Greeting to the Twelve Tribes

James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad:
Greetings.

Усяку радість майте, браттє моє, коли впадаєте в різні спокуси,

Profiting from Trials

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,

знаючи, що доказ вашої віри робить терпіннє;

knowing that the testing of your faith produces [a]patience.

4

терпіннє ж нехай має звершене дїло, щоб ви були звершені і повні, нї в чому не маючи недостатку.

But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be [b]perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

Коли ж у кого з вас недостає премудрости, нехай просить у Бога, котрий дає всїм щедро та й не осоромлює, то й дасть ся йому.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

6

Нехай же просить вірою, нїчого не сумнячись; хто бо сумнить ся, той подобен филї морській, котру вітер жене та й розбиває.

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.

7

Нехай бо не думає такий чоловік, що прийме що від Бога.

7

For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;

8

Чоловік двоєдушний не статечний у всїх дорогах своїх.

he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

9

Нехай же хвалить ся брат смиренний висотою своєю,

The Perspective of Rich and Poor

Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation,

10

а багатий смиреннєм своїм; бо він, як травяний цьвіт, перейде.

10

but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away.

11

Зійшло бо сонце із спекою, і висушило траву, і цьвіт її опав, і краса лиця її зникла; так і багатий в дорогах своїх зівяне.

For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.

12

Блажен чоловік, що витерпить спокусу; тим що, будучи вірний, прийме вінець життя, що обіцяв Бог тим, що люблять Його.

Loving God Under Trials

Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

13

Нїхто ж у спокусї нехай не каже: Що Бог мене спокушує; Бог бо не спокушуєть ся лихим, і не спокушує сам нїкого.

13

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.

14

Кожен же спокушуєть ся, надившись і лестившись похоттю своєю.

14

But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.

15

Потім похоть, зачавши, роджає гріх, гріх же зроблений роджає смерть.

15

Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

16

Не заблуджуйтесь, браттє моє любе.

16

Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

17

Усяке добре даяннє і всякий звершений дар з висоти сходить, од Отця сьвітла, в котрого нема переміни анї тїни зміни.

17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

18

Схотїв бо, то й породив нас словом правди, щоб бути нам якимсь почином творива Його.

18

Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

19

Тим же, браттє моє любе, нехай буде всякий чоловік скорий на слуханнє, і нескорий на слова, нескорий на гнїв.

Qualities Needed in Trials

[c]So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

20

Гнїв бо чоловіка правди Божої не чинить.

20

for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

21

Задля того відкинувши всяку погань і останок зла, прийміть у лагідности посаджене слово, що може спасти душі ваші.

Doers — Not Hearers Only

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and [d]overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

22

Будьте ж чинителями слова, а не тілько слухателями, обманюючи себе самих.

22

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

23

Бо, коли хто слухатель слова, а не чинитель, той подобен чоловікові, що дивить ся на природне лице своє в зеркалї.

23

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;

24

Подививсь бо на себе, та й одійшов, та зараз і забув, який він був.

24

for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

25

Хто ж дивить ся в звершений закон свободи, та й пробуває в ньому, той не слухатель забуваючий, а чинитель дїла; такий буде щасливий у дїланню своїм.

25

But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

26

Коли хто думає, що він вірен між вами, не уздаючи язика свого, а обманюючи серце своє, у того марна віра.

26

If anyone [e]among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.

27

Ото бо віра чиста і неопоганена перед Богом і Отцем, щоб одвідувати сиріт і вдовиць у горю їх, і держати себе неопоганеним од сьвіта.

27

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
