A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.
Кращий смуток від смі́ху, бо при обличчі сумні́м добре серце!
Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
Серце мудрих — у домі жало́би, а серце безглу́здих — у домі весе́лощів.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
Краще слухати до́кір розумного, аніж слу́хати пісні безумних,
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
бо як трі́скот терни́ни під горщиком, такий сміх нерозу́много. Теж марно́та й оце!
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.
Коли мудрий кого утискає, то й сам нерозумним стає, а хаба́р губить серце.
Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
Кінець ді́ла ліпший від поча́тку його; ліпший терпеливий від чванькува́того!
Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
Не спіши в своїм дусі, щоб гні́ватися, бо гнів спочиває у на́драх глупці́в.
Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
Не кажи: „Що́ це сталось, що перші дні були кращі за ці?“, бо не з мудрости ти запитався про це.
Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.
Добра мудрість з багатством, а прибу́ток для тих, хто ще сонечко бачить,
Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.
бо в тіні мудрости — як у тіні срі́бла, та ко́ристь пізна́ння у то́му, що мудрість життя зберігає тому́, хто має її.
For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
Розваж Божий учинок, — бо хто́ може те ви́простати, що Він покриви́в?
Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?
За доброго дня користай із добра́, за злого ж — розважуй: Одне й друге вчинив Бог на те, щоб люди́на нічо́го по собі не знайшла́!
In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
В днях марно́ти своєї я всьо́го набачивсь: буває справедливий, що гине в своїй справедливості, буває й безбожний, що довго живе в своїм злі.
Limits of Human Wisdom
All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

Не будь справедливим занадто, і не роби себе мудрим над міру: пощо нищити маєш себе?
Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?
Не будь несправедливим занадто, і немудрим не будь: пощо маєш померти в неча́сі своїм?
Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
Добре, щоб ти ухопи́вся за це, але й з того своєї руки не спускай, бо богобоя́зний втече від усього того.
It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
Мудрість робить мудрого сильнішим за десятьох володарів, що в місті.
Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.
Немає люди́ни праведної на землі, що робила б добро́ й не грішила,
For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
тому́ не клади свого серця на всякі слова́, що гово́рять, щоб не чути свого раба, коли він лихосло́вить тебе,
Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
знає бо серце твоє, що багато разі́в також ти лихосло́вив на інших!
For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
Усе́ це я в мудрості ви́пробував, і сказав: „Стану мудрим!“ Та дале́ка від мене вона!
All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
Дале́ке оте, що було́, і глибо́ке, глибо́ке, — хто зна́йде його?
That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
Звернувся я серцем своїм, щоб пізна́ти й розві́дати, та шукати премудрість і розум, та щоб пізнати, що безбожність — глупо́та, а нерозум — безу́мство!
I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:
І знайшов я річ гіршу від смерти — то жінку, бо па́стка вона, її ж серце — тене́та, а руки її — то кайда́ни! Хто добрий у Бога — врято́ваний буде від неї, а грішного схо́пить вона!
And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
Подивися, оце я знайшов, сказав Пропові́дник: рівняймо одне до одно́го, щоб знайти зрозумі́ння!
Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:
Чого ще шукала душа моя, та не знайшла: я люди́ну знайшов одну з тисячі, але жінки між ними всіма́ не знайшов!
Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
