    Paul’s Ministry in Thessalonica

    You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you was not without results.

    Та хоч ми нате́рпілися перед тим, і дізнали зневаги в Фили́пах, як знаєте, проте ми відва́жилися в нашім Бозі звіщати вам Божу Єва́нгелію з великою боротьбою.

    We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition.

    Бо покли́кання наше було не з обмани, ані з нечи́стости, ані від лука́вства,
  • 3
    For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you.

    але, як Бог визнав нас гідними, щоб нам доручити Єва́нгелію, ми говоримо так, не лю́дям дого́джуючи, але Богові, що випробо́вує наші серця.

    On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.

    Ми сло́ва підле́сливого не вживали ніко́ли, як знаєте, і не винні в заже́рливості. Бог свідок тому́!

    You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed — God is our witness.

    Не шукаємо ми слави в людей, ані в вас, ані в інших.

    We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority.

    Хоч могли ми поту́жними бути, як Христові апо́столи, але ми серед вас були тихі, немов годува́льниця та, яка доглядає дітей своїх.

    Instead, we were like young childrena among you.
    Just as a nursing mother cares for her children,

    Так бувши ласка́ві до вас, хотіли ми вам передати не тільки Божу Єва́нгелію, але й ду́ші свої, бо були́ ви улю́блені нам.

    so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.

    Бо ви пам'ятаєте, браття, наше стру́днення й уто́му: день і ніч ми робили, щоб жодного з вас не обтя́жити, і проповідували вам Божу Єва́нгелію.

    Surely you remember, brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you.

    Ви свідки та Бог, як свято, і праведно, і бездога́нно пово́дилися ми між вами, віруючими!

    You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed.

    Бож знаєте ви, як кожного з вас, немов ба́тько дітей своїх власних,

    For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,
  • 12
    просили ми вас, і намо́влювали та показували, щоб ви гідно пово́дилися перед Богом, що покликав вас у Своє Царство та в славу.

    encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.

    Тому́ то й ми дякуємо Богові безпереста́нку, що, прийнявши почуте від нас Сло́во Боже, прийняли́ ви не як слово лю́дське, але — як правдиво то є — Слово Боже, що й діє в вас, віруючих.

    And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.

    Бо стали ви, бра́ття, наслідувачами Церквам Божим, що в Юдеї в Христі Ісусі, бо те саме і ви були ви́терпіли від своїх землякі́в, як і ті від юдеїв,

    For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God’s churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews

    що вбили вони й Господа Ісуса, і пророків Його, і вигнали нас, і Богові не догоджа́ють, і супротивні всім лю́дям.

    who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone
  • 16
    Вони забороняють нам говорити поганам, щоб спаслися, щоб тим доповня́ти їм за́вжди провини свої. Але Божий гнів їх спіткає вкінці!

    in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last.b

    А ми, браття, на короткий часо́к розлучившися з вами лицем, а не серцем, тим із більшим бажа́нням силкува́лись побачити ваше лице.

    Paul’s Longing to See the Thessalonians

    But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.

    Тим то до вас ми хотіли прийти, я, Павло, раз і двічі, але сатана́ перешкодив був нам.

    For we wanted to come to you — certainly I, Paul, did, again and again — but Satan blocked our way.

    Бо хто нам надія, чи радість, чи вінок похвали́? Хіба ж то й не ви перед Господом нашим Ісусом в Його прихо́ді?

    For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?

    Бо ви наша слава та радість!

    Indeed, you are our glory and joy.
