Господь послав до Давида пророка Натана. Він увійшов до нього, і сказав йому: В одному місті були два чоловіки: один — багатий, а один — бідний.
Nathan Rebukes David
And Jehovah sent Nathan to David. And he came to him, and said to him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.

а в бідного — нічого, хіба що одна мала овечка, яку він купив, оберігав і вигодував її, і вона виросла разом з ним і з його синами. Вона їла його хліб і пила з його чаші, відпочивала на його грудях і була йому, наче дочка.
but the poor man had nothing at all, but one little ewe lamb which he had bought, and was nourishing; and it grew up with him, and together with his children: it ate of his morsel, and drank of his own cup, and slept in his bosom, and was to him as a daughter.
І прийшов мандрівник до багатого мужа, і він пожалів узяти зі своїх отар і зі своїх стад, щоби приготувати обід чужинцеві-мандрівникові, який до нього прийшов. Тож він узяв овечку бідного й приготував її чоловікові, який прийшов до нього.
And there came a traveller to the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that had come to him; and he took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that had come to him.
Давид дуже розгнівався люттю на чоловіка, і сказав Давид Натанові: Нехай живе Господь! Приречений на смерть чоловік, який це вчинив!
Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As Jehovah liveth, the man that hath done this thing is worthy of death;
За те, що вчинив таку справу, і за те, що не пощадив, він усемеро поверне за овечку!
and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.
І промовив Натан до Давида: Ти той чоловік, який це вчинив! Так говорить Господь, Бог Ізраїля: Я — Той, Хто помазав тебе на царя над Ізраїлем, Я — Той, Хто спас тебе від руки Саула!
And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man! Thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel: I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
Я дав тобі дім твого володаря і жінок твого володаря на твоє лоно, Я дав тобі дім Ізраїля і Юду. Якщо ж цього замало, додам тобі до цього!
and I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if [that] had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.
Як це опоганив ти Господнє слово, щоби вчинити зло в Його очах? Ти мечем убив Урію, хета, і за жінку ти взяв собі його жінку, — ти його вбив мечем синів Аммона!
Wherefore hast thou despised the word of Jehovah to do evil in his sight? thou hast smitten Urijah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.
Тепер меч не відступить від твого дому навіки за те, що ти Мене зневажив і взяв жінку Урії, хета, щоби була тобі за жінку!
Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Urijah the Hittite to be thy wife.
Так говорить Господь: Ось Я наводжу на тебе зло з твого дому, і заберу твоїх жінок перед твоїми очима, і дам твоєму ближньому, і переспить з твоїми жінками під цим сонцем!
Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
Тому що ти потай учинив, то Я вчиню це слово перед усім Ізраїлем і під цим сонцем.
For thou didst [it] secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.
І сказав Давид Натанові: Я згрішив перед Господом! І промовив Натан до Давида: Господь відняв твій гріх, тому не помреш.
David's Loss and Repentance
And David said to Nathan, I have sinned against Jehovah. And Nathan said to David, Jehovah has also put away thy sin: thou shalt not die.

Але тому, що цим вчинком ти справді підбурив [1] Господніх ворогів, то твій син, який народився в тебе, неодмінно помре [2]!
Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of Jehovah to blaspheme, even the child that is born to thee shall certainly die.
І Натан пішов до свого дому.
А Господь уразив дитину, яку жінка Урії народила Давидові, і вона захворіла.

And Nathan departed to his house. And Jehovah smote the child that Urijah's wife bore to David, and it became very sick.
І Давид допитувався Бога про дитину, і постив Давид постом, увійшов і лежав, закутаний у мішковині, на землі.
And David besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night on the earth.
І підійшли до нього старійшини його дому, щоби підвести його із землі, але він не забажав, і не їв з ними хліба.
And the elders of his house arose, [and went] to him, to raise him up from the earth; but he would not, and he ate no bread with them.
І сталося на сьомий день, що померла дитина. Та раби Давида побоялися сповістити йому, що дитина померла, і сказали так: Ось, коли ще дитина жила, ми йому говорили, але не слухав нашого голосу, а коли скажемо йому, що дитина померла, то вчинить зло!
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he would not hearken to our voice; and how shall we say to him, The child is dead? he may do some harm.
І зрозумів Давид, про що його слуги шепочуть, і усвідомив Давид, що дитина померла. І сказав Давид своїм слугам: Що, дитина померла? Вони ж відповіли: Померла.
But David saw that his servants whispered, and David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.
І підійнявся Давид із землі, помився і намастився олією, змінив свій одяг, увійшов до Божого дому і поклонився Йому. Тоді він зайшов у свій дім і попросив їсти хліба. Перед ним поклали хліб, і він їв.
Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothing, and entered into the house of Jehovah and worshipped; then he came to his own house and required them to set bread before him, and he ate.
А його слуги сказали йому: Що означає те, що ти робиш? Коли дитина ще жила, ти постив, плакав і вболівав, коли ж дитина померла, ти встав, їв хліб і пив…
And his servants said to him, What thing is this which thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child alive; but as soon as the child is dead, thou dost rise and eat bread.
Коли дитина ще жила, — сказав Давид, — я постив і плакав, бо сказав собі: Хто знає, чи не помилує мене Господь, і дитина житиме!
And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I thought, Who knows? [perhaps] Jehovah will be gracious to me, that the child may live.
А тепер вона померла, тож чому це я маю постити? Не зможу її повернути. Я ще піду до неї, а вона не повернеться до мене…
But now he is dead, why should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.
І потішив Давид Вирсавію, свою жінку, увійшов до неї і спав з нею, і вона зачала та народила сина, і назвала його Соломон, і Господь його полюбив.
Solomon's Birth
And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her and lay with her; and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon; and Jehovah loved him.

Він послав через пророка Натана, і назвав його Ідеді [3] — задля Господа.
And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, for Jehovah's sake.
Йоав переміг Раввата, сина Аммона, і захопив царське місто.
David Captures Rabbah
And Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

І послав Йоав вісників до Давида, і сказав: Я переміг Раввата і захопив Місто вод.
And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah, and have taken the city of waters.
Тепер же збери решту народу і отаборися напроти міста, і візьми його, щоб не я першим узяв місто і щоб не було названо на ньому моє ім’я!
And now gather the rest of the people, and encamp against the city and take it: lest I take the city and it be called by my name.
Тож Давид зібрав увесь народ, пішов на Раввата, воював проти нього і взяв його.
And David gathered all the people, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it and took it.
Він узяв вінець Мелхола, їхнього царя з його голови (його вага — талант золота і дорогоцінного каменя), і був на голові Давида. І він забрав з міста дуже багато здобичі.
And he took the crown of their king from off his head, the weight of which was a talent of gold with [the] precious stones; and it was [set] on David's head; and he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance.
Народ, який був у ньому, він вивів, поклав до пили та до залізних молотарок, перевів їх через цегельні, — і так учинив з усіма містами синів Аммона. А тоді Давид і весь народ повернулися в Єрусалим.
And he brought out the people that were in it, and put them under the saw, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkilns. And so did he to all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
