Judah and Simeon Conquer the Land
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, “Which tribe should go first to attack the Canaanites?”

І сказав Господь: „Юда пі́де. Оце Я дав Край у його руку“.
The LORD answered, “Judah, for I have given them victory over the land.”
І сказав Юда до Симеона, свого брата: „Іди зо мною на мій жеребо́к, і бу́демо воювати з ханаанеянином, то піду́ й я з тобою на твій жеребо́к“. І пішов із ним Симео́н.
The men of Judah said to their relatives from the tribe of Simeon, “Join with us to fight against the Canaanites living in the territory allotted to us. Then we will help you conquer your territory.” So the men of Simeon went with Judah.
І піднявся Юда, а Господь дав ханаанеянина та періззеянина в їхню руку. І вони побили їх у Безеку, — десять тисяч чоловіка.
When the men of Judah attacked, the LORD gave them victory over the Canaanites and Perizzites, and they killed 10,000 enemy warriors at the town of Bezek.
І знайшли вони в Безеку Адоні-Безека, і воювали з ним, і побили ханаане́янина та періззе́янина.
While at Bezek they encountered King Adoni-bezek and fought against him, and the Canaanites and Perizzites were defeated.
І втікав Адоні-Безек, а вони гналися за ним, і злови́ли його, і повідру́бували великі пальці його рук та його ніг.
Adoni-bezek escaped, but the Israelites soon captured him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
І сказав Адоні-Безек: „Сімдеся́т царів з відру́баними великими пальцями їхніх рук та їхніх ніг часто збирали поживу під столом моїм. Як робив я, так відплатив мені Бог!“
Adoni-bezek said, “I once had seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off, eating scraps from under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” They took him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
І воювали Юдині сини з Єрусалимом, і здобули́ його, і побили його ві́стрям меча́, а місто пустили з огнем.
The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem and captured it, killing all its people and setting the city on fire.
А потому Юдині сини зійшли воювати з ханаане́янином, ме́шканцем гори, і Неґеву, і Шефелі.
І пішов Юда до ханаанеянина, що сидить у Хевроні, — а ім'я́ Хеврону було колись: Кір'ят-Арба, — і побили Шешая, й Ахімана та Талмая.
Judah marched against the Canaanites in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath-arba), defeating the forces of Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
А звідти пішов він до мешканців Девіру, а ім'я́ Девіру колись: Кір'ят-Сефер.
From there they went to fight against the people living in the town of Debir (formerly called Kiriath-sepher).
І сказав Калев: „Хто поб'є Кір'ят-Сефер та здобуде його, то дам йому Ахсу, дочку мою, за жінку“.
Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage to the one who attacks and captures Kiriath-sepher.”
І здобув його Отніїл, син Кенезів, брат Калевів, молодший від нього. І він дав йому свою дочку́ Ахсу за жінку.
Othniel, the son of Caleb’s younger brother, Kenaz, was the one who conquered it, so Acsah became Othniel’s wife.
І сталося, коли вона прийшла, то намовила його жадати по́ля від її батька. І зійшла вона з осла, а Калев сказав їй: „Що тобі?“
І вона сказала йому: „Дай мені дара благословення! Бо ти дав мені землю суху, то дай мені водні джере́ла“. І Калев дав їй Ґуллот-горі́шній та Ґуллот-до́лішній.
She said, “Let me have another gift. You have already given me land in the Negev; now please give me springs of water, too.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.
А сини Кенея, Мойсеєвого тестя, пішли з міста Пальм з Юдиними синами до Юдиної пустині, що на півдні Араду. І пішов він, і осівся з народом.
When the tribe of Judah left Jericho — the city of palms — the Kenites, who were descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, traveled with them into the wilderness of Judah. They settled among the people there, near the town of Arad in the Negev.
І пішов Юда з Симеоном, своїм братом, та й побили ханаанеянина, ме́шканця Цефату, і вчинили його закляттям. І назвав ім'я́ того міста: Хорма.
І здобув Юда Аззу та границю її, й Ашкелон та границю його, і Екрон та границю його.
In addition, Judah captured the towns of Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ekron, along with their surrounding territories.
І був Господь з Юдою, і він повиганяв мешканців гори. Та не міг він повиганяти ме́шканців долини, бо вони мали залізні колесни́ці.
Israel Fails to Conquer the Land
The LORD was with the people of Judah, and they took possession of the hill country. But they failed to drive out the people living in the plains, who had iron chariots.
І дали Калевові Хевро́н, як говорив був Мойсей, і він вигнав звідти трьох ве́летнів.
The town of Hebron was given to Caleb as Moses had promised. And Caleb drove out the people living there, who were descendants of the three sons of Anak.
А євусеянина, ме́шканця Єрусалиму, не вигнали Веніяминові сини, — і осів євусеянин із Веніяминовими синами в Єрусалимі, і сидя́ть тут аж до цього дня.
The tribe of Benjamin, however, failed to drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live in Jerusalem among the people of Benjamin.
І пішов також дім Йо́сипів до Бет-Елу, а Господь був з ними.
The descendants of Joseph attacked the town of Bethel, and the LORD was with them.
І ви́відав Йо́сипів дім у Бет-Елі, а ім'я́ того міста колись було Луз.
They sent men to scout out Bethel (formerly known as Luz).
І побачили сторожі́ чоловіка, що виходив із того міста, та й сказали до нього: „Покажи нам вхід до міста, а ми вчинимо тобі ми́лість!“
They confronted a man coming out of the town and said to him, “Show us a way into the town, and we will have mercy on you.”
І він показав їм вхід до міста, і вони побили те місто ві́стрям меча, а того чоловіка та ввесь його рід відпустили.
So he showed them a way in, and they killed everyone in the town except that man and his family.
І пішов той чоловік до кра́ю хітте́ян, і збудував місто, та й назвав ім'я́ йому: Луз, — воно ім'я́ його аж до цього дня.
Later the man moved to the land of the Hittites, where he built a town. He named it Luz, which is its name to this day.
А Манасія не повиганяв мешканців Бет-Шеану та його залежних міст, і Таанаху та його залежних міст, і ме́шканців Дору та його залежних міст, і ме́шканців Ївлеаму та його залежних міст, і мешканців Міґіддо та його залежних міст, — і ханаане́янин волів сидіти в тому кра́ї.
І сталося, коли Ізраїль зміцни́вся, то він наклав на ханаанеянина дани́ну, але вигнати — не вигнав його.
When the Israelites grew stronger, they forced the Canaanites to work as slaves, but they never did drive them completely out of the land.
І Єфрем не вигнав ханаане́янина, що мешкає в Ґезері, — і осівся ханаанеянин серед нього в Ґезері.
The tribe of Ephraim failed to drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, so the Canaanites continued to live there among them.
Завуло́н не повиганяв ме́шканців Кітрону та мешканців Нагалолу, — і осівся ханаане́янин серед нього, і став за дани́ну.
The tribe of Zebulun failed to drive out the residents of Kitron and Nahalol, so the Canaanites continued to live among them. But the Canaanites were forced to work as slaves for the people of Zebulun.
Аси́р не повиганяв ме́шканців Акко, і ме́шканців Сидону, і Ахлаву, і Ахзіву, і Хелби, і Афіку, і Рехову.
The tribe of Asher failed to drive out the residents of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Aczib, Helbah, Aphik, and Rehob.
І осівся аси́рець серед ханаане́янина, мешканця того кра́ю, бо він не вигнав його.
Instead, the people of Asher moved in among the Canaanites, who controlled the land, for they failed to drive them out.
Нефтали́м не повиганяв ме́шканців Бет-Шемешу, і мешканців Бет-Анату, — і він осівся серед ханаанеянина, мешканця того краю, а мешканці Бет-Шемешу та Бет-Анату стали їм за данину.
Likewise, the tribe of Naphtali failed to drive out the residents of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath. Instead, they moved in among the Canaanites, who controlled the land. Nevertheless, the people of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were forced to work as slaves for the people of Naphtali.
І тиснув аморе́янин Данових синів на го́ру, бо не давав йому схо́дити на долину.
As for the tribe of Dan, the Amorites forced them back into the hill country and would not let them come down into the plains.
І волів амореянин сидіти на горі Херес в Айялоні та в Шаалевімі, та стала сильною рука Йо́сипового дому, — він став за данину.
The Amorites were determined to stay in Mount Heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim, but when the descendants of Joseph became stronger, they forced the Amorites to work as slaves.
