Вона завагітніла й народила хлопчика. І, побачивши, що він гарний, вони переховували його три місяці.
The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was a special baby and kept him hidden for three months.
Оскільки вони не могли його більше переховувати, то мати взяла кошик, промазала його асфальтом зі смолою, поклала туди дитину, та й поставила його в очереті біля берега ріки.
But when she could no longer hide him, she got a basket made of papyrus reeds and waterproofed it with tar and pitch. She put the baby in the basket and laid it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile River.
А його сестра стежила здалека, аби довідатися, що з ним станеться далі.
The baby’s sister then stood at a distance, watching to see what would happen to him.
Тим часом фараонова дочка спустилася скупатися в ріці, а її рабині ходили біля ріки. Коли вона побачила в очереті кошик, то послала рабиню і підібрала його.
Soon Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe in the river, and her attendants walked along the riverbank. When the princess saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it for her.
А відкривши, бачить, що в кошику плаче немовля. І фараонова дочка пожаліла його, і сказала: Воно з єврейських дітей.
When the princess opened it, she saw the baby. The little boy was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This must be one of the Hebrew children,” she said.
Тут його сестра сказала фараоновій дочці: Хочеш, покличу тобі жінку-годувальницю з єврейок, і буде годувати тобі дитину?
Then the baby’s sister approached the princess. “Should I go and find one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” she asked.
А фараонова дочка відповіла їй: Іди. Тож, пішовши, дівчина покликала матір дитини.
“Yes, do!” the princess replied. So the girl went and called the baby’s mother.
І фараонова дочка сказала їй: Дивися мені за цією дитиною і вигодуй її для мене, а я дам тобі винагороду! Тож жінка взяла дитину і годувала її грудьми.
“Take this baby and nurse him for me,” the princess told the baby’s mother. “I will pay you for your help.” So the woman took her baby home and nursed him.
А коли хлопчик підріс, то вона привела його до фараонової дочки, і він став їй за сина. Вона ж дала йому ім’я Мойсей [1] , кажучи: Я його витягла з води.
Сталося ж після багатьох тих днів, коли Мойсей став дорослим, він вийшов до своїх братів — Ізраїльських синів. Коли ж він спостерігав за їхніми стражданнями, то помітив чоловіка-єгиптянина, який бив одного єврея — з його братів, синів Ізраїля.
Moses Escapes to Midian
Many years later, when Moses had grown up, he went out to visit his own people, the Hebrews, and he saw how hard they were forced to work. During his visit, he saw an Egyptian beating one of his fellow Hebrews.
Оглянувшись туди-сюди, він не побачив нікого, тож убив єгиптянина і заховав його в піску.
After looking in all directions to make sure no one was watching, Moses killed the Egyptian and hid the body in the sand.
А коли він вийшов наступного дня, то побачив двох чоловіків-євреїв, які билися. І каже тому, хто кривдив: Навіщо б’єш ближнього?
The next day, when Moses went out to visit his people again, he saw two Hebrew men fighting. “Why are you beating up your friend?” Moses said to the one who had started the fight.
Той же відповів: Хто тебе поставив старшим і суддею над нами? Чи ти не хочеш і мене вбити, як учора вбив єгиптянина? Мойсей злякався, та й сказав: Невже такою відомою стала ця подія?
The man replied, “Who appointed you to be our prince and judge? Are you going to kill me as you killed that Egyptian yesterday?”

Про ту справу почув фараон і намагався вбити Мойсея. Тож Мойсей забрався геть з-перед фараонового обличчя і оселився в Мадіямській землі. Прийшовши в Мадіямську землю, він сів біля криниці.
And sure enough, Pharaoh heard what had happened, and he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in the land of Midian.

А мадіямський священик мав семеро дочок, які пасли овець свого батька. Прийшовши, вони черпали воду, поки не наповнили корита, щоб напоїти овець свого батька.
Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters who came as usual to draw water and fill the water troughs for their father’s flocks.
Та прийшли пастухи й відігнали їх. А Мойсей, уставши, визволив їх, набрав їм води і напоїв їхніх овець.
But some other shepherds came and chased them away. So Moses jumped up and rescued the girls from the shepherds. Then he drew water for their flocks.
А коли вони прибули до свого батька Раґуїла, то він запитав їх: Чому це сьогодні ви так рано прибули?
When the girls returned to Reuel, their father, he asked, “Why are you back so soon today?”
Вони ж відповіли: Чоловік-єгиптянин врятував нас від пастухів, набрав нам води і напоїв овець.
“An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds,” they answered. “And then he drew water for us and watered our flocks.”
Він же запитав своїх дочок: А де він? Чому ж ви так покинули чоловіка? Тож закличте його, нехай попоїсть хліба!
“Then where is he?” their father asked. “Why did you leave him there? Invite him to come and eat with us.”
І Мойсей поселився в того чоловіка, і він видав свою дочку Сепфору Мойсеєві за дружину.
Moses accepted the invitation, and he settled there with him. In time, Reuel gave Moses his daughter Zipporah to be his wife.
Жінка ж завагітніла й народила сина. І дав Мойсей йому ім’я — Ґирсам [2] , кажучи: Адже я — захожий у чужій землі.
Після багатьох тих днів помер єгипетський цар. І застогнали сини Ізраїля від робіт, і заволали. І їхні зойки від непосильної праці піднялися до Бога.
Years passed, and the king of Egypt died. But the Israelites continued to groan under their burden of slavery. They cried out for help, and their cry rose up to God.
І Бог почув їхній стогін, і Бог згадав про Свій завіт з Авраамом, Ісааком і Яковом.
God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
