Усі ізраїльські сини нарікали на Мойсея і Аарона. Уся громада казала їм: Краще б ми повмирали в Єгипетській землі чи в цій пустелі! О, якби ми повмирали!
And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!
І навіщо нас Господь вводить у цю землю: щоб нам полягти в битві? Наші жінки й діти стануть здобиччю. Тому, хіба тепер не краще нам повернутися в Єгипет?
Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?”
І вони говорили один одному: Поставмо собі проводиря та повертаймося в Єгипет!
And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”
Тоді Мойсей з Аароном упали на обличчя перед усією громадою ізраїльських синів,
Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel.
а Ісус, син Навина, і Халев, син Єфонії, — з тих, хто оглядав землю, — роздерли на собі одяг,
And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes
і говорили до всієї громади ізраїльських синів, кажучи: Земля, що її ми оглянули, є дуже-дуже добра.
and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.
Якщо Господь вибирає нас, то і введе нас у цю землю й дасть її нам, — землю, що тече молоком і медом.
If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey.
Але не будьте відступниками від Господа! Тож ви не лякайтеся народу тієї землі, бо він для нас — пожива. Адже сприятливий час відійшов від них, а серед нас — Господь! Не бійтеся їх!
Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.”
Однак уся громада сказала: Закидати їх камінням! Та Господня слава з’явилася в хмарі над наметом свідчення — усім ізраїльським синам.
Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.
І Господь сказав Мойсеєві: Доки цей народ підбурюватиме Мене? Доки не віритимуть Мені посеред усіх ознак, котрі Я вчинив серед них?
And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them?
Уражу їх смертю і знищу їх! А тебе й дім твого батька зроблю великим та численним народом, — більшим, ніж цей.
I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
Та Мойсей сказав Господу: І почує єгиптянин, що Своєю силою Ти вивів з-поміж них цей народ.
Moses Intercedes for the People
But Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them,

Але всі, хто живе на цій землі, чули, що Ти є Господом для цього народу, якому з’являєшся віч-на-віч, Господи; і Твоя хмара стала над ними, і Ти йдеш перед ними в хмарному стовпі вдень та в стовпі вогню вночі.
and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people. For you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.
А вигубиш цей народ як одну людину, то народи, які чули Твоє Ім’я, говоритимуть, кажучи:
Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say,
Оскільки Господь не зміг ввести цей народ в землю, котру їм пообіцяв у клятві, то вигубив його в пустелі.
‘It is because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’
А тепер, хай же прославиться Твоя сила, Господи, як Ти сказав, промовляючи:
And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying,
Господь довготерпеливий, дуже милосердний і правдивий; прощає беззаконня, несправедливості й гріхи та жодним чином не вважатиме чистим [1] винного, Котрий воздає за гріхи батьків дітям до третього й четвертого поколінь.
‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’
Прости гріх цьому народові за великим Твоїм милосердям, як і був Ти милосердним до них від Єгипту й аж дотепер!
Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.”
А Господь сказав Мойсеєві: Я ще раз виявлю милосердя до них — за твоїм словом.
God Promises Judgment
Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, according to your word.
Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, according to your word.
Але живу Я, і живе Моє Ім’я, і Господня слава наповнить усю землю!
But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord,
Тому всі люди, які бачили Мою славу й ознаки, котрі Я вчинив у Єгипті і в цій пустелі, та випробовували Мене ось уже в десятий раз, і не послухалися Мого голосу, —
none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice,
таки не побачать землі, котру Я пообіцяв у клятві їхнім батькам! Але їхні діти, які є тут зі Мною, які не знають ще ні добра, ні зла, усякий недосвідчений та молодий, — цим Я дам землю! А всі, хто підбурював Мене, не побачать її!
shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it.
Халев же, Мій раб, — оскільки в нього був інший дух і він пішов слідом за Мною, — то введу його в землю, в яку він уже ходив, і його потомство успадкує її!
But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.
Та амалик і ханаанець живуть у долині. Завтра ви поверніть і йдіть до пустелі шляхом Червоного моря.
Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”
І промовив Господь до Мойсея й Аарона, кажучи:
And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
Доки бути цій злій громаді? Те, що вони нарікають на Мене, і скарги ізраїльських синів на вас Я почув.
“How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me.
Скажи їм: Я живу! — каже Господь. Що ви сказали до Моїх вух, те дійсно і зроблю вам.
Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the Lord, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you:
У цій пустелі поляжуть ваші кості, — уся ваша кількість, ваші пораховані від двадцятилітніх і старші, які нарікали на Мене.
your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me,
Ніхто з вас не ввійде в землю, над якою Я простягнув Свою руку, поклявшись вас на ній поселити, — крім Халева, сина Єфонії, та Ісуса, сина Навина.
not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
А дітей, про яких ви сказали, що стануть здобиччю, Я введу в землю, і вони успадкують землю, яку ви відкинули.
But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected.
А ваші кості поляжуть у цій пустелі.
But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
Тож ваші сини будуть поглинатися пустелею сорок років і розплачуватимуться за вашу розпусту, доки не перетворяться в прах ваші кості в пустелі.
And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness.
За кількістю тих днів, упродовж яких ви оглядали землю, — сорок днів, — будете розплачуватися за ваші гріхи сорок років — рік за день, — і ви пізнаєте гнів Мого обурення.
According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’
Я, Господь, це сказав! Насправді так зроблю із цією нікчемною громадою, яка об’єдналася проти Мене! Вони будуть вигублені в цій пустелі, — тут вони загинуть!
I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.”
А ті люди, яких посилав Мойсей оглядати землю і які, повернувшись, нарікали на неї перед громадою та розпускали погані чутки про землю, —
And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land —
померли від пошесті перед Господом ті люди, які говорили погане проти землі.
the men who brought up a bad report of the land — died by plague before the Lord.
А Ісус, син Навина, і Халев, син Єфонії, залишилися живими з тих чоловіків, які ходили оглянути землю.
Of those men who went to spy out the land, only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive.
І Мойсей переказав ці слова всім ізраїльським синам, і народ дуже засмутився.
Israel Defeated in Battle
When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly.

А вставши вранці, вони пішли на вершину гори й говорили: Ось ми, присутні тут, підемо до краю, про який сказав Господь, бо ми згрішили.
And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, “Here we are. We will go up to the place that the Lord has promised, for we have sinned.”
Та Мойсей сказав: Чому ви порушуєте слово Господа? Успіху не буде у вас!
But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the Lord, when that will not succeed?
Не йдіть, бо немає з вами Господа, тож ви впадете перед вашими ворогами.
Do not go up, for the Lord is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies.
Адже там перед вами — амалик і ханаанець, і поляжете від меча, бо ви відвернулися, виявивши непослух Господу, тож Господа не буде посеред вас.
For there the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.”
І все ж таки вони рішуче пішли на вершину гори. А ковчег Господнього завіту і Мойсей не рушали з табору.
But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed out of the camp.
