Israel Demands a King
And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

І було ім'я́ перворі́дного сина його Йоїл, а ім'я́ другого його — Авійя, судді в Беер-Шеві.
Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.
А сини його не йшли його дорогою, — і вхиля́лись до зи́ску, і брали пі́дкупа, і ламали Зако́на.
And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
І зібралися всі Ізраїлеві старші́, і прийшли до Самуїла до Рами́,
Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
та й сказали до нього: „Ось ти поста́рівся, а сини твої не йдуть доро́гами твоїми. Тепер настанови́ нам царя́, щоб судив нас, як у всіх наро́дів“.
And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
І була та річ зла в Самуїлових оча́х, як вони сказали: „Настанови́ нам царя́, щоб судив нас“. І молився Самуїл до Господа.
But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
І сказав Господь до Самуїла: „Послухай голосу того наро́ду щодо всього, про що́ він сказав тобі, бо не тобою вони пого́рдували, але Мною пого́рдували, щоб Я не царюва́в над ними.
And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
Як усі ті діла́, що вони чинили від дня, коли Я вивів їх з Єгипту, і́ аж до цього дня, і як вони ки́дали Мене й служили іншим бога́м, так вони чинять і тобі.
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
А тепер послухай їхнього голосу, тільки конче остереже́ш їх, і розповіси їм пра́во того царя, що буде царюва́ти над ними“.
Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
І переказав Самуїл всі Господні слова́ до наро́ду, що жадав від нього царя,
Samuel's Warning About Kings
And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.

і сказав: „Оце буде пра́во царя, що царюва́тиме над вами: він ві́зьме синів ваших і поставить собі в колесни́ці свої та серед їздців своїх, і вони бу́дуть бігати перед колесни́цею його́;
And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.
і щоб поставити собі тисячників та п'ятдесятників, і щоб орати о́рку його, і щоб жати жни́во його, і щоб робити збро́ю військо́ву його та колесни́чні прила́ддя його.
And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
А дочо́к ваших забере за мирова́рниць, і за куха́рок, і за пе́карок.
And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
І він позабирає поля ваші, і виноградники ваші, та кращі ваші оли́вки, — і пороздає своїм слу́гам.
And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
А з вашого по́сіву та з ваших виноградників братиме десятину, і даватиме своїм е́внухам та своїм слу́гам.
And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
І він забере рабів ваших, і ваших невільниць, і найліпших ваших юнакі́в, і ваших ослів, — і буде вживати їх на роботу свою.
And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
Він братиме десятину з вашої ота́ри, а ви станете йому за рабів.
He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
І ви будете кли́кати того дня проти вашого царя́, якого собі ви́брали, — та не відпові́сть вам Господь того дня!“
And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
Та наро́д відмо́вився слухати Самуїлового голосу, та й сказав: „Ні, — нехай тільки цар буде над нами!
God Grants the Request
Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

І бу́демо ми, як усі люди, і буде нас судити наш цар. І він ходи́тиме перед нами, і прова́дитиме наші ві́йни“.
That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
І вислухав Самуїл усі слова́ наро́ду, і переказав їх го́лосно Господе́ві.
And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.
