За третього року царюва́ння Йояки́ма, Юдиного царя, прийшов Навуходоно́сор, цар вавилонський, до Єрусалиму, та й обліг його́.
The Choice Young Men
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

І дав Госпо́дь в його руку Йояки́ма, Юдиного царя, та частину по́суду Божого дому, і він відправив їх до кра́ю вавилонського, до дому свого бога, а по́суд відправив до скарбни́чного дому свого бога.
The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into the treasury of his god.
І сказав цар до Ашпеназа, начальника його е́внухів, щоб приве́сти з Ізраїлевих синів, і з царсько́го, і з шляхе́тського роду,
Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his officials, to bring in some of the sons of Israel, including some of the royal family and of the nobles,
юнакі́в, що нема в них жодної ва́ди, і вони вродли́вого ви́гляду та розумні в усякій мудрості, і здібні до знання́, і розуміють науку, і щоб у них була́ мото́рність служи́ти в царсько́му пала́ці, і щоб навчати їх книг та мови халдеїв.
youths in whom was no defect, who were good-looking, showing intelligence in every branch of wisdom, endowed with understanding and discerning knowledge, and who had ability for serving in the king’s court; and he ordered him to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.
І призна́чив їм цар щоденну пожи́ву, з царсько́ї ї́жі та з вина, що сам його пив, а на їхнє вихова́ння — три роки, а по закі́нченні їх стануть вони перед царськи́м обличчям.
The king appointed for them a daily ration from the king’s choice food and from the wine which he drank, and appointed that they should be educated three years, at the end of which they were to enter the king’s personal service.
І були́ серед них з Юдиних синів Даниїл, Ана́нія, Мисаї́л та Аза́рія.
Now among them from the sons of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.
А нача́льник е́внухів дав їм інші імена́, і дав Даниїлові ім'я́ Валтаса́р, а Ананії — Шадра́х, а Мисаїлові — Меша́х, а Азарії — Авед-Не́ґо.
Then the commander of the officials assigned new names to them; and to Daniel he assigned the name Belteshazzar, to Hananiah Shadrach, to Mishael Meshach and to Azariah Abed-nego.
І поклав Даниїл собі на серце, що він не оскверни́ться ї́жею царя та питво́м, що той сам його пив, і просив від начальника е́внухів, щоб не оскверни́тися.
Daniel’s Resolve
But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself.
І дав Бог Даниїлові ласку та милість перед начальником е́внухів.
Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials,
І сказав начальник е́внухів до Даниїла: „Боюсь я свого пана царя, бо він ви́значив вашу ї́жу та ваше питво́. Бо коли б він побачив ваше обличчя худішим, ніж у тих юнакі́в, що вашого віку, то ви зробите мою голову винуватою перед царем“.
and the commander of the officials said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces looking more haggard than the youths who are your own age? Then you would make me forfeit my head to the king.”
І сказав Даниїл до старшо́го, якого начальник е́внухів призна́чив над Даниїлом, Ананією, Мисаїлом та Азарією:
But Daniel said to the overseer whom the commander of the officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,
„Ви́пробуй но своїх рабів десять день, і нехай дають нам із ярини́, — і ми бу́демо їсти, та воду — і бу́демо пити.
“Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink.
І нехай з'я́вляться перед тобою наші обличчя та обличчя тих юнакі́в, що їдять царську́ їжу, — і згідно з тим, що побачиш, зроби зо своїми рабами“.
“Then let our appearance be observed in your presence and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king’s choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see.”
І той послухався їх у цьому, і випробо́вував їх десять день.
So he listened to them in this matter and tested them for ten days.
А по десяти днях їхній вигляд ви́явився кращим, і вони були здорові́ші на тілі, аніж усі ті юнаки́, що їли царську́ ї́жу.
At the end of ten days their appearance seemed better and they were fatter than all the youths who had been eating the king’s choice food.
І цей старший відно́сив їхню їжу та вино їхнього пиття́, а давав їм ярину́.
So the overseer continued to withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and kept giving them vegetables.
А ці че́тверо юнакі́в, — дав їм Бог пізна́ння та розумі́ння в кожній книжці та мудрості, а Даниїл розумівся на всякому виді́нні та снах.
As for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and intelligence in every branch of literature and wisdom; Daniel even understood all kinds of visions and dreams.
А на кінець тих днів, коли цар сказав приве́сти їх, то начальник е́внухів привів їх перед обличчя Навуходоно́сорове.
Then at the end of the days which the king had specified for presenting them, the commander of the officials presented them before Nebuchadnezzar.
І цар розмовляв з ними, і зо всіх них жоден не був зна́йдений таким, як Даниїл, Ана́нія, Мисаї́л та Аза́рія. І вони ставали перед царськи́м обличчям.
The king talked with them, and out of them all not one was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s personal service.
А всяку справу мудрости та розуму, що шукав від них цар, то він знайшов їх уде́сятеро мудрішими від усіх чарівникі́в та заклиначі́в, що були́ в усьому його царстві.
As for every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and conjurers who were in all his realm.
