When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.

Сівши на землю, Він почав навчати людей, та учні теж оточили Його:
He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,
«Благословенні вбогі духом,[8] бо Царство Боже належить їм.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Благословенні засмучені, бо Бог утішить їх.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Благословенні смиренні, бо вони успадкують землю, обіцяну Господом.[9]
“Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
Благословенні голодні та спраглі до праведності, бо Бог задовольнить їхню потребу.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Благословенні милосердні, бо вони зазнають милосердя від Бога.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Благословенні чисті серцем, бо вони побачать Бога.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Благословенні миротворці, бо вони будуть названі дітьми Божими.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Благословенні переслідувані за праведність, бо їм належить Царство Небесне.
“Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Благословенні ви, коли вас скривджують і переслідують і облудно зводять наклепи на вас тому, що ви Мої послідовники.
“Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.
Радійте й веселіться, бо на вас чекає велика нагорода на Небесах! Так люди переслідували і всіх пророків, які жили до вас».
“Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
«Ви — сіль землі, але коли сіль стає прісною і втрачає свій смак, як її знову солоною зробити? Вона стає ні на що непридатною. Хіба що викинути її геть, щоб топтали люди.
Disciples and the World
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
Ви — світло світу. Неможливо сховати міста, що стоїть на вершині гори.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;
Ніхто не ставить запаленний світильник під перевернуту посудину, а на поставець, і він тоді світить усім у хаті.
nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Нехай світло ваше сяє людям, щоб вони бачили ваші добрі вчинки і прославляли Отця свого Небесного».
“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
«Не думайте, що Я прийшов знищити вчення Закону Мойсея чи пророків. Я прийшов не знищити його, але виконати.
“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
Істинно кажу вам, що скільки існуватимуть небо і земля, жодна рисочка хоч однієї з літер Закону не зникне, аж доки не здійсниться все.
“For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
Якщо хтось порушить хоча б одну з найменших заповідей і навчить людей цього, той стане найменшим у Царстві Божому. Якщо ж він підкориться й виконуватиме заповіді та вчитиме інших чинити так само, то стане великим у Царстві Небесному.
“Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Кажу вам так, бо якщо ви не переважите законників та фарисеїв у виконанні того, чого вимагає Бог, то не ввійти вам до Царства Небесного».
“For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
«Ви чули, що сказано було нашим предкам: „Не вбивай”. Той, хто вб’є, відповість за це перед судом.
Personal Relationships
“You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’
Але кажу Я вам: якщо хтось гнівається на ближнього свого — відповість перед судом. Якщо ж хто образить ближнього свого — відповість перед Верховним судом.[10] А якщо хто скаже: „Ти дурень” — буде горіти в пекельному вогні.
“But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
Якщо ти несеш дар до вівтаря і там згадаєш, що брат твій має щось проти тебе, залиш дар свій. Перш піди примирися з братом, а тоді повернися й поклади на вівтар дарунок свій.
“Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.
Примирися зі своїм недругом, доки ти з ним ідеш до суду, інакше він віддасть тебе до рук судді, а той — сторожі, щоб кинути тебе до в’язниці.
“Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
Істинно кажу: не вийти тобі звідти, доки не сплатиш усе, що заборгував до останнього грошу».
“Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent.
«Ви чули, що було сказано: „Не чини перелюбу”.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’;
Та кажу Я вам, що кожен, хто дивиться на жінку з пожадливістю, той уже вчинив перелюб з нею у своєму серці.
but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Якщо праве око примушує тебе на гріх, вирви його та кинь геть, бо ліпше позбутися однієї частини тіла, ніж усе тіло кинути до пекла.
“If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
І якщо правиця веде тебе до гріха, одрубай її та кинь геть, бо ліпше позбутися однієї частини тіла, ніж усе тіло загубити у пеклі».
“If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.
«І сказано: „Той, хто бере розлучення з жінкою своєю, має дати їй розводного листа”.
“It was said, ‘WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE’;
Та кажу Я вам, що існує тільки єдина підстава для чоловіка розлучитися зі своєю дружиною: через її розпусту. Той, хто одружується з тією розлученою, сам грішить перелюбом».
but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
«Ви чули також, що було наказано нашим предкам: «Не порушуй клятву, а дотримуйся клятви, даної Господу.[11]
“Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.’
Та кажу Я вам: не кляніться взагалі: ні Небом, бо це — престол Божий,
“But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,
ні Землею, бо це — підніжжя стіп Божих. Також, не кляніться ні Єрусалимом, бо це — місто великого Царя,
or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING.
ні головою своєю, бо не зможете ви зробити жодної волосини ні білою, ані чорною.
“Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.
Якщо ви хочете сказати: „Так” — то й кажіть: „Так”. Якщо ж: „Ні” — то й кажіть: „Ні”. Все, що поза цим — від лукавого».
“But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil.
«Ви чули, що сказано: «Око за око, зуб за зуб».
“You have heard that it was said, ‘AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.’
Та кажу Я вам: „Не чиніть опір злому чоловікові”. Якщо хтось вдарить вас по правій щоці, то підставте йому і ліву.
“But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
Якщо хто схоче судитися з вами й забере вашу сорочку, то віддайте йому й плащ.
“If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also.
Якщо римський солдат примушуватиме [12] вас пройти з ним один кілометр, йдіть з ним два.
“Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two.
Коли хтось у вас просить, то дайте йому, а хто хоче позичити, не відмовляйте».
“Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.
«Ви чули, що сказано: „Люби ближнього свого і ненавидь ворога”.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.’
Та кажу Я вам: „Любіть ворогів своїх, моліться за тих, хто переслідує вас, щоб ви могли стати дітьми вашого Отця Небесного. Він примушує сонце сходити для злих і добрих й посилає дощ на праведних і неправедних.
“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Бо якщо ви любите лише тих, хто любить вас, то яку винагороду ви матимете? Чи не так чинять збирачі податків?
“For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
Якщо ви вітаєте лише братів своїх, то що особливого в цьому? Чи не так чинять погани [13]?
“If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
