І втік Давид з Найо́ту в Рамі́, і прийшов та й сказав перед Йонатаном: „Що́ я зробив, яка провина моя й який мій гріх перед батьком твоїм, що він шукає моєї душі?“
Jonathan’s Loyalty to David
Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and went and said to Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity, and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”

А той відказав: „Борони Боже, — ти не помреш! Таж ба́тько мій не робить жодної справи, великої чи справи малої, коли не відкриває на вухо мені, то чому мій батько заховає від мене цю справу? Цього не бу́де!“
So Jonathan said to him, “By no means! You shall not die! Indeed, my father will do nothing either great or small without first telling me. And why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so!”
А Давид іще присягнув та й сказав: „Добре пізнав твій батько, що я знайшов милість в оча́х твоїх. І сказав він: Нехай не довідається про те Йонатан, щоб не був він засму́чений. Але як живий Господь і як жива душа твоя, — між мною та смертю не більше кро́ку!“
Then David took an oath again, and said, “Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”
І сказав Йонатан до Давида: „Що́ підкаже душа твоя, те зроблю́ тобі!“
So Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you yourself desire, I will do it for you.”
І сказав Давид до Йонатана: „Ось узавтра новомі́сяччя, коли звичайно сиджу́ я з царем, щоб їсти з ним. Але ти відпусти мене, а я сховаюся в полі аж до третього вечора.
And David said to Jonathan, “Indeed tomorrow is the New Moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king to eat. But let me go, that I may hide in the field until the third day at evening.
Якщо дійсно згадає про мене твій батько, то скажеш, що конче жадав від мене Давид, щоб йому забігти до свого міста Віфлеєму, бо там річна́ жертва для всього роду його.
If your father misses me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked permission of me that he might run over to Bethlehem, his city, for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.’
Якщо він скаже так: „Добре!“ то мир твоєму рабові. А якщо дійсно запалає йому гнів, то знай, що постано́влене те зло від нього.
If he says thus: ‘It is well,’ your servant will be safe. But if he is very angry, be sure that evil is determined by him.
І зробиш милість своє́му рабові, бо ти ввів свого раба в Господній запові́т із собою. А якщо є на мені прови́на, — убий мене ти, а до батька твого по́що мене ве́сти?“
Therefore you shall deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the Lord with you. Nevertheless, if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?”
І відказав Йонатан: „Борони тебе, Боже! Бо якщо справді пізна́ю, що в мого батька постановлене зло, щоб прийшло на тебе, чи ж того я не розкажу́ тобі?“
But Jonathan said, “Far be it from you! For if I knew certainly that evil was determined by my father to come upon you, then would I not tell you?”
І сказав Давид до Йонатана: „Хто повідо́мить мене, якщо батько твій відповість тобі жорсто́ке?“
Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me, or what if your father answers you roughly?”
А Йонатан сказав до Давида: „Ходи ж, і ви́йдемо на поле“. І вийшли вони оби́два на поле.
And Jonathan said to David, “Come, let us go out into the field.” So both of them went out into the field.
І сказав Йоната́н до Давида: „Свідок Господь, Бог Ізраїлів, що післязавтра цього ча́су ви́відаю я батька свого. Нехай скарає мене Бог, якщо тоді не пошлю́ до тебе, і не сповіщу́ тебе, —
так нехай зробить Госпо́дь Йонатану, і так нехай додасть! А якщо моєму ба́тькові вгодно зробити зло тобі, то сповіщу́ тебе, і відішлю́ тебе, і ти пі́деш у мирі, а Господь буде з тобою, як Він був із моїм ба́тьком.
may the Lord do so and much more to Jonathan. But if it pleases my father to do you evil, then I will report it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. And the Lord be with you as He has been with my father.
І ти, якщо я бу́ду ще живий, хіба не зро́биш зо мною Господньої ми́лости? Коли ж я помру́,
And you shall not only show me the kindness of the Lord while I still live, that I may not die;
то не відбирай своєї ми́лости від дому мого навіки, а навіть тоді, як Господь понищить усіх Давидових ворогів із поверхні землі.
І нехай пошукає Господь душі́ від Давидових ворогів!“ І склав Йонатан умову з Давидовим домом.
І Йонатан далі присягався Давидові в своїй любові до нього, бо він покохав його, як свою душу.
Now Jonathan again caused David to vow, because he loved him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
І сказав йому Йонатан: „Узавтра новомісяччя, і ти будеш зга́даний, бо буде порожнє твоє місце.
Then Jonathan said to David, “Tomorrow is the New Moon; and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.
А третього дня скоро зі́йдеш, і при́йдеш до місця, де ти ховався у день твого чину, і сядеш при камені Азе́л.
And when you have stayed three days, go down quickly and come to the place where you hid on the day of the deed; and remain by the stone Ezel.
А я пущу́ три стрілі́ набік, ніби стріляючи собі до мети.
Then I will shoot three arrows to the side, as though I shot at a target;
І ось пошлю́ я слугу: „Іди, знайди ті стрі́ли!“ Якщо, говорячи, скажу́ я до хлопця: „Он ті стрі́ли тут перед тобою, візьми їх“, то прихо́дь, бо мир тобі, і нема нічого злого, як живий Господь!“
and there I will send a lad, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I expressly say to the lad, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; get them and come’ — then, as the Lord lives, there is safety for you and no harm.
А якщо я скажу́ до того юнака́ так: „Он ті стріли за тобою далі“, то втікай, бо Господь відпускає тебе.
But if I say thus to the young man, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you’ — go your way, for the Lord has sent you away.
А та річ, що про неї говорили ми, я та ти, — ось Господь буде свідком між мною та між тобою аж навіки!“
And as for the matter which you and I have spoken of, indeed the Lord be between you and me forever.”
І сховався Давид у полі. І було новомі́сяччя, а цар засів до ї́жі.
Then David hid in the field. And when the New Moon had come, the king sat down to eat the feast.
І сів цар на стільці́ своїм, як раз-у-раз, на стільці́ при стіні. І встав Йонатан, а Авне́р сів збо́ку Саула, а Давидове місце було порожнє.
Та Саул нічого не говорив того дня, бо сказав собі: „Це випа́док, Давид не чистий, бо не очистився“.
Nevertheless Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought, “Something has happened to him; he is unclean, surely he is unclean.”
І сталося другого дня, на другий день новомісяччя, — було́ порожнє Давидове місце. І сказав Саул до сина свого Йонатана: „Чому́ не прийшов на хліб Єссеїв син і вчора, і сьогодні?“
And it happened the next day, the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why has the son of Jesse not come to eat, either yesterday or today?”
І відповів Йонатан Саулові: „Дійсно просився Давид у мене до Віфлеєму.
So Jonathan answered Saul, “David earnestly asked permission of me to go to Bethlehem.
І він говорив: Пусти мене, бо в тому місті для нас родова́ жертва, і запросив мене брат мій. А тепер, якщо знайшов я милість в оча́х твоїх, нехай я побіжу́ та побачу братів моїх. Тому́ не прийшов він до царсько́го столу“.
And he said, ‘Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. And now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me get away and see my brothers.’ Therefore he has not come to the king’s table.”
І запалав Саулів гнів на Йонатана, і він сказав йому: „Негідний і неслухня́ний си́ну! Чи ж не знаю я, що ти вибрав Єссеєвого сина на свій сором та на сором і неславу своєї матері?
Then Saul’s anger was aroused against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness?
Бо всі дні, поки Єссеїв син живий на землі, не будеш міцно стояти ані ти, ані царство твоє. А тепер пошли, і приведи́ його до мене, бо він призначений на смерть“.
І відповів Йонатан своєму батькові Саулові та й сказав йому: „Чому́ він буде забитий? Що́ він зробив?“
And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, “Why should he be killed? What has he done?”
Тоді Саул кинув списа на нього, щоб убити його. І пізнав Йонатан, що то постановлене від батька, щоб убити Давида.
І встав Йонатан від сто́лу, розпалений гнівом, і не їв хліба і дру́гого дня новомісяччя, бо був засмучений за Давида, бо його обра́зив його батько.
So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had treated him shamefully.
І сталося вранці, і вийшов Йонатан на поле, на умо́влений з Давидом час, а з ним був мали́й хлопець.
And so it was, in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad was with him.
І сказав він до хлопця свого: „Побіжи, знайди ті стріли, що я ви́стріляю“. Хлопець побіг, а він пустив стрілу́ поза нього.
Then he said to his lad, “Now run, find the arrows which I shoot.” As the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
І прийшов хлопець до місця стріли́, що пустив Йонатан, а Йонатан кликнув за хлопцем і сказав: „Он та стріла за тобою далі!“
When the lad had come to the place where the arrow was which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried out after the lad and said, “Is not the arrow beyond you?”
І кликнув Йонатан за хлопцем: „Скоро, поспіши, не ставай!“ І зібрав Йонатанів хлопець стрі́ли, та й прийшов до свого пана.
And Jonathan cried out after the lad, “Make haste, hurry, do not delay!” So Jonathan’s lad gathered up the arrows and came back to his master.
А той хлопець нічого не знав, — тільки Йонатан та Давид знали ту справу.
But the lad did not know anything. Only Jonathan and David knew of the matter.
І віддав Йоната́н свою зброю юнако́ві, якого мав, та й сказав йому: „Іди, занеси це до міста!“
Той юна́к пішов, а Давид устав із південного бо́ку, і впав на обличчя своє на землю, та й поклонився три рази. І поцілували вони один о́дного, і оплакували один о́дного, а Давид гірко плакав.
As soon as the lad had gone, David arose from a place toward the south, fell on his face to the ground, and bowed down three times. And they kissed one another; and they wept together, but David more so.
І сказав Йонатан до Давида: „Іди з миром! А що присягнули ми двоє в Господнє Ім'я́, говорячи: Господь нехай буде свідком між мною та між тобою, і між насінням моїм та насінням твоїм, — нехай буде аж навіки!“
Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, since we have both sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘May the Lord be between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants, forever.’ ” So he arose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.
