Вісімнадцятого року царя Єровоама та зацарював Авійя над Юдою.
Abijah King of Judah
In the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah,

Три роки царював він в Єрусалимі. А ім'я́ його матері — Міхая, дочка́ Уріїла з Ґів'ї. І війна́ точилася між Авійєю та між Єровоамом.
I зачав Авійя війну́ з ві́йськом хоробрих воякі́в, — чотири сотні тисяч ви́браних мужів, а Єровоам приготовився до війни з ним з вісьмома́ сотнями тисяч ви́браних мужів, хоробрих воякі́в.
Abijah went into battle with an army of four hundred thousand able fighting men, and Jeroboam drew up a battle line against him with eight hundred thousand able troops.
І встав Авійя з-над гори Цемараїм, що в Єфремових гора́х, та й сказав: „Послухайте мене, Єровоаме, та ввесь Ізраїлю!
Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim, in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Jeroboam and all Israel, listen to me!
Чи ж не вам знати, що Господь, Бог Ізраїлів, дав Давидові царство над Ізраїлем навіки, йому́ та синам його, соляною умовою?
Don’t you know that the Lord, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of salt?
Та встав Єровоам, Неватів син, раб Соломона, Давидового сина, і збунтувався на пана свого́.
Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, an official of Solomon son of David, rebelled against his master.
І зібралися до нього люди пусті, нікчемні, і стали міцніші від Рехав'ама, Соломонового сина. А Рехав'ам був юнак та м'якосердий, — і не був сильним проти них.
Some worthless scoundrels gathered around him and opposed Rehoboam son of Solomon when he was young and indecisive and not strong enough to resist them.
А тепер ви говорите, щоб бути сильними проти Господнього царства в руці Давидових синів, а вас велика кількість, і з вами золоті тельці, яких Єровоам понаро́блював вам за богів.
“And now you plan to resist the kingdom of the Lord, which is in the hands of David’s descendants. You are indeed a vast army and have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made to be your gods.
Чи ж ви не повиганяли Господніх священиків, Ааро́нових синів, та Левитів? І понаставля́ли ви собі священиків, як ставлять наро́ди цих країв, — кожен, хто при́йде, щоб посвятитися молодим бичком та сімома́ баранами, то стає священиком для того, що не є Богом.
But didn’t you drive out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and make priests of your own as the peoples of other lands do? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams may become a priest of what are not gods.
А ми, Бог наш — Господь, і ми не полишили Його, а наші священики, що служать Господе́ві, це Ааронові сини, а Левити — при службі.
“As for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not forsaken him. The priests who serve the Lord are sons of Aaron, and the Levites assist them.
І ми прино́симо Господе́ві цілопа́лення кожного ранку та кожного вечора, і запашне́ кадило, і уклада́ння хліба на чистому столі, і золотий свічник та лямпа́ди його, щоб запалювати кожного вечора, бо ми стереже́мо службу Господа, нашого Бога, а ви полишили Його!
Every morning and evening they present burnt offerings and fragrant incense to the Lord. They set out the bread on the ceremonially clean table and light the lamps on the gold lampstand every evening. We are observing the requirements of the Lord our God. But you have forsaken him.
І ось з нами на чолі Бог, і священики Його, і голосні су́рми, щоб сурми́ти на вас. Ізраїлеві сини, — не воюйте з Господом, Богом вашим, бо вам не поведе́ться!“
God is with us; he is our leader. His priests with their trumpets will sound the battle cry against you. People of Israel, do not fight against the Lord, the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.”
А Єровоам вирядив за́сідку, щоб пішла позад них, — і були вони перед Юдою, а за́сідка — позад них.
Now Jeroboam had sent troops around to the rear, so that while he was in front of Judah the ambush was behind them.
І обернулися юдеї, аж ось у них бій спе́реду та зза́ду! І кли́кали вони до Господа, а священики сурми́ли в су́рми...
Judah turned and saw that they were being attacked at both front and rear. Then they cried out to the Lord. The priests blew their trumpets
І закричали юдеї. І сталося, як юдеї закричали, то Бог ударив Єровоама та всього Ізраїля перед Авійєю та перед Юдою.
and the men of Judah raised the battle cry. At the sound of their battle cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
І повтікали ізра́їльтяни перед Юдою, і Бог дав їх в їхню руку.
The Israelites fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hands.
І вдарили в них Авійя та народ його великою по́разою, і попа́дали трупи з Ізраїля, — п'ять сотень тисяч ви́браних мужів!
Abijah and his troops inflicted heavy losses on them, so that there were five hundred thousand casualties among Israel’s able men.
І впокорилися Ізраїлеві сини того ча́су, а Юдині сини зміцніли, — бо опиралися на Господа, Бога їхніх батьків.
The Israelites were subdued on that occasion, and the people of Judah were victorious because they relied on the Lord, the God of their ancestors.
І гнався Авійя за Єровоамом, і здобув від нього міста́: Бет-Ел та залежні його міста, і Єшану та залежні її міста, і Ефрон та залежні його міста.
Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took from him the towns of Bethel, Jeshanah and Ephron, with their surrounding villages.
І Єровоам не затримав сили вже за днів Авійї. І вдарив його Господь, і він помер.
Jeroboam did not regain power during the time of Abijah. And the Lord struck him down and he died.
І зміцнився Авійя, і взяв собі чотирна́дцять жіно́к, і породив двадцять і двоє синів та шістнадцятеро дочо́к.
But Abijah grew in strength. He married fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
