Titus 1

Greeting

Paul, a servanta of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness,

in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages beganb

Він же свого часу об’явив Своє Слово проповіддю, яка була доручена мені за наказом нашого Спасителя Бога, —

and at the proper time manifested in his wordc through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;

до Тита, справжнього сина за спільною вірою: благодать і мир від Бога Отця і [Господа] Ісуса Христа, нашого Спасителя.

To Titus, my true child in a common faith:
Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Для того я залишив тебе на Криті, щоб ти впорядкував недокінчене й наставив пресвітерів у містах, як я тобі звелів:

Qualifications for Elders

This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you —

коли хто бездоганний, є чоловіком однієї дружини, має віруючих дітей, не звинувачених у розпусті чи в неслухняності.

if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife,d and his children are believerse and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination.

Бо треба, щоб єпископ — як Божий управитель — був бездоганний, не гордий, не гнівливий, не п’яниця, не задерикуватий, не користолюбець,

For an overseer,f as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain,

але гостинний, який любить добро, мудрий, справедливий, побожний, стриманий,

but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.

який дотримується вірних принципів згідно з ученням, аби був здатний потішати здоровим навчанням і переконувати противників.

He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in soundg doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

Тому що є багато таких, які не коряться, пустослівних і обманщиків, особливо з обрізаних,

For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party.h

яким треба затуляти рота, бо вони руйнують цілі сім’ї, навчаючи того, чого не слід, задля ганебної наживи.

They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.

Сказав один із них — їхній власний пророк: Критяни — постійні брехуни, люті звірі, ліниві ненажери.

One of the Cretans,i a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”j

Це свідчення правдиве. Із цієї причини викривай їх нещадно, аби ставали здоровими у вірі,

This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,

не приймаючи ні юдейських небилиць, ні заповідей людей, які відвертаються від істини.

not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth.

[Адже] для чистих — усе чисте, а для нечистих і невірних ніщо не є чистим, оскільки в них нечистий і розум, і сумління.

To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled.

Вони стверджують, що знають Бога, та вчинками відрікаються, будучи мерзенними й непокірними, нездатними до жодного доброго діла.

They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.
