The Contrast of Wisdom and Folly

A good name is better than precious ointment,
and the day of death than the day of birth.

It is better to go to the house of mourning
than to go to the house of feasting,
for this is the end of all mankind,
and the living will lay it to heart.

Sorrow is better than laughter,
for by sadness of face the heart is made glad.

Серце мудрих — у домі плачу, а серце безумних — у домі радості.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

Краще слухати картання мудрого, ніж чоловіка, що слухає пісню безумних.

It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise
than to hear the song of fools.

Адже сміх безумних, як голос тернини під казаном. І це — марнота.

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot,
so is the laughter of the fools;
this also is vanity.a

Бо пригноблення виводить із рівноваги мудрого й губить серце його шляхетності.

Surely oppression drives the wise into madness,
and a bribe corrupts the heart.

Краще кінець справи від її початку, кращий довготерпеливий від того, що надимається духом.

Better is the end of a thing than its beginning,
and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

Не поспішай палати гнівом у твоєму дусі, бо гнів спочине в подолі беззаконних.

Be not quick in your spirit to become angry,
for anger lodges in the heartb of fools.

Не скажи: Що сталося, чому ранішні дні були кращі від цих? Бо ти про це не запитав у мудрості.

Say not, “Why were the former days better than these?”
For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.

Wisdom is good with an inheritance,
an advantage to those who see the sun.

Адже мудрість у своїй тіні, як тінь срібла, і надмір знання мудрості оживить того, що її посідає.

For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money,
and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

Поглянь на Божі створіння. Бо хто зможе прикрасити того, кого Бог скрутив?

Consider the work of God:
who can make straight what he has made crooked?

У день доброти живи в добрі, а в дні зла гляди. І це співзвучним цьому зробив Бог задля того, щоб людина після себе не знайшла нічого.

In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man may not find out anything that will be after him.

15

Я все побачив у днях моєї марноти. Є праведний, що гине у своїй праведності, і є безбожний, що залишається у своєму злі.

In my vainc life I have seen everything. There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his evildoing.

Не ставай дуже праведним і не мудруй надмірно, щоби часом ти не зійшов з розуму.

16

Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself?

17

Не будь дуже безбожним і не стань твердим, щоб ти не помер не у свій час.

Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time?

Добре тобі триматися цього, і тим не опогань свою руку, бо хто боїться Бога, тому пощастить в усьому.

It is good that you should take hold of this, and from that withhold not your hand, for the one who fears God shall come out from both of them.

Мудрість допоможе мудрому більше, ніж десять володарів, що є в місті.

Wisdom gives strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.

20

Адже немає на землі праведної людини, яка чинитиме добро і не згрішить.

Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.

21

І не прикладай твоє серце до всіх слів, які скажуть, щоб ти не почув твого раба, який тебе проклинає,

Do not take to heart all the things that people say, lest you hear your servant cursing you.

22

бо він багаторазово заподіє тобі зло, із численними повтореннями зробить зло твоєму серцю, щоб і ти інших проклинав.

Your heart knows that many times you yourself have cursed others.

Це все я випробував мудрістю. Я сказав: Стану мудрим, —

All this I have tested by wisdom. I said, “I will be wise,” but it was far from me.

24

і вона віддалилася від мене, подалі від того, що була, і глибину глибини, хто її знайде?

That which has been is far off, and deep, very deep; who can find it out?

25

Обійшов я і моє серце, щоб пізнати, аби розвідати і знайти мудрість і ліки, і пізнати безумність, твердість і крутійство безбожних.

I turned my heart to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the foolishness that is madness.

І знаходжу я гіркіше за смерть, жінку, яка є пасткою, і її серце — сіті, її руки — кайдани. Добре перед обличчям Бога звільнитися від неї, і хто грішить, схоплений буде нею.

And I find something more bitter than death: the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands are fetters. He who pleases God escapes her, but the sinner is taken by her.

Поглянь, це я знайшов, — сказав Екклезіаст, — одне по одному, щоб віднайти задум,

Behold, this is what I found, says the Preacher, while adding one thing to another to find the scheme of things —

який ще шукала моя душа, та я не знайшов. Я знайшов одного чоловіка з тисячі, та жінки в усьому цьому я не знайшов.

which my soul has sought repeatedly, but I have not found. One man among a thousand I found, but a woman among all these I have not found.

Лише ось це я знайшов, що Бог зробив людину праведною, а вони вишукували численні вимисли.

See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.
