль була неплідна.
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah
And when Jehovah saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.

Отож зачала Лія і породила сина та й назвала його ім'ям Рувим: "бо Господь", сказала, "зглянувсь на моє горе. Тепер мій чоловік буде любити мене."
And Leah conceived, and bore a son, and called his name Reuben; for she said, Because Jehovah has looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.
І знову зачала й породила сина та й сказала: "Господь почув, що я ненавидна, то дав мені ще й цього; і назвала його Симеон."
And she again conceived, and bore a son, and said, Because Jehovah has heard that I am hated, he has therefore given me this one also; and she called his name Simeon.
І знову зачала і породила сина та й сказала: "Тепер, цим разом, мій чоловік пристане до мене, бо я породила йому трьох синів." Тому й назвала його ім'ям Леві.
And she again conceived, and bore a son, and said, Now this time will my husband be united to me, for I have borne him three sons; therefore was his name called Levi.
