    І сталось одно́го з тих днів, як навчав Він у храмі людей, та Добру Нови́ну звіщав, прийшли первосвященики й книжники з старшими,

    Jesus’ Authority Questioned

    Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him

    та й до Нього промовили, кажучи: „Скажи нам, якою вла́дою Ти чиниш оце? Або хто Тобі вла́ду цю дав?“

    and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?”

    І промовив до них Він у відповідь: „Запитаю й Я вас одну річ, — і відповідайте Мені:

    But He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me:
  • 4
    Іванове хрищення з неба було́, чи від людей?“
  • 4
    The baptism of John — was it from heaven or from men?”
  • 5
    Вони ж міркували собі й говорили: „Коли скажемо: „З неба“, відкаже: „Чого ж ви йому не повірили?“

    And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why [a]then did you not believe him?’
  • 6
    А як скажемо: „Від людей“, то всі люди камінням поб'ють нас, бо були переко́нані, що Іван — то пророк“.

    But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”

    І вони відповіли, що не знають, ізвідки.

    So they answered that they did not know where it was from.
  • 8
    А Ісус відказав їм: „То й Я не скажу́ вам, якою вла́дою Я це чиню́“.

    And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
  • 9
    І Він розповідати почав людям при́тчу оцю. „Один чоловік насадив виноградника, і віддав його винаря́м, та й відбув на час довший.

    The Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers

    Then He began to tell the people this parable: “A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to [b]vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time.

    А певного ча́су послав він раба до своїх винарі́в, щоб дали йому частку з плоді́в виноградника. Та побили його винарі, і відіслали ні з чим.

    Now at [c]vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

    І знову послав він до них раба і́ншого, а вони й того збили й знева́жили, — та й відіслали ні з чим.

    Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.

    І послав він ще третього, а вони й того зранили й вигнали.
  • 12
    And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.

    Сказав тоді пан виноградника: „Що́ маю робити? Пошлю свого сина улю́бленого, — може його посоро́мляться“.

    “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’
  • 14
    Винарі́ ж, як його вгледіли, міркували собі та казали: „Це спадкоє́мець; ходім, замордуймо його, щоб спа́дщина наша була́“.

    But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’
  • 15
    І вони його вивели за виноградника, та й убили... Що́ ж зробить їм пан виноградника?
  • 15
    So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
  • 16
    Він при́йде та й вигубить цих винарів, виноградника ж іншим віддасть“. Слухачі ж повіли́: „Нехай цього не станеться!“

    He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others.”
    And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!”

    А Він глянув на них та й сказав: „Що ж оце, що написане: „Камінь, що його будівничі відкинули, той нарі́жним став каменем!
  • 17
    Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written:
    ‘The stone which the builders rejected
    Has become the chief cornerstone’?
  • 18
    Кожен, хто впаде́ на цей камінь — розі́б'ється, а на кого він сам упаде́, — то розчавить його́“.
  • 18
    Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”
  • 19
    А книжники й первосвященики руки на Нього хотіли накласти тієї години, але побоялись наро́ду. Бо вони розуміли, що про них Він цю притчу сказав.

    And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they [d]feared the people — for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

    І вони слідкували за Ним, і підіслали підгля́дачів, які праведних із себе вдавали, щоб зловити на слові Його, і Його видати урядові й вла́ді намісника.

    The Pharisees: Is It Lawful to Pay Taxes to Caesar?

    So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor.

    І вони запитали Його та сказали: „Учителю, знаємо ми, що Ти добре говориш і навчаєш, і не дивишся на обли́ччя, але наставляєш на Божу дорогу правдиво.

    Then they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth:

    Чи годи́ться давати податок для ке́саря, чи ні?“
  • 22
    Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
  • 23
    Знаючи ж їхню хитрість, сказав Він до них: „Чого ви Мене випробо́вуєте?
  • 23
    But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, [e]“Why do you test Me?
  • 24
    Покажіте дина́рія Мені. Чий образ і напис він має?“ Вони відказали: „Кесарів“.

    Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?”
    They answered and said, “Caesar’s.”
  • 25
    А Він їм відказав: „Тож віддайте ке́сареве — ке́сареві, а Богові — Боже!“
  • 25
    And He said to them, “Render[f] therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

    І не могли вони перед людьми́ зловити на слові Його. І дивува́лись вони з Його відповіді, та й замовкли.

    But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.

    І підійшли дехто із саддукеїв, що твердять, ніби немає воскресі́ння, і запитали Його,

    The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?

    Then some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,

    та сказали: „Учителю, Мойсей написав нам: „Як умре кому брат, який має дружи́ну, а помре бездітний, — то нехай його брат візьме дружи́ну, і відно́вить насіння для брата свого“.

    saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.

    Було ж сім братів. І перший, узявши дружи́ну, бездітний умер.
  • 29
    Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children.
  • 30
    І другий узяв був ту дружи́ну, та й той вмер бездітний.
  • 30
    And the second [g]took her as wife, and he died childless.
  • 31
    І третій узяв був її, так само й усі се́меро, — і вони дітей не позоставили, та й повмирали.

    Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven [h]also; and they left no children, and died.
  • 32
    А по всіх умерла й жінка.
  • 32
    Last of all the woman died also.
  • 33
    А в воскресі́нні котро́му із них вона дружи́ною буде? Бо семеро мали за дружину її“.

    Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.”

    Ісус же промовив у відповідь їм: „Женяться й заміж виходять сини цього віку.

    Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage.
  • 35
    А ті, що будуть достойні того віку й воскресі́ння з мертвих, — не будуть ні женитись, ні заміж вихо́дити,
  • 35
    But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;
  • 36
    ні вмерти вже не можуть, бо рівні вони ангола́м, і вони сини Божі, синами воскресі́ння бувши.

    nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

    А що мертві встають, то й Мойсей показав — при кущі, — коли він назвав Господа „Богом Авраамовим, і Богом Ісаковим, і Богом Якововим“.

    But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’

    Бог же не є Богом мертвих, а живих, бо всі в Нього живуть.“
  • 38
    For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him.”

    Дехто ж із книжників відповіли та сказали: „Учителю, — Ти добре сказав!“

    Then some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.”

    І вже не насмілювалися питати Його ні про що́.

    But after that they dared not question Him anymore.

    І сказав Він до них: „Як то кажуть, що Христос син Давидів?

    Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?

    And He said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David?

    Таж Давид сам говорить у книзі Псалмів: „Промовив Господь Господе́ві моєму: сядь право́руч Мене,

    Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms:
    ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
    “Sit at My right hand,
  • 43
    поки не покладу́ Я Твоїх ворогів підніжком ногам Твоїм!“
  • 43
    Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
  • 44
    Отже, Давид Його Господом зве, — як же Він йому син?“
  • 44
    Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?”

    І, як увесь наро́д слухав, Він промовив до учнів Своїх:

    Beware of the Scribes

    Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples,
  • 46
    „Стережіться книжників, що хочуть у довгих одежах ходити, і люблять привіти на ринках, і перші лавки́ в синагогах, і перші місця на бенке́тах,
  • 46
    “Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts,
  • 47
    що вдови́ні хати́ поїдають, і моляться довго напо́каз, — вони тяжче осу́дження при́ймуть!“
  • 47
    who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
