Now it happened, when David and his men came to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire,

І позабирали вони до неволі жіно́к, що були в ньому, від мало́го аж до великого, нікого не забили, але забрали, та й пішли своєю дорогою.
and had taken captive the women and those who were there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carried them away and went their way.
І прийшов Давид та його люди до того міста, а воно спа́лене огнем! А їхні жінки, та сини їхні, та їхні до́чки — забрані в неволю.
So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive.
І підніс Давид та народ, що з ним, свій голос, та й плакали, аж поки не стало їм сили плакати.
Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep.
І були взяті до неволі оби́дві Давидові жінки́: їзреелі́тка Ахіноам та Авіґаїл, коли́шня жінка кармелітянина Навала.
And David’s two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had been taken captive.
І було Давидові дуже гірко, бо народ говорив, щоб його вкаменувати, бо засмутилася душа всього народу, — кожен обурився за синів своїх та за дочо́к своїх. Та Давид зміцни́вся Господом, Богом, своїм.
І сказав Давид до священика Евіятара, Ахімеле́хового сина: „Принеси до мене ефо́да!“ І Евіята́р приніс ефода до Давида.
Then David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, “Please bring the ephod here to me.” And Abiathar brought the ephod to David.
І запитав Давид Господа, говорячи: „Чи мені гнатися за тією ордою, чи дожену́ її?“ А Він відказав йому́: „Женися, бо конче дожене́ш, і конче ви́зволиш“.
So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?”
And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.”

І пішов Давид, він та шість сотень люда, що з ним, і вони прийшли аж до потоку Бесор; а відсталі спинилися.
So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the Brook Besor, where those stayed who were left behind.
І гнався Давид, він та чотири сотні чоловіка. А двісті люда спини́лися, бо були слабі, щоб перейти потока Бесор.
But David pursued, he and four hundred men; for two hundred stayed behind, who were so weary that they could not cross the Brook Besor.
І знайшли вони в полі єги́птянина, і привели́ його до Давида, і дали йому хліба, а він їв, і напоїли його водою.
Then they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David; and they gave him bread and he ate, and they let him drink water.
І дали́ йому половину грудки сушених фіґ та дві в'язки родзи́нок. І він з'їв, і вернувся дух його до нього, бо він не їв хліба та не пив води три дні та три ночі.
And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins. So when he had eaten, his strength came back to him; for he had eaten no bread nor drunk water for three days and three nights.
І запитав його Давид: „Чий ти та звідкіля́ ти?“ А той відказав: „Я єгипетський юнак, раб амаликитянина. Та покинув мене пан мій, бо я захворі́в три дні тому.
Then David said to him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?”
And he said, “I am a young man from Egypt, servant of an Amalekite; and my master left me behind, because three days ago I fell sick.

We made an invasion of the southern area of the Cherethites, in the territory which belongs to Judah, and of the southern area of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.”
I сказав йому Давид: „Чи не заведеш мене до тієї орди?“ А той відповів: „Присягни мені Богом, що не вб'єш мене, і що не ви́даси мене в руку мого пана, то спрова́джу тебе до тієї орди“.
And David said to him, “Can you take me down to this troop?”
So he said, “Swear to me by God that you will neither kill me nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will take you down to this troop.”

І він спрова́див його, аж ось — вони розпоро́шені по пове́рхні всієї тієї землі, їдять та п'ють та святкують з при́воду всієї тієї великої здо́бичі, що вони набрали з филистимського кра́ю та з Кра́ю Юдиного.
And when he had brought him down, there they were, spread out over all the land, eating and drinking and dancing, because of all the great spoil which they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.
І бив їх Давид від ранку аж до вечора насту́пного дня, і не втік із них ніхто, крім чотирьохсот чоловіка хлопців, що повсіда́ли на верблю́дів, і повтіка́ли.
Then David attacked them from twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled.
І врятував Давид усе, що позабирав був Амалик. І оби́дві свої жі́нки Давид урятував.
So David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away, and David rescued his two wives.
І не пропало їм нічого: усе, від мало́го й аж до великого, і аж до синів та дочо́к, і від здо́бичі, і аж до всьо́го, що ті взяли були собі, — усе вернув Давид!
And nothing of theirs was lacking, either small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything which they had taken from them; David recovered all.
І взяв Давид усю худобу дрібну́ та худобу велику, а ті, що йшли перед тією чередою, говорили: „Це Давидова здо́бич!“
Then David took all the flocks and herds they had driven before those other livestock, and said, “This is David’s spoil.”
Пото́му прийшов Давид до тих двохсот людей, що були слабі́, щоб іти за Давидом, і що їх він лишив був при потоці Бесо́р, а вони повихо́дили назу́стріч Давидові та назустріч народові, що з ним. І підійшов Давид до народу, і запитався їх про мир.
І стали говорити всі люди злі та негідні з тих людей, що ходи́ли з Давидом, та й сказали: „Вони не ходили з нами, тому не дамо їм зо здо́бичі, що ми відняли, бо кожному дамо тільки жінок його та синів його, нехай відведуть, і нехай ідуть!“
А Давид сказав: „Не робіть так, браття мої, з тим, що дав нам Госпо́дь, і пильнував нас, і дав орду́, що йшла на нас, у нашу руку.
But David said, “My brethren, you shall not do so with what the Lord has given us, who has preserved us and delivered into our hand the troop that came against us.
А хто послухає вас у такій речі? Бо яка частина того, хто ходив до бо́ю, то така частина й того, хто сидів при ре́чах, — рівно поділять“.
For who will heed you in this matter? But as his part is who goes down to the battle, so shall his part be who stays by the supplies; they shall share alike.”
І сталося від цього дня й далі, і зробив він це за постанову та за зви́чай для Ізраїля, і він існу́є аж до цього дня.
So it was, from that day forward; he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day.
І прийшов Давид до Цікла́ґу, і послав зо здо́бичі Юдиним старши́м, при́ятелям своїм, говорячи: „Оце вам подарок зо здо́бичі Господніх ворогі́в“, —
тим, що в Бет-Елі, і тим, що в Рамо́ті півде́ннім, і тим, що в Яттері,
to those who were in Bethel, those who were in Ramoth of the South, those who were in Jattir,
і тим, що в Ароері, і тим, що в Сіфмоті, і тим, що в Ештемоа,
those who were in Aroer, those who were in Siphmoth, those who were in Eshtemoa,
і тим, що в Рахалі, і тим, що в міста́х Єрахмелеянина, і тим, що в містах Кене́янина,
those who were in Rachal, those who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, those who were in the cities of the Kenites,
і тим, що в Хормі, і тим, що в Бор-Ашані, і тим, що в Атаху,
