Був там один прозваний беззаконним сином, а його ім’я — Савей, син Вохорія, чоловік-веніаминівець. Він затрубив у ріг і сказав: Немає нам частки в Давиді, ні спадку для нас в сині Єссея! Кожний чоловік до свого поселення, Ізраїле!

The Rebellion of Sheba

Now there happened to be there a worthless man, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite. And he blew the trumpet and said,
“We have no portion in David,
and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse;
every man to his tents, O Israel!”

І кожний чоловік Ізраїля пішов від Давида за Савеєм, сином Вохорія, а муж Юди пристав до їхнього царя — від Йордану і аж до Єрусалима.

So all the men of Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem.

Коли Давид прийшов у Єрусалим до свого дому, то цар взяв десятьох жінок, своїх наложниць, яких залишив стерегти дім, і помістив їх у домі сторожі, і годував їх, та не ввійшов до жодної з них, і їх утримували аж до дня їхньої смерті — живі вдови.

And David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house and put them in a house under guard and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood.

І промовив цар до Амессая: До трьох днів склич мені мужів Юди, ти ж сам будь тут.

Then the king said to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself.”

Тож Амессай пішов скликати Юду, та забарився за часом, який йому назначив Давид.

So Amasa went to summon Judah, but he delayed beyond the set time that had been appointed him.

І сказав Давид Авессі: Тепер зло нам учинить Савей, син Вохорія, більше, ніж Авесалом, тож тепер ти візьми із собою слуг твого володаря і поженися за ним, щоб часом не знайшов собі укріплені міста і не сховався від наших очей.

And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he get himself to fortified cities and escape from us.”a

І за ним вийшли мужі Йоава, і хереттійці, і фелеттійці, і всі сильні, а вийшли з Єрусалима, щоб гнатися за Савеєм, сином Вохорія.

And there went out after him Joab’s men and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men. They went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

І вони були біля великого каменя, що в Ґаваоні, і Амессай увійшов перед них. А Йоав був одягнений у плащ поверх свого одягу, і на ньому був підперезаний меч, прикріплений до його стегон у своїх піхвах, і меч легко виходив і входив.

When they were at the great stone that is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a soldier’s garment, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened on his thigh, and as he went forward it fell out.

І сказав Йоав Амессаєві: Чи ти здоровий, брате? А правою рукою Йоав схопив бороду Амессая, начебто, щоб його поцілувати.

And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

10

І Амессай не остерігся меча, що в руці Йоава, і Йоав уразив його ним у живіт, і вилилася на землю його утроба. І він не повторив йому, і той помер.
Йоав і Авесса, його брат, гналися за Савеєм, сином Вохорія.

But Amasa did not observe the sword that was in Joab’s hand. So Joab struck him with it in the stomach and spilled his entrails to the ground without striking a second blow, and he died.
Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.

І над ним став муж зі слуг Йоава, і сказав: Хто той, який за Йоавом і хто за Давидом, за Йоавом.

And one of Joab’s young men took his stand by Amasa and said, “Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.”

12

А Амессай валявся в крові посеред стежки, і побачив чоловік, що весь народ стає, тож відтягнув Амессая зі стежки на поле, і накинув на нього плащ, оскільки він побачив, що кожний, хто підходив до нього, ставав.

And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the highway. And anyone who came by, seeing him, stopped. And when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field and threw a garment over him.

Коли ж був усунений зі стежки, кожний чоловік Ізраїля пройшов услід за Йоавом, щоб гнатися за Савеєм, сином Вохорія.

When he was taken out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

14

А він пройшов усі племена Ізраїля до Авеля і до Ветмахи, і всі зібралися в Харрі, і пішли за ним.

And Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth-maacah,b and all the Bichritesc assembled and followed him in.

15

І прийшли, і взяли його в облогу в Авелі й Ветмасі. І насипали насип коло міста. Він був біля стіни, тож весь народ, який з Йоавом, задумав повалити стіну.

And all the men who were with Joab came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah. They cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart, and they were battering the wall to throw it down.

16

А мудра жінка закликала зі стіни і сказала: Послухайте, послухайте, скажіть же Йоавові: Наблизься аж сюди, і заговорю до нього.

Then a wise woman called from the city, “Listen! Listen! Tell Joab, ‘Come here, that I may speak to you.’”

17

І наблизився він до неї, а жінка запитала: Чи ти є Йоав? Він же сказав: Я! Вона ж сказала йому: Послухай слова твоєї рабині! А Йоав сказав: Я слухаю!

And he came near her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your servant.” And he answered, “I am listening.”

18

І вона заговорила, промовляючи: Слово сказали між прадідами, кажучи: Обов’язково запитувалося [1] в Авелі та в Дані, чи вірні Ізраїля не спромоглися здійснити те, що постановили; обов’язково запитають [2] в Авелі й так, чи вони не спромоглися здійснити.

Then she said, “They used to say in former times, ‘Let them but ask counsel at Abel,’ and so they settled a matter.

19

Я є мирне місто із сильних міст Ізраїля, ти ж шукаєш знищити місто — місто-матір у Ізраїлі. Навіщо нищиш Господню спадщину?

19

I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up the heritage of the Lord?”

20

А Йоав відповів і сказав: Милосердя мені, милосердя мені, коли знищу і коли вигублю.

Joab answered, “Far be it from me, far be it, that I should swallow up or destroy!

21

Чи не так діло, що чоловік з гори Єфрема, його ім’я Савей, син Вохорія, і він підняв свою руку на царя Давида. Дайте мені його самого, і відійду від міста! І сказала жінка Йоаву: Ось його голова буде скинена тобі з мура!

That is not true. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, called Sheba the son of Bichri, has lifted up his hand against King David. Give up him alone, and I will withdraw from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall.”

22

І прийшла жінка до всього народу, і заговорила до всього міста у своїй мудрості. І відтяла голову Савея, сина Вохорія, і скинула Йоавові. І він затрубив у ріг, і кожний чоловік розійшовся з міста до свого житла. А Йоав повернувся в Єрусалим до царя.

Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, every man to his home. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

23

І Йоав був над усією армією Ізраїля, і Ванея, син Йодая, — над хереттійцями і над фелеттійцями,

Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites;

24

і Адонірам — над податком, і Йосафат, син Ахілута, — літописець,

24

and Adoram was in charge of the forced labor; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;

25

і Суса — писар, і Садок, і Авіятар — священики,

and Sheva was secretary; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;
