The Jews Destroy Their Tormentors
Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day, the time came for the king’s command and his decree to be executed. On the day that the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, the opposite occurred, in that the Jews themselves overpowered those who hated them.

зібра́лися юдеї в своїх міста́х по всіх окру́гах царя Ахашвероша, щоб простягну́ти руку на тих, що заду́мували їм лихо, та ніхто́ не став перед ними, бо страх перед ними напав на всі наро́ди.
The Jews gathered together in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hands on those who sought their harm. And no one could withstand them, because fear of them fell upon all people.
А всі зверхники округ, і сатрапи, і намісники, і викона́вці царсько́ї праці підтри́мували юдеїв, бо напав на них страх перед Мордехаєм.
And all the officials of the provinces, the satraps, the governors, and all those doing the king’s work, helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.
Бо Мордеха́й став великим у царсько́му домі, а вістка про нього покоти́лась по всіх окру́гах, бо той чоловік, Мордехай, усе ріс.
For Mordecai was great in the king’s palace, and his fame spread throughout all the provinces; for this man Mordecai became increasingly prominent.
І били юдеї всіх своїх ворогі́в, побива́ючи мече́м, і забиваючи та вигу́блюючи їх, і робили з своїми ворогами за своєю волею.
Thus the Jews defeated all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, with slaughter and destruction, and did what they pleased with those who hated them.
А в за́мку Су́зи юдеї позабивали та повигу́блювали п'ять сотень чоловіка,
десятьо́х синів Га́мана, Гаммедатового сина, нена́висника юдеїв, забили, а на грабу́нок не простягли своєї руки.
Того дня число забитих у за́мку Су́зи прийшло перед цареве обличчя.
І сказав цар до цариці Есте́ри: „У за́мку Су́зи юдеї позабива́ли та повигу́блювали п'ять сотень чоловіка та десятьох Гаманових синів. Що вони зробили в решті царевих окру́г? І яке жада́ння твоє? І бу́де тобі вво́лене. І яке ще проха́ння твоє? І бу́де зро́блене“.
And the king said to Queen Esther, “The Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the citadel, and the ten sons of Haman. What have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? Now what is your petition? It shall be granted to you. Or what is your further request? It shall be done.”
І відповіла Есте́р: „Якщо це цареві вгодне, нехай бу́де да́не юдеям, що в Су́зах, також узавтра вчинити за зако́ном цього дня, а десятьох Гаманових синів нехай повісять на ши́бениці“.
Then Esther said, “If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Shushan to do again tomorrow according to today’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.”
І сказав цар, щоб було зро́блено так, — і був да́ний зако́н у Сузах, а десятоьх Га́манових синів повісили.
So the king commanded this to be done; the decree was issued in Shushan, and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.
І зібра́лися юдеї, що в Су́зах, також чотирна́дцятого дня місяця ада́р, і ви́били в Су́зах три сотні чоловіка, а на грабу́нок не простигли своєї руки.
А решта юдеїв, що жили по царськи́х окру́гах, зібралися та й стали до бо́ю за своє життя, і відпочи́ли від ворогів своїх. І позабива́ли вони між своїми нена́висниками сімдеся́т і п'ять тисяч, а на грабу́нок не простягли́ своєї руки.
The remainder of the Jews in the king’s provinces gathered together and protected their lives, had rest from their enemies, and killed seventy-five thousand of their enemies; but they did not lay a hand on the plunder.
Це було трина́дцятого дня місяця адара, а чотирна́дцятого в ньому настав мир, — і зробили його днем гости́ни та радости.
А юдеї, що в Су́зах, збиралися тринадцятого дня в ньому та чотирна́дцятого в ньому, а мир мали п'ятнадцятого дня в ньому, — і зробили його днем гости́ни та радости.
Тому́ то юдеї неогоро́джених селищ, що сидять по неогоро́джених містах, роблять чотирна́дцятий день місяця адара днем радости й гостини та свята, та днем посила́ння дару́нків один о́дному.
Therefore the Jews of the villages who dwelt in the unwalled towns celebrated the fourteenth day of the month of Adar with gladness and feasting, as a holiday, and for sending presents to one another.
А Мордехай описав ці події, і порозсилав листи́ до всіх юдеїв, що по всіх окру́гах царя Ахашвероша, до близьки́х та далеких,
And Mordecai wrote these things and sent letters to all the Jews, near and far, who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus,
щоб вони постанови́ли святкува́ти чотирна́дцятий день місяця ада́ра та п'ятнадцятий день у ньому кожного року,
to establish among them that they should celebrate yearly the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar,
як ті дні, коли юдеї відпочи́ли від ворогів своїх, і як той місяць, коли їм сум оберну́вся на радість, жало́ба — на свято, щоб зробити їх днями гости́ни та радости, і посила́ння дару́нків один о́дному та дару́нків убогим.
as the days on which the Jews had rest from their enemies, as the month which was turned from sorrow to joy for them, and from mourning to a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and joy, of sending presents to one another and gifts to the poor.
І прийняли́ юдеї це, що зачали́ робити, і про що́ написав їм Мордеха́й,
So the Jews accepted the custom which they had begun, as Mordecai had written to them,
що аґаґ'янин Га́ман, син Гаммедатів, нена́висник усіх юдеїв, замишля́в був на юдеїв, щоб ви́губити їх, і кидав пу́ра, цебто жеребка́, на збенте́ження їх та на згубу їхню.
because Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to annihilate them, and had cast Pur (that is, the lot), to consume them and destroy them;
Та коли прийшла вона, Естер, перед обличчя, царя́ він наказав листом: „Нехай обе́рнеться його злий за́дум, якого він заду́мав був на юдеїв, на його го́лову!“ І повісили його та синів його на ши́бениці.
Тому́ то й назвали ці дні: Пурі́м, від імени „пур“. Тому то згідно зо всіма́ словами цього листа, і що вони бачили про це й що тра́пилося з ними,
юдеї постанови́ли й прийняли́ на себе й на наща́дків своїх, та на всіх, хто поєдна́ється з ними, і не відсту́плять, але́ щоб святкува́ти два ті дні кожного року згідно з напи́саним про них та згідно з їхнім ча́сом.
the Jews established and imposed it upon themselves and their descendants and all who would join them, that without fail they should celebrate these two days every year, according to the written instructions and according to the prescribed time,
А дні ці мають спомина́тися та святкува́тися в кожному поколінні, у кожному ро́ді, у кожній окру́зі, у кожному місті. А ці дні, Пурі́м, не минуться між юде́ями, а пам'ять про них не скінчи́ться з їхнього насіння.
that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city, that these days of Purim should not fail to be observed among the Jews, and that the memory of them should not perish among their descendants.
І написала цариця Есте́р, дочка Авіхаїлова, та юдеянин Мордехай з сильним домага́нням другий раз про те, щоб вико́нувати цього листа́ про Пурім.
Then Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, with Mordecai the Jew, wrote with full authority to confirm this second letter about Purim.
І порозсила́в він листи́ до всіх юдеїв, до ста й двадцяти́ й семи окру́г Ахашверо́шового ца́рства, зо словами миру та правди,
And Mordecai sent letters to all the Jews, to the one hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,
щоб вони вико́нували ті дні Пурім у їх озна́чених часа́х, як постанови́в про них юде́янин Мордеха́й та цариця Есте́р, і як вони самі постанови́ли на себе та на наща́дків своїх при́писи пості́в та їхнього голосі́ння.
to confirm these days of Purim at their appointed time, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had prescribed for them, and as they had decreed for themselves and their descendants concerning matters of their fasting and lamenting.
