Був же хворий один, Ла́зар у Віфа́нії, із села Марії й сестри її Марти.
The Raising of Lazarus
A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha.

А Марія, що брат її Лазар був хворий, була та, що помазала Господа миром, і воло́ссям своїм Йому но́ги обте́рла.
Тоді се́стри послали до Нього, говорячи: „Ось незду́жає, Господи, той, що любиш його!“
So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.”
Як почув же Ісус, то промовив: „Не на смерть ця недуга, а на Божу славу, — щоб Син Божий прославився нею“.
But when Jesus heard about it he said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.”
А коли Він почув, що нездужає той, то зостався два дні на тім місці, де був.
he stayed where he was for the next two days.
Після ж того говорить до учнів: „Ходімо зно́ву в Юдею“.
Finally, he said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.”
Йому учні сказали: „Учителю, таж допі́ру юдеї хотіли камінням побити Тебе, а Ти знов туди пі́деш?“
Ісус відповів: „Хіба дня не дванадцять годин? Як хто ходить за дня, не спіткне́ться, — цьогосвітнє бо світло він бачить.
Jesus replied, “There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world.
А хто ходить нічно́ї пори, той спіткнеться, — бо немає в нім світла“.
But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.”
Оце Він сказав, а по то́му говорить до них: „Друг наш Лазар заснув, — та піду́ розбудити Його“.
Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.”
А учні сказали Йому: „Як заснув, то він, Господи, ви́дужає“.
The disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!”
Та про смерть його мовив Ісус, вони ж ду́мали, що про сонний спочи́нок Він каже.
They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.
І Я тішусь за вас, що там Я не був, щоб повірили ви. Та ходімо до нього“.
And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come, let’s go see him.”
Сказав же Хома, називаний Близню́к, до співучнів: „Ходімо й ми, щоб із Ним повмирати“.
Як прибув же Ісус, то знайшов, що чотири вже дні той у гро́бі.
When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days.
А Віфа́нія поблизу Єрусалиму була́, яких стадій з п'ятнадцять.
І багато з юдеїв до Марти й Марії прийшли, щоб за брата розва́жити їх.
and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss.
Тоді Марта, почувши, що надхо́дить Ісус, побігла зустріти Його, Марія ж удома сиділа.
When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house.
І Марта сказала Ісусові: „Коли б, Господи, був Ти отут, — то не вмер би мій брат.
Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.
Та й тепер, — знаю я, — що чого тільки в Бога попросиш, то дасть Тобі Бог!“
But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”
Відказує Марта Йому: „Знаю, що в воскресіння останнього дня він воскресне“.
“Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”
Промовив до неї Ісус: „Я воскресіння й життя. Хто вірує в мене, — хоч і вмре, буде жити.
І кожен, хто живе та хто вірує в Мене, — повіки не вмре. Чи ти віруєш в це?“
Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”
Вона каже Йому: „Так, Господи! Я вірую, що Ти Христос, Син Божий, що має прийти на цей світ“.
“Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.”
І промовивши це, відійшла, та й покликала нишком Марі́ю, сестру свою, ка́жучи: „Учитель тут, і Він кличе тебе!“
Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.”
А Ісус не ввійшов був іще до села, а знахо́дивсь на місці, де Марта зустріла Його.
Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him.
Юдеї тоді, що були з нею в домі й її розважали, як побачили, що Марія квапли́во встала й побігла, подали́ся за нею, гадаючи, що до гро́бу пішла вона, — плакати там.
When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there.
Як Марія ж прийшла туди, де був Ісус, і Його вгледіла, то припала до ніг Йому та й говорила до Нього: „Коли б, Господи, був Ти отут, то не вмер би мій брат!“
When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
А Ісус, як побачив, що плаче вона, і плачуть юдеї, що з нею прийшли, то в дусі розжа́лобився та й звору́шився Сам,
і сказав: „Де його ви поклали?“ Говорять Йому́: „Іди, Господи, та подивися!“
“Where have you put him?” he asked them.
They told him, “Lord, come and see.”
They told him, “Lord, come and see.”
А юдеї казали: „Дивись, як любив Він його!“
The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!”
А з них дехто сказали: „Чи не міг же зробити Отой, Хто очі сліпому відкрив, щоб і цей не помер?“
But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”
Ісус же розжа́лобивсь знову в Собі, і до гро́бу прийшов. Була ж то печера, і камінь на ній наляга́в.
Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance.
Промовляє Ісус: „Відваліть цього каменя!“ Сестра вмерлого Марта говорить до Нього: „Уже, Господи, чути, — бо чотири вже дні він у гро́бі“.
“Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them.
But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”

Ісус каже до неї: „Чи тобі не казав Я, що як бу́деш ти вірувати, — славу Божу побачиш?“
Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?”
І зняли́ тоді каменя. А Ісус ізвів очі до неба й промовив: „Отче, дяку прино́шу Тобі, що Мене Ти почув.
So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me.
Та Я знаю, що Ти за́вжди почуєш Мене, але ради наро́ду, що довкола стоїть, Я сказав, щоб увірували, що послав Ти Мене“.
You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.”
І, промовивши це, Він скричав гучни́м голосом: „Ла́зарю, — вийди сюди!“
Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”
І вийшов померлий, по рука́х і нога́х обв'я́заний па́сами, а обличчя у нього було́ перев'я́зане хусткою. Ісус каже до них: „Розв'яжіть його та й пустіть, щоб ходив“.
And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”
І багато з юдеїв, що посхо́дилися до Марії, та бачили те, що Він учинив, у Нього ввірували.
The Plot to Kill Jesus
Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen.
А деякі з них пішли до фарисеїв, і їм розповіли, що́ Ісус учинив.
But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
Тоді первосвященики та фарисеї скли́кали раду й казали: „Що́ маємо робити, бо Цей Чоловік пребагато чуд чинить?
Якщо так позоставимо Його, то всі в Нього ввірують, — і при́йдуть римля́ни, та й ві́зьмуть нам і край, і наро́д!“
А один із них, Кайя́фа, що був первосвящеником року того́, промовив до них: „Ви нічо́го не знаєте,
і не поміркуєте, що краще для вас, щоб один чоловік прийняв смерть за людей, аніж щоб увесь наро́д мав загинути!“
You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.”
А того не сказав сам від себе, але, первосвящеником бувши в тім році, пророкував, що Ісус за наро́д мав умерти,
He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation.
і не лише за наро́д, але й щоб сполучити в одне́ розпоро́шених Божих дітей.
And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world.
Отож, від того дня вони змо́вилися, щоб убити Його.
So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death.
І тому́ не ходив більш Ісус між юдеями явно, але звідти вдавсь до околиць поближче пустині, до міста, що зветься Єфре́м, — і тут залишався з Своїми учнями.
As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.
Наближалася ж Пасха юдейська, і багато-хто з кра́ю вдались перед Пасхою в Єрусалим, щоб очи́стити себе.
It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began.
І шукали Ісуса вони, а в храмі стоявши, гомоніли один до одно́го: „А як вам здається? Хіба Він не при́йде на свято?“
They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, “What do you think? He won’t come for Passover, will he?”
