Аж ось отворив Йов уста свої й проклинав день уродин своїх.
Job Laments his Birth
After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.

Нехай би (був) щез день, коли я на сьвіт родився, й ніч, коли проречено: Зачався чоловік!
Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.
Нехай би той день був темрявою; і нехай би Бог на висотї не згадав (був) про його, й нехай би ясність не засияла (була) над ним!
Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.
Нехай би затьмила (була) його темрява й густа тїнь смертна; нехай би обняла його густа мрака, нехай би (були) лякались його, неначе палючого жару!
Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.
А ніч тая — нехай би (була) в мороцї потонула, нехай би не лїчилась між днями в року, й не входила в рахубу в місяцях!
As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.
О, ніч тая — нехай би була вона безлюдна, й не озивались в нїй веселощі!
Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.
Нехай би її (були) прокляли ті, що проклинають день*, та готові й дракона розбудити!
Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.
Нехай би (були) зорі її розсьвіту померкли; нехай би ждала (була) сьвітла, а воно не приходило й щоб не побачила (була) поранньої зарі,
Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:
За те, що не зачинила дверей матерньої утроби, й не закрила горя перед очима моїми!
Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.
Чом я не вмер, виходячи з утроби, і не сконав, як вийшов із живота?
Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?
Про що мене взято на колїна? про що було менї ссати груди?
Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?
Тепер би лежав я й спочивав; спав би й був би спокоєн
For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,
З царями та з владиками земними, що забудовували собі пустинї,
With kings and counsellers of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves;
Або з князями, що золотом блищали, сріблом свої палати збогачали;
Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:
Або як збігленя невидиме, як дїти, що не побачили сьвіта.
Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.
Там проступники перестають наводити страх, там спочивають ті, що вичерпали сили.
There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.
Там вязнї, сковані до купи, відпочивають, і не чують крику наставника.
There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.
Малий і великий там собі рівні, а невольник вільний від пана свого.
The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.
Про що дане нуждареві сьвітло, про що життє тим, що їм на душі гірко,
Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;
Що ждуть смертї, а її нема, що копали б за нею раднїйше, нїж за скарбом;
Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;
Вони зрадїли б без міри, одушевились би, коли б знайшли свою там домовину.
Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?
На що тому на сьвітї жити, кого Господь обняв ночною тьмою й загородив дорогу?
Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?
Зітхання мої випереджують їжу мою, а стогнання мої ллються, як вода;
For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.
Бо страшне, чого я боявся, те й постигло мене, й перед чим тремтїв я, те склалось надо мною.
For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
