Jacob Leaves Secretly for Canaan
Now Jacob heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s, and from what belonged to our father he has made all this wealth.”

Jakob sah an Labans Gesicht: Er war ihm nicht mehr zugetan wie gestern und vorgestern.
Jacob saw the attitude of Laban, and behold, it was not friendly toward him as formerly.
Da sagte der HERR zu Jakob: Kehr zurück in das Land deiner Väter und zu deiner Verwandtschaft! Ich werde mit dir sein.
Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”
Jakob ließ Rahel und Lea auf das Feld zu seiner Herde rufen
So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to his flock in the field,
und sagte zu ihnen: Ich sehe am Gesicht eures Vaters, dass er mir nicht mehr zugetan ist wie gestern und vorgestern. Aber der Gott meines Vaters war mit mir.
and said to them, “I see your father’s attitude, that it is not friendly toward me as formerly, but the God of my father has been with me.
Ihr wisst, dass ich mit allen Kräften eurem Vater gedient habe.
“You know that I have served your father with all my strength.
Aber euer Vater hat mich hintergangen und meinen Lohn zehnmal geändert; Gott aber hat ihm nicht erlaubt, mich zu schädigen.
“Yet your father has cheated me and changed my wages ten times; however, God did not allow him to hurt me.
Sagte er, die Gesprenkelten sollen dein Lohn sein, dann warfen alle Tiere gesprenkelte Junge; sagte er, die Gestreiften sollen dein Lohn sein, dann warfen alle Tiere gestreifte Junge.
“If he spoke thus, ‘The speckled shall be your wages,’ then all the flock brought forth speckled; and if he spoke thus, ‘The striped shall be your wages,’ then all the flock brought forth striped.
Gott hat eurem Vater den Viehbestand entzogen und ihn mir gegeben.
“Thus God has taken away your father’s livestock and given them to me.
Zur Zeit, da die Tiere brünstig waren, erhob ich meine Augen und hatte einen Traum: Siehe, gestreifte, gesprenkelte und gefleckte Böcke besprangen die Tiere.
“And it came about at the time when the flock were mating that I lifted up my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, the male goats which were mating were striped, speckled, and mottled.
Der Engel Gottes sprach im Traum zu mir: Jakob! Ich antwortete: Hier bin ich.
“Then the angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob,’ and I said, ‘Here I am.’
Dann sprach er: Erhebe doch deine Augen und schau hin: Alle Böcke, welche die Tiere bespringen, sind gestreift, gesprenkelt oder gefleckt. Ich habe nämlich alles gesehen, was dir Laban antut.
“He said, ‘Lift up now your eyes and see that all the male goats which are mating are striped, speckled, and mottled; for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.
Ich bin der Gott von Bet-El, wo du das Steinmal gesalbt und mir ein Gelübde gemacht hast. Jetzt steh auf, zieh fort aus diesem Land und kehr in das Land deiner Verwandtschaft zurück!
‘I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar, where you made a vow to Me; now arise, leave this land, and return to the land of your birth.’”
Rahel und Lea antworteten und sagten ihm: Haben wir noch Anteil oder Erbe im Haus unseres Vaters?
Rachel and Leah said to him, “Do we still have any portion or inheritance in our father’s house?
Gelten wir ihm nicht wie Fremde? Er hat uns ja verkauft und sogar unser Geld restlos aufgezehrt.
“Are we not reckoned by him as foreigners? For he has sold us, and has also entirely consumed our purchase price.
Ja, der ganze Reichtum, den Gott unserem Vater entrissen hat — uns gehört er und unseren Söhnen. Jetzt tu alles, was Gott dir gesagt hat.
“Surely all the wealth which God has taken away from our father belongs to us and our children; now then, do whatever God has said to you.”
Da machte sich Jakob auf, hob seine Söhne und Frauen auf die Kamele
Then Jacob arose and put his children and his wives upon camels;
und führte sein ganzes Vieh fort, seinen ganzen Besitz an Vieh, den er in Paddan-Aram erworben hatte, um zu seinem Vater Isaak nach Kanaan zurückzukehren.
and he drove away all his livestock and all his property which he had gathered, his acquired livestock which he had gathered in Paddan-aram, to go to the land of Canaan to his father Isaac.
Laban war weggegangen, um seine Schafe zu scheren; da stahl Rahel die Götterbilder ihres Vaters
When Laban had gone to shear his flock, then Rachel stole the household idols that were her father’s.
und Jakob überlistete den Aramäer Laban: Er verriet ihm nicht, dass er fliehen wollte.
And Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was fleeing.
Er floh mit allem, was ihm gehörte. Er machte sich auf, überquerte den Strom und wandte sein Gesicht dem Gebirge von Gilead zu.
So he fled with all that he had; and he arose and crossed the Euphrates River, and set his face toward the hill country of Gilead.
Am dritten Tag meldete man Laban, Jakob sei geflohen.
Laban Pursues Jacob
When it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled,
Da nahm er seine Brüder mit sich, jagte ihm sieben Tage lang nach und kam ihm im Gebirge von Gilead ganz nahe.
then he took his kinsmen with him and pursued him a distance of seven days’ journey, and he overtook him in the hill country of Gilead.
Gott aber kam in einem nächtlichen Traum zum Aramäer Laban und sprach zu ihm: Hüte dich, Jakob auch nur das Geringste vorzuwerfen!
God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream of the night and said to him, “Be careful that you do not speak to Jacob either good or bad.”
Laban holte Jakob ein, als dieser gerade im Gebirge sein Zelt aufgeschlagen hatte. Da schlug auch Laban mit seinen Brüdern im Gebirge von Gilead die Zelte auf.
Laban caught up with Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban with his kinsmen camped in the hill country of Gilead.
Laban sagte nun zu Jakob: Was hast du getan? Du hast mich überlistet und meine Töchter wie Kriegsgefangene weggeführt.
Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done by deceiving me and carrying away my daughters like captives of the sword?
Warum bist du heimlich geflohen, hast mich bestohlen und mir nichts gesagt? Ich hätte dich gern mit einem Freudenfest, mit Gesang, Pauken und Leiern entlassen.
“Why did you flee secretly and deceive me, and did not tell me so that I might have sent you away with joy and with songs, with timbrel and with lyre;
Du hast mir aber nicht einmal gestattet, meine Söhne und Töchter zu küssen. Jetzt hast du töricht gehandelt.
and did not allow me to kiss my sons and my daughters? Now you have done foolishly.
Es stünde in meiner Macht, euch Schlimmes anzutun; aber der Gott eures Vaters hat mir gestern Nacht gesagt: Hüte dich, Jakob auch nur das Geringste vorzuwerfen!
“It is in my power to do you harm, but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘Be careful not to speak either good or bad to Jacob.’
Nun bist du fortgezogen, weil du Heimweh hattest nach deinem Vaterhaus. Aber warum hast du meine Götter gestohlen?
“Now you have indeed gone away because you longed greatly for your father’s house; but why did you steal my gods?”
Jakob antwortete und sagte zu Laban: Ja, ich fürchtete mich, denn ich meinte, du könntest mir deine Töchter wegnehmen.
Then Jacob replied to Laban, “Because I was afraid, for I thought that you would take your daughters from me by force.
Bei wem du aber deine Götter findest, der soll nicht am Leben bleiben. In Gegenwart unserer Brüder durchsuche, was ich habe, und nimm, was dein ist! Jakob wusste nicht, dass Rahel sie gestohlen hatte.
“The one with whom you find your gods shall not live; in the presence of our kinsmen point out what is yours among my belongings and take it for yourself.” For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.
Laban betrat das Zelt Jakobs, das Zelt der Lea und das der beiden Mägde, fand aber nichts. Vom Zelt der Lea ging er in das Zelt Rahels.
So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent and into the tent of the two maids, but he did not find them. Then he went out of Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent.
Rahel hatte die Götterbilder genommen, sie in die Satteltasche des Kamels gelegt und sich daraufgesetzt. Laban durchstöberte das ganze Zelt, fand aber nichts.
Now Rachel had taken the household idols and put them in the camel’s saddle, and she sat on them. And Laban felt through all the tent but did not find them.
Sie aber sagte zu ihrem Vater: Zürne nicht, mein Herr! Ich kann vor dir nicht aufstehen, es geht mir gerade, wie es eben Frauen ergeht. Er suchte weiter, die Götterbilder aber fand er nicht.
She said to her father, “Let not my lord be angry that I cannot rise before you, for the manner of women is upon me.” So he searched but did not find the household idols.
Da wurde Jakob zornig und begann mit Laban zu streiten. Jakob ergriff das Wort und sagte zu Laban: Was habe ich verbrochen, was habe ich Unrechtes getan, dass du mir nachhetzt?
Then Jacob became angry and contended with Laban; and Jacob said to Laban, “What is my transgression? What is my sin that you have hotly pursued me?
Alle meine Sachen hast du durchstöbert. Was hast du gefunden an Sachen, die zu deinem Haus gehören? Leg sie her vor meine und deine Brüder und sie sollen zwischen uns beiden entscheiden.
“Though you have felt through all my goods, what have you found of all your household goods? Set it here before my kinsmen and your kinsmen, that they may decide between us two.
Schon zwanzig Jahre bin ich bei dir. Deine Mutterschafe und Ziegen hatten keinen Fehlwurf. Die Böcke deiner Herde habe ich nicht aufgezehrt.
“These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten the rams of your flocks.
Gerissenes Vieh habe ich dir nicht gebracht; ich habe es selbst ersetzt. Aus meiner Hand hast du gefordert, was mir bei Tag oder Nacht gestohlen wurde.
“That which was torn of beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it myself. You required it of my hand whether stolen by day or stolen by night.
So ging es mir: Bei Tag fraß mich die Hitze, der Frost bei Nacht und der Schlaf floh meine Augen.
“Thus I was: by day the heat consumed me and the frost by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes.
Schon zwanzig Jahre diene ich in deinem Haus, vierzehn Jahre um deine beiden Töchter und sechs Jahre um dein Vieh. Du aber hast meinen Lohn zehnmal geändert.
“These twenty years I have been in your house; I served you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flock, and you changed my wages ten times.
Wäre nicht der Gott meines Vaters, der Gott Abrahams und der Schrecken Isaaks, für mich eingetreten, dann hättest du mich jetzt mit leeren Händen weggeschickt. Doch Gott hat mein Elend und die Mühe meiner Hände gesehen und gestern Nacht hat er entschieden.
“If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had not been for me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God has seen my affliction and the toil of my hands, so He rendered judgment last night.”
Laban antwortete und sprach zu Jakob: Die Töchter sind meine Töchter und die Söhne sind meine Söhne und das Vieh ist mein Vieh und alles, was du siehst, gehört mir. Was kann ich heute für meine Töchter tun oder für ihre Söhne, die sie geboren haben?
The Covenant of Mizpah
Then Laban replied to Jacob, “The daughters are my daughters, and the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks, and all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters or to their children whom they have borne?
Jetzt aber komm, wir wollen einen Bund schließen, ich und du. Er soll zwischen mir und dir Zeuge sein.
“So now come, let us make a covenant, you and I, and let it be a witness between you and me.”
Da nahm Jakob einen Stein und richtete ihn als Steinmal auf.
Then Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.
Jakob sagte zu seinen Brüdern: Tragt Steine zusammen! Da holten sie Steine und legten einen Steinhügel an. Dort auf dem Steinhügel aßen sie.
Jacob said to his kinsmen, “Gather stones.” So they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there by the heap.
Laban nannte ihn Jegar-Sahaduta und Jakob nannte ihn Gal-Ed.
Now Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob called it Galeed.
Dieser Steinhügel, sagte Laban, soll heute Zeuge sein zwischen mir und dir. Darum gab er ihm den Namen Gal-Ed — Zeugenhügel —
Laban said, “This heap is a witness between you and me this day.” Therefore it was named Galeed,
und Mizpa — Spähort — , weil er sagte: Der HERR sei Späher zwischen mir und dir, wenn wir voneinander nichts mehr wissen.
and Mizpah, for he said, “May the LORD watch between you and me when we are absent one from the other.
Solltest du meine Töchter unterdrücken oder dir außer meinen Töchtern noch andere Frauen nehmen — auch wenn kein Mensch bei uns ist: Sieh, Gott ist Zeuge zwischen mir und dir.
“If you mistreat my daughters, or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no man is with us, see, God is witness between you and me.”
Weiter sagte Laban zu Jakob: Siehe, dieser Steinhügel, siehe, dieses Steinmal, das ich zwischen mir und dir errichtet habe —
Laban said to Jacob, “Behold this heap and behold the pillar which I have set between you and me.
Zeuge sei dieser Steinhügel. Zeuge sei dieses Steinmal: Nie will ich diesen Steinhügel zu dir hin überschreiten und nie sollst du diesen Steinhügel oder dieses Steinmal in böser Absicht zu mir hin überschreiten.
“This heap is a witness, and the pillar is a witness, that I will not pass by this heap to you for harm, and you will not pass by this heap and this pillar to me, for harm.
Der Gott Abrahams und der Gott Nahors, der Gott unserer Väter, seien Richter zwischen uns. Da leistete Jakob einen Eid beim Schrecken seines Vaters Isaak.
“The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” So Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.
