And he sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel and said to him, “Thus says Ben-hadad:
та й сказав йому: „Так сказав Бен-Гада́д: Срібло твоє та золото твоє — моє воно, а жінки́ твої та сини́ твої, ці найліпші, — мої вони“!
‘Your silver and your gold are mine; your best wives and children also are mine.’”
І відповів Ізраїлів цар та й сказав: „Буде за словом твоїм, пане мій ца́рю! Твій я та все, що моє!“
And the king of Israel answered, “As you say, my lord, O king, I am yours, and all that I have.”
І знову верну́лися ті посли та й сказали: „Так сказав Бен-Гада́д, говорячи: Я посилав до те́бе, говорячи: Ти даси мені срібло своє, і золото своє, і жіно́к своїх, і синів своїх.
The messengers came again and said, “Thus says Ben-hadad: ‘I sent to you, saying, “Deliver to me your silver and your gold, your wives and your children.”
А взавтра цього ча́су пошлю́ я своїх рабів до тебе, і вони перешука́ють дім твій та доми твоїх рабі́в. І станеться, — на все, що сподо́бається їм, вони накладуть свої руки, та й заберуть“.
Nevertheless I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house and the houses of your servants and lay hands on whatever pleases you and take it away.’”
І скликав Ізраїлів цар усіх старши́х Кра́ю та й сказав: „Дові́дайтеся й побачите, що він шукає зла, бо послав до мене по жіно́к моїх, і по синів моїх, і по срібло моє, і по золото моє, — і я йому не відмовив“.
Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land and said, “Mark, now, and see how this man is seeking trouble, for he sent to me for my wives and my children, and for my silver and my gold, and I did not refuse him.”
І сказали до нього всі старші́ та ввесь народ: „Не слухай, і не пого́джуйся!“
And all the elders and all the people said to him, “Do not listen or consent.”
І сказав він до послів Бен-Гадада: „Скажіть моєму панові цареві: Усе, про що́ посилав ти до свого раба напоча́тку, я зроблю́, а цієї речі зробити не мо́жу“. І пішли посли, і відне́сли йому відповідь.
So he said to the messengers of Ben-hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you first demanded of your servant I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’” And the messengers departed and brought him word again.
І послав до нього Бен-Гада́д та й сказав: „Нехай так зро́блять мені бо́ги, і нехай так додаду́ть, якщо самарійського по́роху вистачить по жмені всьому народо́ві, що стоїть при мені!“
Ben-hadad sent to him and said, “The gods do so to me and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me.”
І відповів Ізраїлів цар та й сказав: „Кажіть: Хай не хва́литься той, хто меча припина́є, а той, хто розв'я́зує“!
And the king of Israel answered, “Tell him, ‘Let not him who straps on his armor boast himself as he who takes it off.’”
І сталося, як почув він цю відповідь, — а він пив, він та царі в ша́трах, — то сказав до своїх рабів: „Пустіть тарани́!“ І вони пустили тарани́, на місто.
When Ben-hadad heard this message as he was drinking with the kings in the booths, he said to his men, “Take your positions.” And they took their positions against the city.
Аж ось один пророк підійшов до Аха́ва, Ізраїлевого царя, та й сказав: „Так сказав Господь: Чи бачив ти ввесь оцей великий на́товп? Ось Я даю його сьогодні в руку твою, і ти пізна́єш, що Я — Господь!“
Ahab Defeats Ben-hadad
And behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel and said, “Thus says the Lord, Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will give it into your hand this day, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

І сказав Ахав: „Ким?“ А той відказав: „Так сказав Господь: Слу́гами начальників округ“. І сказав: „Хто розпічне́ війну?“ А той відказав: „Ти“.
And Ahab said, “By whom?” He said, “Thus says the Lord, By the servants of the governors of the districts.” Then he said, “Who shall begin the battle?” He answered, “You.”
І перелічив він слуг начальників судо́вих окру́г, і було дві сотні й тридцять два. А по них перелічив увесь наро́д, усіх Ізраїлевих синів, — сім тисяч.
Then he mustered the servants of the governors of the districts, and they were 232. And after them he mustered all the people of Israel, seven thousand.
І вийшли вони опі́вдні, а Бен-Гадад пив п'я́ний у ша́трах, він та царі, — тридцять і два царі, що допомагали йому.
And they went out at noon, while Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the booths, he and the thirty-two kings who helped him.
І вийшли напоча́тку слуги начальників округ. І послав Бен-Гадад, і доне́сли йому, кажучи: „Ось повихо́дили люди з Самарії.“
The servants of the governors of the districts went out first. And Ben-hadad sent out scouts, and they reported to him, “Men are coming out from Samaria.”
А він відказав: „Якщо на мир вийшли вони, — схопі́ть їх живих, а якщо на війну повихо́дили, — теж живими схопі́ть їх у неволю!“
He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive. Or if they have come out for war, take them alive.”
А то вийшли з міста слуги начальників округ та ві́йсько, що йшло за ними.
So these went out of the city, the servants of the governors of the districts and the army that followed them.
І побива́ли вони один о́дного, і побігли сирі́яни, а Ізра́їль їх гнав. Та втік Бен-Гадад, сирійський цар, на коні та з верхівця́ми.
And each struck down his man. The Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them, but Ben-hadad king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen.
І вийшов Ізраїлів цар, та й побив коні та колесни́ці, і завдав в Сирії великої пора́зки.
And the king of Israel went out and struck the horses and chariots, and struck the Syrians with a great blow.
І підійшов пророк до Ізраїлевого царя та й сказав йому: „Іди, тримайся мужньо, і пізнай та побач, що́ ти зробиш, бо, як мине рік, сирійський цар зно́ву пі́де на тебе“.
Then the prophet came near to the king of Israel and said to him, “Come, strengthen yourself, and consider well what you have to do, for in the spring the king of Syria will come up against you.”
А слуги сирійського царя сказали йому: „Бог гір — їхній Бог, тому́ вони були сильніші від нас. Але воюймо з ними на рівни́ні, — присягаємо, що бу́демо сильніші від них!
And the servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hills, and so they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
І зроби цю річ: Поскида́й тих царів, кожного з його місця, і понаставля́й намі́сників замість них.
And do this: remove the kings, each from his post, and put commanders in their places,
А ти збереш собі ві́йсько, як те, що відпало від тебе, і ко́ней, скільки було ко́ней, і колесни́ць, скільки було колесни́ць, і бу́демо воювати з ними на рівни́ні. Присягаємо, що ми бу́демо сильніші від них!“ І він послухався їхнього голосу, і зробив так.
and muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.” And he listened to their voice and did so.

А Ізраїлеві сини були перегля́нені й забезпечені живністю, та й вийшли навпроти них. І таборува́ли Ізраїлеві сини навпроти них, як дві отарі кіз, а сиріяни напо́внили Край.

І підійшов Божий чоловік, і говорив до Ізраїлевого царя та й сказав: „Так сказав Господь: Тому́, що сказали сирі́яни: Господь — Бог гір, а не Бог долин Він, то дам увесь цей великий на́товп у твою руку, і ви пізна́єте, що Я — Господь!“
And a man of God came near and said to the king of Israel, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The Lord is a god of the hills but he is not a god of the valleys,” therefore I will give all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’”
І таборува́ли ті навпроти тих сім день. І сталося сьомого дня, і розпали́вся бій, — і побили Ізраїлеві сини Сирію, сто тисяч піхоти, одно́го дня.
And they encamped opposite one another seven days. Then on the seventh day the battle was joined. And the people of Israel struck down of the Syrians 100,000 foot soldiers in one day.
А позосталі повтікали до Афеку, до міста, та впав мур на двадцять і сім тисяч позосталих чоловіка. А Бен-Гадад утік і ввійшов до міста, до вну́трішньої кімнати.
And the rest fled into the city of Aphek, and the wall fell upon 27,000 men who were left.

І сказали до нього його слуги: „Ось ми чули, що царі Ізраїлевого дому — вони царі милости́ві. Покладім вере́тища на сте́гна свої, а шнури́ — на свої голови, і вийдім до Ізраїлевого царя, — може він пощади́ть твою душу“.
And his servants said to him, “Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Let us put sackcloth around our waists and ropes on our heads and go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life.”
І підпереза́ли вони вере́тищами сте́гна свої, а шнури — на свої голови, і прийшли до Ізраїлевого царя та й сказали: „Твій раб Бен-Гадад сказав: Нехай живе душа моя!“ А той відказав: „Чи він іще живий? Він мій брат!“
So they tied sackcloth around their waists and put ropes on their heads and went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-hadad says, ‘Please, let me live.’” And he said, “Does he still live? He is my brother.”
А ті люди взяли́ це за натя́ка, і поспішили скориста́тися з того й сказали: „Брат твій Бен-Гадад!“ І той відказав: „Підіть, приведіть його!“ І вийшов до нього Бен-Гадад, а той посадив його на колесни́цю.
Now the men were watching for a sign, and they quickly took it up from him and said, “Yes, your brother Ben-hadad.” Then he said, “Go and bring him.” Then Ben-hadad came out to him, and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
І сказав до нього Бен-Гадад: „Ті міста, що ба́тько мій був забрав від твого батька, я поверну́. І ти уря́диш собі в Дама́ску вулиці, як мій батько урядив був у Самарії“. „А я — сказав Ахав — по умові відпущу́ тебе“. І він склав з ним умову, та й відпустив його.
And Ben-hadad said to him, “The cities that my father took from your father I will restore, and you may establish bazaars for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” And Ahab said, “I will let you go on these terms.” So he made a covenant with him and let him go.
Тоді один чоловік із пророчих синів сказав до свого ближнього за Господнім словом: „Удар мене!“ Та відмовився той чоловік ударити його.

And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow at the command of the Lord, “Strike me, please.” But the man refused to strike him.

І сказав він йому: „За те, що ти не послухався Господнього голосу, то ось ти пі́деш від мене — і вб'є тебе лев!“ І пішов той від нього, і спіткав його лев та й забив.
Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, behold, as soon as you have gone from me, a lion shall strike you down.” And as soon as he had departed from him, a lion met him and struck him down.
І знайшов він іншого чоловіка та й сказав: „Удар мене!“ І той чоловік ударив його, — ударив та й зранив.
Then he found another man and said, “Strike me, please.” And the man struck him — struck him and wounded him.
І пішов той пророк, і став цареві на дорозі, і перебрався, і закрив хусткою очі свої.
So the prophet departed and waited for the king by the way, disguising himself with a bandage over his eyes.
І сталося, цар прохо́див, а він кричав до царя й говорив: „Раб твій ввійшов у сере́дину бою. Аж ось один чоловік відійшов, і підвів до мене мужа й сказав: Пильнуй цього мужа! Якщо його не стане, то буде твоє життя замість його життя, або відважиш тала́нта срібла.
І сталося, раб твій робив тут та тут, а він зник“. І сказав до нього Ізраїлів цар: „Такий твій при́суд, — ти сам проказа́в“.
And as your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” The king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you yourself have decided it.”
А той спішно зняв хустку з-над очей своїх, — і пізнав його Ізраїлів цар, що він із пророків.
Then he hurried to take the bandage away from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets.
А той йому сказав: „Так сказав Господь: Тому́, що ти ви́пустив із руки чоловіка, Мені призна́ченого, то буде життя твоє за його життя, а наро́д твій — за його народ!“
