Elijah Confronts Ahab
After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.”

Da ging Elija hin, um sich Ahab zu zeigen. Die Hungersnot war groß in Samaria.
So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria.
Daher rief Ahab den Palastvorsteher Obadja. Dieser war sehr gottesfürchtig.
And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly,

and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.)
Ahab befahl nun Obadja: Geh an alle Wasserquellen und Bäche im Land! Vielleicht finden wir Gras, damit wir Pferde und Maultiere am Leben erhalten können und nicht einen Teil des Viehs töten müssen.
And Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.”
Sie teilten sich das Land, um es zu durchstreifen. Ahab ging in die eine und Obadja in die andere Richtung.
So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself.
Als nun Obadja unterwegs war, kam ihm Elija entgegen. Obadja erkannte ihn, warf sich vor ihm nieder und rief: Bist du es, mein Herr Elija?
And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. And Obadiah recognized him and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”
Dieser antwortete: Ich bin es. Geh und melde deinem Herrn: Elija ist da.
And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’”
Obadja entgegnete: Was habe ich mir zuschulden kommen lassen, dass du deinen Knecht an Ahab ausliefern und dem Tod preisgeben willst?
And he said, “How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?
So wahr der HERR, dein Gott, lebt: Es gibt kein Volk und kein Reich, wo mein Herr dich nicht hätte suchen lassen. Und wenn man sagte: Er ist nicht hier, dann ließ er dieses Reich oder Volk schwören, dass man dich nicht gefunden habe.
As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they would say, ‘He is not here,’ he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you.
Und jetzt befiehlst du: Geh und melde deinem Herrn: Elija ist da.
And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’
Wenn ich nun von dir weggehe, könnte ja der Geist des HERRN dich an einen Ort tragen, den ich nicht kenne. Käme ich dann zu Ahab, um dich zu melden, und könnte er dich nicht finden, so würde er mich töten. Dabei hat dein Knecht doch von Jugend auf den HERRN gefürchtet.
And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you I know not where. And so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the Lord from my youth.
Hat man dir denn nicht berichtet, was ich getan habe, als Isebel die Propheten des HERRN umbrachte? Ich habe doch hundert von ihnen, je fünfzig in einer Höhle, verborgen und mit Brot und Wasser versorgt.
Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I hid a hundred men of the Lord’s prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water?
Und nun befiehlst du: Geh und melde deinem Herrn: Elija ist da. Ahab würde mich töten.
And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”’; and he will kill me.”
Doch Elija antwortete: So wahr der HERR der Heerscharen lebt, in dessen Dienst ich stehe: Heute noch werde ich ihm vor die Augen treten.
And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”
Obadja kam zu Ahab und brachte ihm die Nachricht. Ahab ging Elija entgegen.
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.
Sobald er ihn sah, rief er aus: Bist du es, Verderber Israels?
When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?”
Elija entgegnete: Nicht ich habe Israel ins Verderben gestürzt, sondern du und das Haus deines Vaters, weil ihr die Gebote des HERRN übertreten habt und du den Baalen nachgelaufen bist.
And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the Lord and followed the Baals.
Doch schick jetzt Boten aus und versammle mir ganz Israel auf dem Karmel, auch die vierhundertfünfzig Propheten des Baal und die vierhundert Propheten der Aschera, die vom Tisch Isebels essen!
Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
Ahab schickte in ganz Israel umher und ließ die Propheten auf dem Karmel zusammenkommen.
The Prophets of Baal Defeated
So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.

Und Elija trat vor das ganze Volk und rief: Wie lange noch schwankt ihr nach zwei Seiten? Wenn der HERR der wahre Gott ist, dann folgt ihm! Wenn aber Baal es ist, dann folgt diesem! Doch das Volk gab ihm keine Antwort.
And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word.
Da sagte Elija zum Volk: Ich allein bin als Prophet des HERRN übrig geblieben; die Propheten des Baal aber sind vierhundertfünfzig.
Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal’s prophets are 450 men.
Man gebe uns zwei Stiere. Sie sollen sich einen auswählen, ihn zerteilen und auf das Holz legen, aber kein Feuer anzünden. Ich werde den andern zubereiten, auf das Holz legen und kein Feuer anzünden.
Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood and put no fire to it.
Dann sollt ihr den Namen eures Gottes anrufen und ich werde den Namen des HERRN anrufen. Der Gott, der mit Feuer antwortet, ist der wahre Gott. Da rief das ganze Volk: Der Vorschlag ist gut.
And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire, he is God.” And all the people answered, “It is well spoken.”
Nun sagte Elija zu den Propheten des Baal: Wählt ihr zuerst den einen Stier aus und bereitet ihn zu; denn ihr seid die Mehrheit. Ruft dann den Namen eures Gottes an, entzündet aber kein Feuer!
Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it.”
Sie nahmen den Stier, den er ihnen überließ, und bereiteten ihn zu. Dann riefen sie vom Morgen bis zum Mittag den Namen des Baal an und schrien: Baal, erhöre uns! Doch es kam kein Laut und niemand gab Antwort. Sie tanzten hüpfend um den Altar, den man gemacht hatte.
And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made.
Um die Mittagszeit verspottete sie Elija und sagte: Ruft lauter! Er ist doch Gott. Er könnte beschäftigt sein, könnte beiseitegegangen oder verreist sein. Vielleicht schläft er und wacht dann auf.
And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”
Sie schrien nun mit lauter Stimme. Nach ihrem Brauch ritzten sie sich mit Schwertern und Lanzen wund, bis das Blut an ihnen herabfloss.
And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them.
Als der Mittag vorüber war, verfielen sie in Raserei und das dauerte bis zu der Zeit, da man das Speiseopfer darzubringen pflegt. Doch es kam kein Laut, keine Antwort, keine Erhörung.
And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.
Nun forderte Elija das ganze Volk auf: Tretet her zu mir! Sie kamen und Elija baute den zerstörten Altar des HERRN wieder auf.
Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been thrown down.
Er nahm zwölf Steine, nach der Zahl der Stämme der Söhne Jakobs, zu dem der HERR gesagt hatte: Israel soll dein Name sein.
Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name,”
Er fügte die Steine zu einem Altar für den Namen des HERRN, zog rings um den Altar einen Graben und grenzte eine Fläche ab, die zwei Sea Saat hätte aufnehmen können.
Sodann schichtete er das Holz auf, zerteilte den Stier und legte ihn auf das Holz.
And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.”
Nun befahl er: Füllt vier Krüge mit Wasser und gießt es über das Brandopfer und das Holz! Hierauf sagte er: Tut es noch einmal! Und sie wiederholten es. Dann sagte er: Tut es zum dritten Mal! Und sie taten es zum dritten Mal.
And he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time.
Das Wasser lief rings um den Altar. Auch den Graben füllte er mit Wasser.
And the water ran around the altar and filled the trench also with water.
Zu der Zeit nun, da man das Speiseopfer darzubringen pflegt, trat der Prophet Elija an den Altar und rief: HERR, Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Israels, heute soll man erkennen, dass du Gott bist in Israel, dass ich dein Knecht bin und all das in deinem Auftrag tue.
And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.
Erhöre mich, HERR, erhöre mich! Dieses Volk soll erkennen, dass du, HERR, der wahre Gott bist und dass du sein Herz zur Umkehr wendest.
Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.”
Da kam das Feuer des HERRN herab und verzehrte das Brandopfer, das Holz, die Steine und die Erde. Auch das Wasser im Graben leckte es auf.
Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
Das ganze Volk sah es, warf sich auf das Angesicht nieder und rief: Der HERR ist Gott, der HERR ist Gott!
And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.”
Elija aber befahl ihnen: Ergreift die Propheten des Baal! Keiner von ihnen soll entkommen. Man ergriff sie und Elija ließ sie zum Bach Kischon hinabführen und dort töten.
And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there.
Dann sagte Elija zu Ahab: Geh hinauf, iss und trink; denn das Rauschen des Regens ist schon hörbar.
The Lord Sends Rain
And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.”
And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.”
Während Ahab wegging, um zu essen und zu trinken, stieg Elija zur Höhe des Karmel empor, kauerte sich auf den Boden nieder und legte seinen Kopf zwischen die Knie.
So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel. And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees.
Dann befahl er seinem Diener: Geh hinauf und schau auf das Meer hinaus! Dieser ging hinauf schaute hinaus und meldete: Es ist nichts zu sehen. Elija befahl: Geh sieben Mal hinauf!
And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” And he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go again,” seven times.
Beim siebten Mal meldete der Diener: Eine Wolke, klein wie eine Menschenhand, steigt aus dem Meer herauf. Darauf sagte Elija: Geh hinauf und sag zu Ahab: Spanne an und fahr hinab, damit der Regen dich nicht aufhält!
And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’”
Es dauerte nicht lange, da verfinsterte sich der Himmel durch Sturm und Wolken und es fiel ein starker Regen. Ahab bestieg den Wagen und fuhr nach Jesreel.
And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.
