    От тоді взяв Ісуса Пилат, та й звелів збичува́ти Його.

    Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified

    Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.

    Вояки́ ж, сплівши з те́рну вінка, Йому покла́ли на голову, та багряни́цю наділи на Нього,

    The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe

    і приступали до Нього й казали: „Раді́й, Ца́рю Юдейський!“ І били по щоках Його.

    and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.

    Тоді вийшов назо́вні ізно́ву Пилат та й говорить до них: „Ось Його я виво́джу назо́вні до вас, щоб ви перекона́лись, що провини нія́кої в Нім не знахо́джу“.

    Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”

    І вийшов назо́вні Ісус, у терно́вім вінку та в багря́нім плащі. А Пилат до них каже: „Оце Чоловік!“

    When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

    Як зобачили ж Його первосвященики й служба, то закричали, говорячи: „Розіпни́, розіпни́!“ Пилат каже до них: „То візьміть Його ви й розіпні́ть, — бо провини я в Нім не знахо́джу!“

    As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”
    But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”

    Відказали юдеї йому: „Ми маємо Зако́на, а за Зако́ном Він мусить умерти, — бо за Божого Сина Себе видавав!“

    The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”

    Як зачув же Пилат оце слово, налякався ще більш,

    When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
  • 9
    і вернувся в прето́рій ізно́ву, і питає Ісуса: „Звідки Ти?“ Та Ісус йому відповіді не подав.

    and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.

    І каже до Нього Пилат: „Не говориш до мене? Хіба ж Ти не знаєш, що маю я вла́ду розп'я́сти Тебе, і маю вла́ду Тебе відпустити?“

    “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

    Ісус відповів: „Надо Мною ти жодної вла́ди не мав би, коли б тобі зве́рху не да́но було́; тому більший гріх має той, хто Мене тобі ви́дав“.

    Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

    Після цього Пилат намагався пустити Його, та юдеї кричали, говорячи: „Якщо Його пустиш, то не ке́сарів при́ятель ти! Усякий, хто себе за царя видає, противиться ке́сареві“.

    From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”

    Як зачув же Пилат оце слово, то вивів назо́вні Ісуса, і засів на судде́ве сиді́ння, на місці, що зветься літострото́н, по-гебрейському ж гавва́та.

    When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).

    Був то ж день Пригото́влення Пасхи, година була — близько шостої. І він каже юдеям: „Ось ваш Цар!“

    It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon.
    “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.

    Та вони закричали: „Геть, геть із Ним! Розіпни́ Його!“ Пилат каже до них: „Царя вашого маю розп'я́сти?“ Первосвященики відповіли: „Ми не маєм царя, окрім ке́саря!“

    But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”
    “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.
    “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

    Ось тоді він їм видав Його, щоб розп'я́сти.

    Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.The Crucifixion of Jesus
    So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

    І, нісши Свого хреста, Він вийшов на місце, Черепо́вищем зване, по-гебрейському Голго́фа.

    Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).

    Там Його розп'яли́, а з Ним ра́зом двох інших, з одно́го та з другого боку, а Ісуса всере́дині.

    There they crucified him, and with him two others — one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

    А Пилат написав і на́писа, та й умістив на хресті. Було ж там написано: „Ісус Назаряни́н, Цар Юдейський“.

    Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews.

    І багато з юдеїв читали цього написа, бо те місце, де Ісус був розп'я́тий, було близько від міста. А було по-гебрейському, по-грецькому й по-римському написано.

    Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.

    Тож сказали Пилатові юдейські первосвященики: „Не пиши: Цар Юдейський, але що Він Сам говорив: Я — Цар Юдейський.

    The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”

    Пилат відповів: „Що я написав — написав!“

    Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

    Розп'я́вши ж Ісуса, вояки́ взяли одіж Його, та й поділили на чотири частині, по частині для кожного вояка́, теж і хіто́на. А хіто́н був не шитий, а ви́тканий ці́лий відве́рху.

    When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

    Тож сказали один до одно́го: „Не будемо дерти його, але же́реба киньмо на нього, — кому припаде́“. Щоб збуло́ся Писа́ння: „Поділили одежу Мою між собою, і метну́ли про шату Мою жеребка́“. Вояки ж це й зробили.

    “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”
    This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said,
    “They divided my clothes among them
    and cast lots for my garment.”a
    So this is what the soldiers did.

    Під хрестом же Ісуса стояли — Його мати, і сестра Його матері, Марія Клео́пова, і Марія Магдали́на.

    Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

    Як побачив Ісус матір та учня, що стояв тут, якого любив, то каже до матері: „Оце, жоно, твій син!“

    When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,b here is your son,”

    Потім каже до учня: „Оце мати твоя!“ І з тієї години той учень узяв її до себе.

    and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

    Потім, знавши Ісус, що вже все довершилось, щоб збулося Писа́ння, проказує: „Пра́гну!“

    The Death of Jesus

    Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”

    Тут стояла посу́дина, повна оцту. Вояки ж, губку оцтом напо́внивши, і на трости́ну її настромивши, підне́сли до уст Його.

    A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.

    А коли Ісус оцту прийняв, то промовив: „Звершилось!“ І, голову схиливши, віддав Свого духа.

    When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

    Був же день Приго́товлення, тож юдеї, щоб тіла́ на хресті не зосталися в суботу, — був бо Великдень тієї суботи — просили Пилата зламати голі́нки розп'я́тим, і зняти.

    Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.

    Тож прийшли вояки́ й поламали голі́нки першому й другому, що розп'я́тий з Ним був.

    The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.

    Коли ж підійшли до Ісуса й побачили, що Він уже вмер, то голі́нок Йому не зламали,

    But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.

    та один з воякі́в списом бо́ка Йому проколов, — і зараз витекла звідти кров та вода.

    Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.

    І самовидець засвідчив, і правдиве свідо́цтво його; і він знає, що правду говорить, щоб повірили й ви.

    The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.

    Бо це сталось тому́, щоб збулося Писа́ння: „Йому кості ламати не бу́дуть!“

    These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”c

    І знов друге Писа́ння говорить: „Дивитися будуть на Того, Кого́ проколо́ли“.

    and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”d

    Потім Йо́сип із Арімате́ї, що був учень Ісуса, але потайни́й, — бо боявся юдеїв, — став просити Пилата, щоб тіло Ісусове взяти. І дозволив Пилат. Тож прийшов він, і взяв тіло Ісусове.

    The Burial of Jesus

    Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.

    Прибув також і Никоди́м, — що давніше прихо́див вночі до Ісуса, — і сми́рну приніс, із ало́єм помішану, щось літрів із сто.

    He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.e

    Отож, узяли вони тіло Ісусове, та й обгорнули його у полотно́ із па́хощами, як є зви́чай ховати в юдеїв.

    Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.

    На тім місці, де Він був розп'я́тий, знахо́дився сад, а в саду́ новий гріб, що в ньому ніко́ли ніхто не лежав.

    At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.

    Тож отут, — з-за юдейського дня Пригото́влення — вони покла́ли Ісуса, бо побли́зу був гріб.

    Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
