Хіба я не вільний? Хіба я не апостол? Хіба я не бачив нашого Господа Ісуса Христа? Хіба ви не є моїм ділом у Господі?

A Pattern of Self-Denial

Am I not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?

Коли я не апостол для інших, то для вас я апостол, бо ви є печаттю мого апостольства в Господі.

If I am not an apostle to others, yet doubtless I am to you. For you are the [a]seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

Ось моя відповідь тим, які судять мене!

My defense to those who examine me is this:

Чи ми не маємо права їсти та пити?

Do we have no [b]right to eat and drink?

Чи ми не маємо права водити із собою сестру-жінку, як і інші апостоли, як брати Господні, як Кифа [1]?

Do we have no right to take along [c]a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?

Хіба я особисто і Варнава не маємо права не працювати?

Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working?

Хто з воїнів служить за свої кошти? Хто садить виноград і не їсть його плоду? Або хто пасе отару і не споживає молока з отари?

Who ever goes to war at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? Or who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk of the flock?

Чи я лише по-людському це кажу? Хіба й Закон не говорить про це?

Do I say these things as a mere man? Or does not the law say the same also?

Адже в Законі Мойсея написано: Не зав’язуй рота волові, який молотить! Хіба Бог турбується про волів?

For it is written in the law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” Is it oxen God is concerned about?

Чи Він це говорить зокрема для нас? Так, це написано для нас, бо хто оре, повинен орати з надією, і хто молотить, повинен молотити з надією, що отримає те, на що сподівається.

Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope.

Якщо ми вам посіяли духовне, то чи велика то справа, коли ми пожнемо ваше тілесне?

If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things?

12

Якщо інші на вас мають право, то хіба ми — не більшою мірою? Але ми не скористалися цим правом, а все терпимо, щоб у чомусь не перешкодити Євангелію Христа.

If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more?
Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ.

Хіба ви не знаєте, що ті, які працюють у святому, харчуються зі святилища? А ті, які служать при жертовнику, отримують частку з жертовника?

Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar?

14

Так само й Господь наказав тим, які проповідують Євангеліє, жити з Євангелія.

Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.

15

Але я зовсім не скористався цим. І написав я про це не для того, щоб так було для мене, бо краще мені померти, ніж щоби хто знівечив мою похвалу!

15

But I have used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should be done so to me; for it would be better for me to die than that anyone should make my boasting void.

16

Адже якщо я звіщаю Євангеліє, то немає чим мені хвалитися, — це мій обов’язок. І горе мені, коли я не звіщатиму Євангелія.

16

For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!

17

Якщо я це здійснюю добровільно, то маю нагороду; якщо не добровільно, то виконую доручену мені службу.

For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a stewardship.

18

Яка ж моя нагорода? А та, що проповідуючи Євангеліє, я безкорисливо викладатиму Радісну Вістку, щоб не користуватися своїм правом, яке маю з Євангелія.

18

What is my reward then? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel [d]of Christ without charge, that I may not abuse my authority in the gospel.

19

Будучи вільним від усіх, я себе підкорив усім, щоби багатьох придбати.

Serving All Men

For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more;

20

Для юдеїв я був юдеєм, аби придбати юдеїв. Для тих, які під Законом, я був як той, хто під Законом, щоби придбати тих, котрі під Законом, хоч насправді під Законом я не був.

and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the [e]law, that I might win those who are under the law;

21

Для тих, які без Закону, я жив як той, хто без Закону, хоч не був без Божого Закону, а перебував у Законі Христа, щоби придбати тих, котрі без Закону.

to those who are without law, as without law (not being without [f]law toward God, but under [g]law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law;

22

Став я для немічних, як той немічний, щоб немічних здобути. Для всіх я став усім, щоб в усякому разі деяких спасти.

to the weak I became [h]as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

23

Усе це я роблю задля Радісної Звістки, щоб стати її співучасником.

Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.

24

Хіба не знаєте, що ті, які біжать на змаганнях, вони всі біжать, але нагороду одержує один? Тож біжіть, щоб і ви її здобули!

Striving for a Crown

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may [i]obtain it.

25

Кожний, хто змагається, стримується від усього. Вони, — щоб одержати тлінний вінець, ми, — щоб нетлінний.

And everyone who competes for the prize [j]is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.

26

Тому я не біжу в непевності та веду кулачний бій не так, аби тільки бити повітря.

Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air.

27

Але я виснажливо вправляюся і приборкую своє тіло, щоби, проповідуючи іншим, самому не виявитися недостойним.

But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
