І довготривалою була війна між домом Саула та між домом Давида. І дім Давида поступав уперед і зміцнявся, а дім Саула відступав і слабшав.

Joab Kills Abner

Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David. But David grew stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.

У Хевроні в Давида народилися сини: його первородний був Амнон від Ахінооми з Єзраела,

Sons of David

Sons were born to David in Hebron: His firstborn was Amnon by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

3

його другий син — Далуя від Авіґеї, кармилійки, і третій — Авесалом, син Маахи, дочки Толмії, царя Ґесіра,

his second, [a]Chileab, by Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite; the third, Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur;

і четвертий — Орнія, син Фенґіти, і п’ятий — Саватія від Авітали,

the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

5

і шостий — Єтераама, від Еґли, жінки Давида. Вони народилися в Давида в Хевроні.

and the sixth, Ithream, by David’s wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.

І сталося, коли була війна між домом Саула і між домом Давида, то Авенир був тим, хто утримував дім Саула.

Abner Joins Forces with David

Now it was so, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner was strengthening his hold on the house of Saul.

У Саула була наложниця Ресфа, дочка Яла. І Мемфівостей, син Саула, сказав до Авенира: Як це ти ввійшов до наложниці мого батька?

And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. So Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine?”

І Авенир дуже розлютився через слова Мемфівостея. І сказав йому Авенир: Хіба я є псячою головою? Сьогодні я вчинив милосердя з домом твого батька Саула, а також з братами і знайомими, і не перейшов до дому Давида, а ти сьогодні шукаєш у мене несправедливості через жінку!

Then Abner became very angry at the words of Ishbosheth, and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman?

Це нехай учинить Бог Авенирові, і це нехай йому додасть, бо так, як поклявся Господь Давидові, так учиню йому в цей день,

May God do so to Abner, and more also, if I do not do for David as the Lord has sworn to him —

10

щоб забрати царство від дому Саула й підняти престол Давида над Ізраїлем і над Юдою від Дана аж до Вирсавії!

10

to transfer the kingdom from the [b]house of Saul, and set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan to Beersheba.”

Мемфівостей не зміг більше відповісти Авенирові й слова, тому що боявся його.

11

And he could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.

12

І Авенир відразу відіслав послів до Давида в Телам, де він перебував, кажучи: Склади зі мною твій завіт, і ось моя рука з тобою, щоби повернути до тебе весь дім Ізраїля.

12

Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to David, saying, “Whose is the land?” saying also, “Make your covenant with me, and indeed my hand shall be with you to bring all Israel to you.”

13

І сказав Давид: Добре, я складу з тобою завіт, тільки я в тебе прошу одну річ, кажучи: Не побачиш мого обличчя, якщо не приведеш Мелхолу, дочку Саула, коли ти прийдеш побачити моє обличчя.

And David said, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. But one thing I require of you: you shall not see my face unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”

14

І відіслав Давид послів до Мемфівостея, сина Саула, кажучи: Віддай мені мою жінку Мелхолу, яку я отримав за сто крайніх плотей филистимців!

So David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”

15

І послав Мемфівостей, і взяв її в її чоловіка, у Фалтіїла, сина Селли.

15

And Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, from [c]Paltiel the son of Laish.

16

Її чоловік ішов з нею, плачучи за нею, аж до Варакіма. І сказав йому Авенир: Іди, повернися! І той повернувся.

16

Then her husband went along with her to Bahurim, [d]weeping behind her. So Abner said to him, “Go, return!” And he returned.

17

І промовив Авенир до старійшин Ізраїля, кажучи: Учора й третього дня ви шукали Давида, щоб царював над вами.

Now Abner had communicated with the elders of Israel, saying, “In time past you were seeking for David to be king over you.

18

Тепер же вчиніть, бо Господь говорив до Давида, кажучи: Рукою мого раба Давида спасу Ізраїля з руки филистимців і з руки всіх їхніх ворогів.

18

Now then, do it! For the Lord has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of My servant David, [e]I will save My people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and the hand of all their enemies.’ ”

19

І заговорив Авенир до вух Веніаміна. І пішов Авенир, щоб говорити до вух Давида в Хевроні все, що милим було в очах Ізраїля і в очах усього дому Веніаміна.

And Abner also spoke in the hearing of Benjamin. Then Abner also went to speak in the hearing of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and the whole house of Benjamin.

20

І прийшов Авенир до Давида в Хеврон, а з ним — двадцять мужів. А Давид зробив бенкет Авенирові та мужам, які з ним.

20

So Abner and twenty men with him came to David at Hebron. And David made a feast for Abner and the men who were with him.

21

І промовив Авенир до Давида: Встану і піду, і зберу до мого володаря-царя весь Ізраїль, і складу з тобою завіт, і царюватимеш над усіма, над чим бажає твоя душа. І Давид відіслав Авенира, і він пішов у мирі.

Then Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your heart desires.” So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.

22

І ось слуги Давида та Йоав приходили з подорожі й несли із собою численну здобич. Авенира не було з Давидом у Хевроні, бо він відіслав його і відпустив у мирі.

Joab Murders Abner

At that moment the servants of David and Joab came from a raid and brought much [f]spoil with them. But Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace.

23

Йоав і все його військо прийшли, і сповістили Йоавові, кажучи: До Давида приходив Авенир, син Нира, і він його відіслав, і той відійшов у мирі.

When Joab and all the troops that were with him had come, they told Joab, saying, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he sent him away, and he has gone in peace.”

24

І ввійшов Йоав до царя, і сказав: Що це вчинив ти? Ось до тебе приходив Авенир, тож навіщо ти його відіслав, і він відійшов у мирі.

24

Then Joab came to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you; why is it that you sent him away, and he has already gone?

25

Хіба ти не знаєш злоби Авенира, сина Нира, що він прийшов, щоб тебе обманути і пізнати твій вихід і твій вхід, і пізнати все, що ти чиниш?

25

Surely you realize that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you, to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you are doing.”

26

І повернувся Йоав від Давида, і відіслав послів за Авениром, і повертають його від джерела Сеірама. А Давид не знав.

26

And when Joab had gone from David’s presence, he sent messengers after Abner, who brought him back from the well of Sirah. But David did not know it.

27

І повернувся Авенир у Хеврон, і звернув його Йоав на сторону від брами, щоб говорити з ним, роблячи засідку, а там ударив його в живіт, і він помер за кров Асаїла, брата Йоава.

Now when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him privately, and there [g]stabbed him in the stomach, so that he died for the blood of Asahel his brother.

28

Після цього почув Давид і сказав: Невинний я і моє царство перед Господом навіки за кров Авенира, сина Нира.

28

Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “My kingdom and I are [h]guiltless before the Lord forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner.

29

Нехай зійде вона на голову Йоава і на весь дім його батька, і в домі Йоава хай не переведеться той, хто має хворобливі виділення, і прокажений, хто тримає палицю, і хто поляже від меча, і кому бракує хліба!

29

Let it rest on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house; and let there never fail to be in the [i]house of Joab one who has a discharge or is a leper, who leans on a staff or falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.”

30

А Йоав і його брат Авесса зробили засідку на Авенира за те, що він убив Асаїла, їхнього брата, у Ґаваоні на війні.

30

So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

31

І промовив Давид до Йоава і до всього народу, який з ним: Роздеріть ваш одяг і підпережіться мішковиною, і оплакуйте Авенира! І цар Давид ішов за марами.

David’s Mourning for Abner

Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes, gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn for Abner.” And King David followed the coffin.

32

І ховають Авенира в Хевроні. Цар підвищив свій голос і заплакав над його гробницею, і весь народ плакав над Авениром.

32

So they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept.

33

І заплакав цар над Авениром, і сказав: Хіба смертю Навала [1] помирає Авенир?

33

And the king sang a lament over Abner and said:
“Should Abner die as a fool dies?

34

Твої руки не були зв’язані, твої ноги — не в колодках. Не прийшов ти, як Навал, ти впав перед синами несправедливості! І весь народ зібрався оплакувати його.

34

Your hands were not bound
Nor your feet put into fetters;
As a man falls before wicked men, so you fell.”
Then all the people wept over him again.

35

І прийшов увесь народ вмовити Давида їсти хліб, коли ще був день, та Давид поклявся, кажучи: Це нехай учинить мені Бог, і це додасть, коли до заходу сонця скуштую хліба чи будь-чого!

And when all the people came to persuade David to eat food while it was still day, David took an oath, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else till the sun goes down!”

36

І весь народ пізнав, і милим було перед ними все, що зробив цар перед народом.

36

Now all the people took note of it, and it pleased them, since whatever the king did pleased all the people.

37

І пізнав увесь народ і весь Ізраїль у той день, що не від царя вийшов наказ убити Авенира, сина Нира.

37

For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been the king’s intent to kill Abner the son of Ner.

38

І промовив цар до своїх слуг: Хіба ви не знаєте, що великий проводир у цей день упав у Ізраїлі,

38

Then the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel?

39

і що я сьогодні є родичем і ставлеником царя, а ці мужі, сини Саруї, гірші за мене. Нехай віддасть Господь тому, хто чинить погане, за його злом.

39

And I am weak today, though anointed king; and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too harsh for me. The Lord shall repay the evildoer according to his wickedness.”
