І промовив Господь до Самуїла: Тож доки ти плакатимеш над Саулом? Я знехтував ним, щоб він не царював над Ізраїлем! Наповни твій ріг олією! Іди, Я пошлю тебе до Єссея аж до Вифлеєму, бо Я побачив між його синами Собі одного, щоб царював.
Samuel Goes to Bethlehem
Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have selected a king for Myself among his sons.”
Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have selected a king for Myself among his sons.”
А Самуїл відповів: Як я піду? — почує Саул, то він вб’є мене! Та Господь сказав: Візьми телицю з рогатої худоби у твою руку і скажеш: Іду принести жертву Господу.
But Samuel said, “How can I go? When Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” And the LORD said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’
А на жертву покличеш Єссея, і Я об’явлю тобі, що вчиниш, і помажеш того, на кого тобі вкажу!
“You shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for Me the one whom I designate to you.”
І вчинив Самуїл усе, що йому сказав Господь, і прийшов до Вифлеєму. І жахнулися старійшини міста зустріччю з ним, і сказали: Мир входу твоєму, видючий!
So Samuel did what the LORD said, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, “Do you come in peace?”
І він відповів: Мир! Приходжу принести жертву для Господа, освятіться і розвеселіться сьогодні зі мною! Він освятив Єссея та його синів і покликав їх на жертву.
He said, “In peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” He also consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
І сталося, коли входили вони, він побачив Еліява і сказав: Дійсно перед Господом його помазаник!
When they entered, he looked at Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’S anointed is before Him.”
Та Господь сказав Самуїлові: Не зважай на його вигляд, ні на його величну поставу, бо Я ним знехтував, тому що Бог не дивиться так, як дивиться людина. Адже людина дивиться на обличчя, а Бог дивиться на серце!
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
Наступним Єссей покликав Амінадава, і він прийшов перед обличчя Самуїла. Та він сказав: І цього Господь не вибрав.
Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
І привів Єссей Саму, та сказав: І цього Господь не вибрав.
Next Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
І Єссей провів своїх сімох синів перед Самуїлом. Та Самуїл сказав: Жодного із цих Господь не вибрав.
Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen these.”
І Самуїл запитав Єссея: Чи немає в тебе більше дітей? А той сказав: Ось ще найменший пасе стадо! І сказав Самуїл Єссеєві: Пошли і візьми його, бо не матимемо спочинку, аж доки він не прийде!
And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are these all the children?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and behold, he is tending the sheep.” Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.”
Тож він послав і привів його. А цей рижий з гарними очима і добрий в очах Господа. І промовив Господь до Самуїла: Встань і помаж Давида, бо він є добрим!
David Anointed
So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is he.”
І Самуїл взяв ріг олії, і помазав його серед його братів, і Господній Дух перебував над Давидом від того дня й надалі. А Самуїл піднявся і пішов до Арматаїма.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
А від Саула Господній Дух відійшов, і на нього давив поганий дух від Господа.
Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD terrorized him.
І слуги Саула звернулися до нього: Ось поганий дух від Господа на тебе давить.
Saul’s servants then said to him, “Behold now, an evil spirit from God is terrorizing you.
Хай твої раби, які перед тобою, переговорять і хай пошукають нашому володареві того, хто обізнаний з гуслами, і буде грати, — він гратиме на своїх гуслах, коли на тобі буде поганий дух, і тобі стане добре, і тебе заспокоїть.
“Let our lord now command your servants who are before you. Let them seek a man who is a skillful player on the harp; and it shall come about when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he shall play the harp with his hand, and you will be well.”
І Саул сказав до своїх слуг: Пошукайте мені того, хто добре грає, і приведете його до мене!
So Saul said to his servants, “Provide for me now a man who can play well and bring him to me.”
А один із його слуг відповів, кажучи: Ось я побачив сина Єссея, вифлеємця, — він знає гусла, чоловік розумний, військовий чоловік і мудрий словом. Та й на вигляд чоловік той гарний, і Господь з ним.
Then one of the young men said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is a skillful musician, a mighty man of valor, a warrior, one prudent in speech, and a handsome man; and the LORD is with him.”
Тоді Саул послав послів до Єссея, кажучи: Пришли до мене твого сина Давида, який біля твого стада!
So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David who is with the flock.”
І Єссей взяв ґомор хліба, міх вина і одне козеня з кіз, і послав Саулові через свого сина Давида.
Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread and a jug of wine and a young goat, and sent them to Saul by David his son.
Тож Давид прибув до Саула і постав перед ним. І він його дуже полюбив, і той став у нього зброєносцем.
Then David came to Saul and attended him; and Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor bearer.
І послав Саул до Єссея, переказуючи: Нехай стане Давид переді мною, бо знайшов милість у моїх очах!
Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David now stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”
І бувало, коли поганий дух находив на Саула, то Давид брав гусла і грав своєю рукою, і Саул заспокоювався, йому ставало добре, і поганий дух відступав від нього.
So it came about whenever the evil spirit from God came to Saul, David would take the harp and play it with his hand; and Saul would be refreshed and be well, and the evil spirit would depart from him.
