Що, скажемо, здобув Авраам, наш прабатько за тілом?

Abraham Justified by Faith

What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh?

Якщо Авраам оправдався ділами, то він має похвалу, але не перед Богом.

For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.

Бо що каже Писання? Повірив Авраам Богові, і це зараховано йому за праведність!

For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”

Адже тому, хто робить діла, нагорода зараховується не як благодать, а як належне.

Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.

А тому, хто не робить, але вірить у Того, Хто оправдує нечестивого, віра його зараховується за праведність.

And to the one who does not work but believes ina him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,

Давид також називає блаженною ту людину, якій Бог зараховує праведність незалежно від діл:

just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

Блаженні, кому прощені беззаконня і кому покриті гріхи.

“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
and whose sins are covered;

8

Блаженна людина, якій Господь не зарахує гріха!

blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”

Отже, чи це блаженство є лише щодо обрізання, чи також і щодо необрізання? Ми кажемо, що Авраамові віра зарахована за праведність.

Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness.

Але як зарахована? Тоді, коли він був обрізаний, чи коли був необрізаний? Не після обрізання, а до обрізання!

How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised.

11

А знак обрізання він одержав як печать праведності через віру, що її мав ще до обрізання, щоби йому бути батьком усіх віруючих, які необрізані, — аби і їм це було зараховано за праведність;

He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well,

щоб так само бути й батьком обрізаних, — не тільки тих, які обрізані, але й тих, хто йде слідами віри, яку, ще будучи необрізаним, мав наш батько Авраам.

and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

Адже не Законом дано обітницю Авраамові та його нащадкам, що він стане спадкоємцем світу, а через праведність віри.

The Promise Realized Through Faith

For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.

14

Бо якщо ті, хто від Закону, — спадкоємці, тоді віра втрачає силу, а обітниця скасовується.

14

For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.

15

Адже Закон спричиняє гнів, а де немає Закону, там немає і переступу.

15

For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.

16

Через це обітниця, — щоб вона була з благодаті, аби бути непорушною для всіх нащадків, — є з віри; і не тільки для того, хто від Закону, а й для того, хто є з віри Авраама, який для нас усіх є батьком;

That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring — not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,

як ото написано: Я настановив тебе батьком багатьох народів — перед Богом, в Якого він повірив, Який оживляє мертвих та називає те, що не існує, як існуюче.

as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations” — in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

Він, всупереч сподіванню, повірив надії, що стане батьком багатьох народів, згідно зі сказаним: Таким буде твоє потомство.

In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.”

19

Він не ослаб у вірі й не вважав свого тіла, — хоча мав майже сто років, — змертвілим, як і змертвілою утробу Сарри;

He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrennessb of Sarah’s womb.

20

він не мав сумніву й недовіри щодо Божої обітниці, але зміцнився вірою і віддав славу Богові,

No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,

21

і був упевнений, що Бог спроможний виконати те, що йому обіцяв.

fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

22

Тому й зараховано йому це за праведність.

22

That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.”
