David in Old Age
Now King David was old, advanced in age; and they covered him with clothes, but he could not keep warm.

І сказали йому його раби: „Нехай пошукають для пана царя молоду ді́вчину, — і стане вона перед царем, і буде йому за догля́дачку. І буде вона лежати при лоні твоїм, — і буде те́пло панові цареві!“
So his servants said to him, “Let them seek a young virgin for my lord the king, and let her attend the king and become his nurse; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may keep warm.”
І шукали ді́вчину вродли́ву по всій Ізраїлевій границі, та й знайшли шунаммі́тку Авіша́ґ, і привели́ її до царя.
So they searched for a beautiful girl throughout all the territory of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
А та ді́вчина була дуже вродли́ва. І була́ вона цареві догля́дачкою, і прислуго́вувала йому, та цар не пізнав її.
The girl was very beautiful; and she became the king’s nurse and served him, but the king did not cohabit with her.
А Адо́нія, син Хаґґітин, бундю́чився та говорив: „Я буду царювати!“ І справив він собі по́воза та верхівців, та п'ятдесят чоловіка бігунів перед собою.
Now Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” So he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen with fifty men to run before him.
А батько його ніко́ли його не засмучував, щоб сказати: „Чому́ ти так робиш?“ А він також був дуже вродли́вий, і мати народила його по Авесаломі.
His father had never crossed him at any time by asking, “Why have you done so?” And he was also a very handsome man, and he was born after Absalom.
І мав він змову з Йоавом, сином Церуї, та зо священиком Евіятаром, — і вони помагали Адонії.
He had conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest; and following Adonijah they helped him.
А священик Садок, і Беная, син Єгоядин, і пророк Ната́н, і Шім'ї, і Реї та Давидові лицарі не були з Адонією.
But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
І приніс Адо́нія в жертву худоби дрібно́ї та худоби великої, та худоби ситої при Евен-Газзохелеті, що при Ен-Роґелі, і закли́кав усіх братів своїх, царськи́х синів, та всіх Юдиних мужів, царськи́х слуг.
Adonijah sacrificed sheep and oxen and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En-rogel; and he invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants.
А пророка Натана, і Бенаю, і лицарів та брата свого Соломона він не покли́кав.
But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, and Solomon his brother.
І сказав Ната́н до Вірсаві́ї, Соломонової матері, говорячи: „Чи ти не чула, що зацарюва́в Адо́нія, син Хаґґітин, а пан наш Давид не знає про те?
Nathan and Bathsheba
Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king, and David our lord does not know it?
А тепер іди, я тобі пора́джу, — і рятуй життя своє та життя сина свого Соломо́на!
“So now come, please let me give you counsel and save your life and the life of your son Solomon.
Іди, і вві́йдеш до царя Давида та й скажеш до нього: Чи ж не ти, пане мій ца́рю, присягнув був своїй невільниці, говорячи: Син твій Соломо́н буде царюва́ти по мені, і він буде сидіти на троні моїм. Чому́ ж зацарюва́в Адо́нія?
“Go at once to King David and say to him, ‘Have you not, my lord, O king, sworn to your maidservant, saying, “Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’
Ото, ти ще будеш говорити там із царем, а я ввійду́ за тобою, і потверджу́ слова твої“.
“Behold, while you are still there speaking with the king, I will come in after you and confirm your words.”
І ввійшла Вірсаві́я до царя в кімна́ту, — а цар був дуже стари́й, і шунаммітка Авішаґ послуго́вувала цареві.
So Bathsheba went in to the king in the bedroom. Now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was ministering to the king.
І похилилася Вірсавія, і вклонилася цареві до землі. А цар сказав: „Що́ тобі?“
Then Bathsheba bowed and prostrated herself before the king. And the king said, “What do you wish?”
І вона сказала йому: „Пане мій, ти присягнув був своїй невільниці Господом, Богом своїм: Соломо́н, син твій, буде царювати по мені, і він сидітиме на троні моїм.
She said to him, “My lord, you swore to your maidservant by the LORD your God, saying, ‘Surely your son Solomon shall be king after me and he shall sit on my throne.’
А тепер ось зацарюва́в Адо́нія, а ти, пане мій ца́рю, не знаєш про те.
“Now, behold, Adonijah is king; and now, my lord the king, you do not know it.
І приніс він у жертву багато волів і худоби ситої та худоби дрібно́ї, і покликав усіх царськи́х синів, і священика Евіятара та Йоава, вождя́ війська, а раба твого Соломо́на не покликав.
“He has sacrificed oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the sons of the king and Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant.
А ти, пане мій ца́рю, — очі всього Ізраїля на тобі, щоб ти сказав їм, хто́ буде сидіти на троні пана мого царя по ньому.
“As for you now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
Іна́кше станеться, як спочи́не пан мій цар з батьками своїми, то буду я та син мій Соломо́н винними“.
“Otherwise it will come about, as soon as my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered offenders.”
І ось, ще вона говорила з царем, а прийшов пророк Ната́н.
Behold, while she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.
І доне́сли цареві, говорячи: „Ось пророк Ната́н!“ І ввійшов він перед цареве обличчя, і впав перед царем обличчям своїм до землі.
They told the king, saying, “Here is Nathan the prophet.” And when he came in before the king, he prostrated himself before the king with his face to the ground.
І сказав Ната́н: „Пане мій ца́рю! Чи ти сказав: Адонія буде царювати по мені, і він буде сидіти на троні моїм?
Then Nathan said, “My lord the king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne’?
Бо зійшов він сьогодні, і приніс у жертву багато волів і худоби ситої та худоби дрібно́ї. І він покли́кав усіх царськи́х синів, і провідників ві́йська, і священика Евіятара, і ось вони їдять та п'ють перед ним, і говорять: Нехай живе цар Адо́нія!
“For he has gone down today and has sacrificed oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king’s sons and the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest, and behold, they are eating and drinking before him; and they say, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’
А мене — я раб твій! — і священика Садо́ка, і Бена́ю, сина Єгоядиного, та раба твого Соломона не покли́кав.
“But me, even me your servant, and Zadok the priest and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and your servant Solomon, he has not invited.
Чи ця річ була від пана мого царя, а ти не повідо́мив раба свого, хто́ буде сидіти на троні мого пана царя по ньому?“
“Has this thing been done by my lord the king, and you have not shown to your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”
А цар Давид відповів та й сказав: „Покличте мені Вірсаві́ю!“ І прийшла́ вона перед царське́ обличчя, і стала перед царем.
Then King David said, “Call Bathsheba to me.” And she came into the king’s presence and stood before the king.
І присягну́в цар та й сказав: „Як живий Господь, що визволив душу мою від усякого лиха, —
The king vowed and said, “As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress,
як присягнув я тобі Господом, Богом Ізраїля, говорячи: Син твій Соломо́н буде царюва́ти по мені, і він буде сидіти на моєму троні замість мене, — так я й зроблю́ цього дня!“
surely as I vowed to you by the LORD the God of Israel, saying, ‘Your son Solomon shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place’; I will indeed do so this day.”
І вклонилася Вірсаві́я обличчям своїм до землі, і впала перед царем та й сказала: „Нехай живе пан мій, цар Давид, навіки!“
Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground, and prostrated herself before the king and said, “May my lord King David live forever.”
І сказав цар Давид: „Покличте мені священика Садо́ка, і пророка Ната́на та Бена́ю, сина Єгоя́диного“. І поприхо́дили вони перед царе́ве обличчя.
Then King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” And they came into the king’s presence.
І сказав цар до них: Візьміть із собою слуг вашого пана, і посадіть мого сина Соломона на мою му́лицю, і зведіть його до Ґіхону.
The king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord, and have my son Solomon ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.
А там помаже його священик Садок та пророк Натан на царя над Ізраїлем. І засурмі́ть у сурму́ та й скрикнете: Нехай живе цар Соломон!
“Let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there as king over Israel, and blow the trumpet and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’
Потім пі́дете за ним, а він уві́йде та й сяде на моєму троні, і він буде царюва́ти замість мене, і йому наказав я бути володарем над Ізраїлем та над Юдою“.
“Then you shall come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne and be king in my place; for I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah.”
І відповів Беная, син Єгоядин, та й сказав: „Амінь. Так нехай скаже Господь, Бог пана мого царя!
Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king and said, “Amen! Thus may the LORD, the God of my lord the king, say.
Як був Госпо́дь із паном моїм царем, так нехай буде з Соломоном, і нехай Він звели́чить трон його над трона пана мого царя Давида!“
“As the LORD has been with my lord the king, so may He be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David!”
І пішов священик Садок та пророк Натан, і Беная, син Єгоядин, і керетянин, і пелетянин, і посадили Соломона на мулицю царя Давида, та й повели́ його до Ґіхону.
Solomon Anointed King
So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.
І взяв священик Садок рога оливи із скинії, та й помазав Соломона. І засурми́ли в сурму́, та й кричав увесь народ: „Нехай живе цар Соломон!“
Zadok the priest then took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!”
І піднявся за ним ввесь народ. А народ грав на сопі́лках та радів великою радістю, аж земля розпада́лася від їхнього голосу!
All the people went up after him, and the people were playing on flutes and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth shook at their noise.
І почув це Адонія та всі покли́кані, що були з ним, а вони тількищо скінчи́ли їсти. І почув Йоав голос сурми́ та й сказав: „Що це за крик та гамір у місті?“
Now Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating. When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “Why is the city making such an uproar?”
Ще він говорив, аж ось прихо́дить Йоанатан, син священика Евіятара. А Адонія сказав: „Увійди, бо ти муж гідний, і звісти нам щось добре!“
While he was still speaking, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came. Then Adonijah said, “Come in, for you are a valiant man and bring good news.”
І відповів Йонатан та й сказав до Адонії: „Таж пан наш цар Давид настанови́в на царя Соломона!
But Jonathan replied to Adonijah, “No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king.
І послав із ним цар священика Садока та пророка Натана, і Бенаю, Єгоядиного сина, і керетянина, і пелетянина, і вони посадили його на царську́ му́лицю.
“The king has also sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites; and they have made him ride on the king’s mule.
І пома́зали його в Ґіхоні священик Садок та пророк Натан на царя. І повихо́дили вони звідти веселі, і зашуміло місто. Це той голос, що ви чули.
“Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon, and they have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise which you have heard.
І Соломон уже засів на троні царства.
“Besides, Solomon has even taken his seat on the throne of the kingdom.
І також посхо́дилися царські́ слу́ги, щоб поблагословити нашого пана царя Давида, говорячи: Нехай Бог твій учинить Соломонове ім'я́ славнішим від твого імени, і нехай звеличить його трон над трона твого́! І вклонився цар на ло́жі своїм.
“Moreover, the king’s servants came to bless our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name and his throne greater than your throne!’ And the king bowed himself on the bed.
І сказав цар так: Благословенний Господь, Бог Ізраїлів, що сьогодні дав сидя́чого на моїм троні, а мої очі те бачать!“
“The king has also said thus, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has granted one to sit on my throne today while my own eyes see it.’”
І затремтіли, і повставали всі покли́кані, що були з Адонією, і пішли кожен на доро́гу свою...
Then all the guests of Adonijah were terrified; and they arose and each went on his way.
А Адонія боявся Соломона. І встав він, і пішов, і схопи́вся за роги же́ртівника.
And Adonijah was afraid of Solomon, and he arose, went and took hold of the horns of the altar.
І донесено Соломонові, кажучи: „Ось Адо́нія злякався царя Соломона, й ось він схопи́вся за роги же́ртівника, кажучи: Нехай цар Соломон зараз присягне́ мені, що не вб'є свого раба мече́м!“
Now it was told Solomon, saying, “Behold, Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon, for behold, he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’”
І сказав Соломон: „Якщо він буде му́жем че́сним, ані волоси́на його не впаде на землю! А якщо зна́йдеться в ньому зло, то помре“.
Solomon said, “If he is a worthy man, not one of his hairs will fall to the ground; but if wickedness is found in him, he will die.”
І послав цар Соломон, і відвели́ його від же́ртівника. І прийшов він, і впав перед царем Соломоном, а Соломон йому сказав: „Іди до свого дому!“
So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and prostrated himself before King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”
