Jesus’ Authority Questioned

Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him

і промовили до Нього, запитуючи: Скажи нам, якою владою Ти це робиш, або хто дав Тобі цю владу?

and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?”

3

У відповідь Він сказав їм: Запитаю вас і Я [одну] річ; скажіть Мені:

But He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me:

4

хрещення Івана було з неба чи від людей?

4

The baptism of John — was it from heaven or from men?”

5

Вони міркували собі, кажучи: Коли скажемо: З неба, — відкаже: Чому ж ви не повірили йому?

5

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why [a]then did you not believe him?’

6

Якщо ж скажемо: Від людей, — увесь народ поб’є нас камінням, бо впевнений, що Іван — пророк.

6

But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”

7

І вони відповіли, що не знають звідкіля.

So they answered that they did not know where it was from.

8

А Ісус сказав їм: То і Я не скажу вам, якою владою це роблю!

8

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

9

І почав Він розповідати людям таку притчу: Один чоловік насадив виноградник, віддав його робітникам, та й відбув на довгий час.

The Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers

Then He began to tell the people this parable: “A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to [b]vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time.

10

У певну пору послав до робітників раба, щоби дали йому з врожаю виноградника, а робітники, побивши його, відіслали ні з чим.

10

Now at [c]vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

11

І знову послав другого раба; вони й того побили, зневажили, та й відіслали ні з чим.

11

Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.

12

І знову послав — третього; вони й цього, завдавши йому ран, вигнали.

12

And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.

13

Сказав тоді господар виноградника: Що маю робити? Пошлю свого улюбленого сина, — може, [побачивши] його, посоромляться?

13

“Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’

14

Угледівши його, робітники міркували собі, кажучи: Це ж спадкоємець! Убиймо його, щоби спадщина стала наша!

14

But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’

15

І, викинувши його геть з виноградника, вбили. Що ж зробить їм господар виноградника?

15

So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

16

Прийде й вигубить цих робітників та віддасть виноградника іншим! Почувши, вони сказали: Хай так не буде!

16

He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others.”
And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!”

17

Він же, поглянувши на них, сказав: Що означає написане: Камінь, який відкинули будівничі, цей став наріжним?

17

Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written:
‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone’?

18

Кожний, хто впаде на той камінь, розіб’ється, [а] на кого він сам упаде, того розчавить.

18

Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

19

Саме в той час хотіли первосвященики та книжники накласти руки на Нього, бо зрозуміли, що цю притчу Він сказав проти них, та побоялися народу.

19

And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they [d]feared the people — for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

20

Стежачи, вони послали підглядачів, які видавали себе за праведних, щоби спіймати Його на слові та видати Його урядові й владі намісника.

The Pharisees: Is It Lawful to Pay Taxes to Caesar?

So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor.

21

Тож вони запитали Його, кажучи: Учителю, знаємо, що правильно говориш і навчаєш, не дивишся на обличчя, але по правді наставляєш на Божу дорогу.

Then they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth:

22

Чи належить нам давати данину кесареві, чи ні?

22

Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

23

Зрозумівши їхню підступність, Він сказав їм: [Чому Мене спокушаєте?]

23

But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, [e]“Why do you test Me?

24

Покажіть Мені динарій [1]. Чий там образ і напис? [У відповідь] вони сказали: Кесаря.

24

Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?”
They answered and said, “Caesar’s.”

25

А Він відказав їм: Тож кесареве віддайте кесареві, а Боже — Богові!

25

And He said to them, “Render[f] therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

26

І не могли піймати Його на слові перед народом, і здивувавшись Його відповіддю, вони замовкли.

26

But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.

27

Підійшли деякі з садукеїв [2] , які стверджували, що немає воскресіння, та й запитали Його,

The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?

Then some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,

28

кажучи: Учителю, Мойсей записав нам, що якби у когось помер брат, котрий має дружину, і помер бездітний, то нехай його брат візьме її за дружину та відновить потомство для свого брата.

saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.

29

Отже, було сім братів. Перший, узявши дружину, помер бездітним.

29

Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children.

30

І другий, [узявши дружину, також помер бездітним].

30

And the second [g]took her as wife, and he died childless.

31

І третій узяв, — і так само всі семеро; жодний не залишив дітей, усі померли.

31

Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven [h]also; and they left no children, and died.

32

Останньою померла й жінка.

32

Last of all the woman died also.

33

У воскресінні котрому з них вона буде дружиною? Бо ж семеро мали її за дружину.

33

Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.”

34

Ісус же [у відповідь] сказав їм: Сини цього віку женяться і виходять заміж,

34

Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage.

35

а ті, які будуть гідні досягнути того віку й воскреснуть з мертвих, не женяться і не виходять заміж,

35

But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;

36

адже вони більше вмерти не можуть, оскільки є рівні ангелам, є Божими синами, будучи синами воскресіння.

36

nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

37

А що мертві встають, то й Мойсей показав біля куща, коли назвав Господа Богом Авраама, і Богом Ісаака, і Богом Якова.

37

But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’

38

Бог же не є Богом мертвих, а живих, бо всі для Нього живуть!

38

For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him.”

39

У відповідь деякі з книжників сказали: Учителю, добре Ти сказав!

39

Then some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.”

40

Тож більше не наважувалися Його ні про що запитувати.

40

But after that they dared not question Him anymore.

41

А Він промовив до них: Як же це кажуть, що Христос є сином Давида?

Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?

And He said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David?

42

Таж сам Давид говорить у книзі Псалмів: Промовив Господь до мого Господа: Сядь праворуч Мене,

42

Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,

43

поки не покладу ворогів Твоїх підніжком для Твоїх ніг!

43

Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’

44

Отже, Давид називає Його Господом, як же Він йому син?

44

Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?”

45

Коли весь народ слухав, Він казав Своїм учням:

Beware of the Scribes

Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples,

46

Стережіться книжників, які бажають ходити в шатах і люблять вітання на майданах та перші місця в синагогах і перші місця на гостинах,

46

“Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts,

47

які поїдають доми вдовиць і напоказ довго моляться; вони приймуть дуже тяжкий осуд!

47

who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
