Побачивши ж народ, зійшов на гору, і, як сїв, приступили до Него ученики Його;

The Sermon on the Mount

But seeing the crowds, he went up into the mountain, and having sat down, his disciples came to him;

і відкрив Він уста свої, і навчав їх, глаголючи:

and, having opened his mouth, he taught them, saying,

Блаженні вбогі духом, бо їх царство небесне.

The Beatitudes

Blessed [are] the poor in spirit, for *theirs* is the kingdom of the heavens.

4

Блаженні сумні, бо такі втїшять ся.

4

Blessed they that mourn, for *they* shall be comforted.

5

Блаженні тихі, бо такі осягнуть землю.

5

Blessed the meek, for *they* shall inherit the earth.

6

Блаженні голодні й жадні правди, бо такі наситять ся.

6

Blessed they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for *they* shall be filled.

7

Блаженні милостиві, бо такі будуть помилувані.

7

Blessed the merciful, for *they* shall find mercy.

8

Блаженні чисті серцем, бо такі побачять Бога.

8

Blessed the pure in heart, for *they* shall see God.

9

Блаженні миротворцї, бо такі синами Божими звати муть ся.

Blessed the peace-makers, for *they* shall be called sons of God.

10

Блаженні, кого гонять за правду, бо їх царство небесне.

10

Blessed they who are persecuted on account of righteousness, for *theirs* is the kingdom of the heavens.

11

Блаженні ви, коли вас безчестити муть, та гонити муть, та казати муть на вас усяке лихе слово не по правдї, ради мене.

Blessed are ye when they may reproach and persecute you, and say every wicked thing against you, lying, for my sake.

12

Радуйтесь і веселїтесь: бо велика нагорода ваша на небі; так бо гонили й пророків, що бували перше вас.

Rejoice and exult, for your reward is great in the heavens; for thus have they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

13

Ви сіль землї; коли ж сіль звітріє, то чим солити? Нї-на-що не годить ся тодї вона, тільки щоб викинути геть і щоб топтали її люде.

13

Salt and Light

*Ye* are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have become insipid, wherewith shall it be salted? It is no longer fit for anything but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot by men.

14

Ви сьвітло сьвіту. Не може город сховати ся, стоячи на горі;

14

*Ye* are the light of the world: a city situated on the top of a mountain cannot be hid.

15

і, засьвітивши сьвічку, не ставлять під посудину, а на сьвічнику; то й сьвітить вона всїм, хто в хатї,

15

Nor do [men] light a lamp and put it under the bushel, but upon the lamp-stand, and it shines for all who are in the house.

16

так нехай сяє сьвітло ваше перед людьми, щоб вони бачили ваші добрі дїла, й прославляли Отця вашого, що на небі.

16

Let your light thus shine before men, so that they may see your upright works, and glorify your Father who is in the heavens.

17

Не думайте, що я прийшов знївечити закон або пророків; не прийшов я знївечити, а сповнити.

Jesus Fulfills the Law

Think not that I am come to make void the law or the prophets; I am not come to make void, but to fulfil.

18

Істино бо глаголю вам: Доки перейде небо й земля, одна йота, або одна титла не перейде з закону, аж поки все станеть ся.

18

For verily I say unto you, Until the heaven and the earth pass away, one iota or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all come to pass.

19

Тим, хто поламле одну найменшу з сих заповідей і навчить так людей, той звати меть ся найменшим у царстві небесному; а хто сповнить і навчить, той звати меть ся великим у царстві небесному.

Whosoever then shall do away with one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whosoever shall practise and teach [them], *he* shall be called great in the kingdom of the heavens.

20

Глаголю бо вам: Що коли ваша правда не переважить письменників та Фарисеїв, то не ввійдете в царство небесне.

20

For I say unto you, that unless your righteousness surpass [that] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of the heavens.

21

Чували ви, що сказано старосьвіцьким: Не вбий, а хто вбє, на того буде суд.

21

Anger and Reconciliation

Ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill; but whosoever shall kill shall be subject to the judgment.

22

Я ж вам глаголю: Хто сердить ся на брата свого без причини, на того буде суд; а хто скаже на брата свого: Рака, на того буде громадський суд; хто ж скаже: дурню, на того буде огонь пекольний.

22

But *I* say unto you, that every one that is lightly angry with his brother shall be subject to the judgment; but whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be subject to [be called before] the sanhedrim; but whosoever shall say, Fool, shall be subject to the penalty of the hell of fire.

23

Тим, коли принесеш дар свій до жертівнї, й згадаєш там, що твій брат має що проти тебе;

23

If therefore thou shouldest offer thy gift at the altar, and there shouldest remember that thy brother has something against thee,

24

зостав свій дар перед жертівнею, і йди геть, помирись перш із братом твоїм, а тодї прийди й подай дар твій.

24

leave there thy gift before the altar, and first go, be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

25

Мирись із твоїм противником хутко, доки ти ще в дорозї з ним, щоб не віддав тебе противник суддї, а суддя не віддав тебе осавулї (слузї), і не вкинуто тебе в темницю.

Make friends with thine adverse party quickly, whilst thou art in the way with him; lest some time the adverse party deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

26

Істино глаголю тобі: Не вийдеш звідтіля, доки не віддаси й останнього шеляга.

26

Verily I say to thee, Thou shalt in no wise come out thence till thou hast paid the last farthing.

27

Чували ви, що сказано старосьвіцьким: Не чини перелюбу.

27

Adultery

Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery.

28

Я ж вам глаголю: Хто спогляне на жінку жадібним оком, той уже вчинив перелюб із нею в серцї своїм.

28

But *I* say unto you, that every one who looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29

Коли ж око твоє праве блазнить тебе, вирви його, й кинь од себе; бо більша користь тобі, щоб один із членів твоїх згинув, а не все тїло вкинуто в пекло.

29

But if thy right eye be a snare to thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.

30

І коли права рука твоя блазнить тебе, відотни її, й кинь од себе; більша бо користь тобі, щоб один із членів твоїх згинув, а не все тїло твоє вкинуто в пекло.

30

And if thy right hand be a snare to thee, cut it off and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.

31

Сказано ж: Що хто розводить ся з жінкою своєю, нехай дасть їй розвідний лист.

31

Divorce

It has been said too, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a letter of divorce.

32

Я ж вам глаголю: Що хто розведеть ся з жінкою своєю, хиба що за перелюб, доводить її до перелюбу; й хто оженить ся з розвідкою, чинить перелюб.

32

But *I* say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except for cause of fornication, makes her commit adultery, and whosoever marries one that is put away commits adultery.

33

Знов чували, що сказано старосьвіцьким: Не кленись криво, а сповняй перед Господом обітницї твої.

33

Vows

Again, ye have heard that it has been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt render to the Lord what thou hast sworn.

34

Я ж вам глаголю: Не клянїть ся зовсїм: нї небом, бо воно престол Божий;

34

But *I* say unto you, Do not swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is [the] throne of God;

35

нї землею, бо вона підніжок ніг Його; нї Єрусалимом, бо се город великого царя;

35

nor by the earth, because it is [the] footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is [the] city of the great King.

36

нї головою твоєю не клянись, бо не зможеш зробити нї одного волоса білим або чорним.

36

Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37

Слово ж ваше нехай буде: так, так; нї, нї; бо що більш над се, те від лихого.

37

But let your word be Yea, yea; Nay, nay; but what is more than these is from evil.

38

Чували ви, що сказано: Око за око, й зуб за зуб.

Love Your Enemies

Ye have heard that it has been said, Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.

39

Я ж вам глаголю: Не противтесь лихому, а хто вдарить тебе у праву щоку твою, повернись до него й другою.

39

But *I* say unto you, not to resist evil; but whoever shall strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other;

40

І хто схоче судитись із тобою і зняти з тебе свиту, віддай йому й жупанок.

40

and to him that would go to law with thee and take thy body coat, leave him thy cloak also.

41

І хто силувати ме тебе йти милю, йди з ним дві.

41

And whoever will compel thee to go one mile, go with him two.

42

Дай, хто в тебе просить, і хто хоче в тебе позичити, не одвертайсь од него.

42

To him that asks of thee give, and from him that desires to borrow of thee turn not away.

43

Чували ви, що сказано: Люби ближнього твого, й ненавидь ворога твого.

43

Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy.

44

Я ж вам глаголю: Любіть ворогів ваших, благословляйте, хто клене вас, робіть добро, хто ненавидить вас, і молїть ся за тих, що обижають вас і гонять вас;

44

But *I* say unto you, Love your enemies, [bless those who curse you,] do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who [insult you and] persecute you,

45

щоб вам бути синами Отця вашого, що на небі; Він бо велить сонцю своєму сходити над лихими й над добрими, й посилає дощ на праведних і неправедних.

45

that ye may be [the] sons of your Father who is in [the] heavens; for he makes his sun rise on evil and good, and sends rain on just and unjust.

46

Бо коли ви любите тих, що люблять вас, то за що вам нагорода? хиба й митники не те саме роблять?

46

For if ye should love those who love you, what reward have ye? Do not also the tax-gatherers the same?

47

І коли витаєте тільки братів ваших, то що надто робите? хиба й митники не так роблять?

47

And if ye should salute your brethren only, what do ye extraordinary? Do not also the Gentiles the same?

48

Оце ж бувайте звершені, як Отець ваш, що на небі, звершений.

48

Be *ye* therefore perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.
