So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
І сталось, як були́ вони там, то настав їй день породити.
While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,

and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
А в тій стороні були́ пастухи, які пильнували на полі, і нічно́ї пори вартували отару свою.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
Аж ось а́нгол Господній з'явивсь коло них, і слава Господня ося́яла їх. І вони перестра́шились стра́хом великим,
An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
Та а́нгол промовив до них: „Не лякайтесь, бо я ось благовіщу́ вам радість велику, що станеться лю́дям усім.
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
Бо сьогодні в Давидовім місті народився для вас Спаситель, Який є Христос Господь.
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
А ось вам ознака: Дитину сповиту ви зна́йдете, що в я́слах лежатиме“.
This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
І ось ра́птом з'явилася з а́нголом сила велика небесного війська, що Бога хвалили й казали:
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
„Слава Богу на висоті, і на землі спокій, у людях добра воля!“
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

І сталось, коли анголи́ відійшли від них в небо, пастухи зачали́ говори́ти один о́дному: „Ходім до Вифлеєму й побачмо, що́ сталося там, про що́ сповістив нас Господь“.
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
І прийшли, поспішаючи, і знайшли там Марію та Йо́сипа, та Дитинку, що в я́слах лежала.
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.
А побачивши, розповіли́ про все те, що́ про Цю Дитину було́ їм зві́щено.
When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,
І всі, хто почув, дивувались тому, що́ їм пастухи говорили.
and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.
А Марія оці всі слова́ зберігала, розважаючи, у серці своїм.
But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
Пастухи ж повернулись, прославляючи й хвалячи Бога за все, що почули й побачили, так як їм було сказано.
The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
Коли ж ви́повнились вісім день, щоб обрізати Його, то Ісусом назвали Його, як був а́нгол назвав, перше ніж Він в утро́бі зачався.
On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.
А коли — за Зако́ном Мойсея — минулися дні їхнього очи́щення, то до Єрусалиму прине́сли Його, щоб поставити Його перед Господом,
Jesus Presented in the Temple

як у Зако́ні Господнім написано: „Кожне дитя чоловічої ста́ті, що розкриває утро́бу, має бути посвя́чене Господу“,
і щоб жертву скла́сти, як у Зако́ні Господньому сказано, — „пару горлича́т або двоє голубеня́т“.
І ото був в Єрусалимі один чоловік, йому ймення Семе́н, — люди́на праведна та благочести́ва, — що потіхи чекав для Ізраїля. І Святий Дух був на ньому.
Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.
І від Духа Святого йому було зві́щено смерти не бачити, перше ніж побачить Христа Господнього.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.
І Дух у храм припрова́див його. І як внесли Дитину Ісуса батьки́, щоб за Нього вчинити звича́єм зако́нним,
Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,
тоді взяв він на руки Його, хвалу Богу віддав та й промовив:
Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
„Нині відпускаєш раба Свого́, Владико, за словом Твоїм із ми́ром,
яке Ти приготува́в перед всіма наро́дами,
which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
Світло на просвіту поганам і на славу наро́ду Твого Ізраїля!“
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”

І дивувалися ба́тько Його й мати тим, що про Нього було́ розповіджене.
The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him.
А Семен їх поблагословив та й прорік до Марії, Його матері: „Ось призначений Цей багатьо́м на падіння й устава́ння в Ізраїлі, і на знак спереча́ння, —
Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against,
і меч душу проши́є самій же тобі, — щоб відкрились думки́ сердець багатьох!“
so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
Була й Анна пророчиця, дочка́ Фануїлова з племени Аси́рового, — вона дожила́ до глибокої старости, живши з мужем сім ро́ків від свого дівува́ння,
There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,
удова ро́ків вісімдесяти й чотирьох, що не відлучалась від храму, служачи Богові вдень і вночі поста́ми й моли́твами.
І години тієї вона надійшла, Бога сла́вила та говорила про Нього всім, хто визво́лення Єрусалиму чекав.
Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.
А як виконали за Зако́ном Господнім усе, то вернулись вони в Галілею, до міста свого Назарету.
When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.
А Дитина росла та зміцнялася духом, набираючись мудрости. І благодать Божа на Ній пробува́ла.
And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.
А батьки́ Його щорічно ходили до Єрусалиму на свято Пасхи.
The Boy Jesus at the Temple
Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.

І коли мав Він дванадцять ро́ків, вони за звича́єм на свято пішли.
When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.
Як дні ж свята скінчи́лись були, і вертались вони, молодий Ісус в Єрусалимі лиши́вся, а Йо́сип та мати Його не знали того.
After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.
Вони ду́мали, що Він із подорожніми йде; пройшли день дороги, та й стали шукати Його поміж ро́дичами та знайо́мими.
Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.
Але, не знайшовши, вернулися в Єрусалим, та й шукали Його.
When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.
І сталось, що третього дня відшукали у храмі Його, як сидів серед учителів, і вислу́хував їх, і запитував їх.
After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
Усі ж, хто слухав Його, дивувалися розумові та Його відповідям.
Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.
І як вони Його вгледіли, то здивувались, а мати сказала до Нього: „Дитино, — чому так Ти зробив нам? Ось Твій батько та я із журбо́ю шукали Тебе“.
When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
А Він їм відказав: „Чого ж ви шукали Мене? Хіба ви не знали, що повинно Мені бути в тому, що належить Моєму Отцеві?“
Та не зрозуміли вони того сло́ва, що Він їм говорив.
But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
І пішов Він із ними, і прибув у Назарет, і був їм слухня́ний. А мати Його зберігала оці всі слова́ в своїм серці.
Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.
