And the king went up to the house of the Lord, and with him all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the prophets, all the people, both small and great. And he read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the Lord.
Dann trat der König an die Säule und schloss vor dem HERRN diesen Bund: Er wolle dem HERRN folgen, seine Gebote, Bundeszeugnisse und Satzungen von ganzem Herzen und ganzer Seele bewahren und die Worte des Bundes einhalten, die in diesem Buch niedergeschrieben sind. Das ganze Volk trat dem Bund bei.
And the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people joined in the covenant.
Hierauf befahl der König dem Hohepriester Hilkija, den Priestern des zweiten Ranges und den Wächtern an den Schwellen, alle Gegenstände aus dem Tempel des HERRN hinauszuschaffen, die für den Baal, die Aschera und das ganze Heer des Himmels angefertigt worden waren. And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest and the priests of the second order and the keepers of the threshold to bring out of the temple of the Lord all the vessels made for Baal, for Asherah, and for all the host of heaven. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron and carried their ashes to Bethel.

And he brought out the Asherah from the house of the Lord, outside Jerusalem, to the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron and beat it to dust and cast the dust of it upon the graves of the common people.

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had made offerings, from Geba to Beersheba. And he broke down the high places of the gates that were at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on one’s left at the gate of the city.

Er entfernte die Pferde, die die Könige von Juda zu Ehren der Sonne am Eingang zum Haus des HERRN bei der Zelle des Kämmerers Netan-Melech am Parwar aufgestellt hatten, und verbrannte die Sonnenwagen im Feuer.
Auch die Altäre, die die Könige von Juda auf dem Dach über dem Obergemach des Ahas errichtet hatten, sowie die Altäre, die Manasse in den beiden Höfen des Tempels aufgestellt hatte, ließ der König abbrechen. Er schlug sie dort in Trümmer und warf ihren Schutt in das Kidrontal.
Desgleichen entweihte der König die Kulthöhen östlich von Jerusalem, südlich vom Berg des Verderbens, die Salomo, der König von Israel, für Astarte, die Göttin der Sidonier, für Kemosch, den Götzen der Moabiter, und für Milkom, den Gräuel der Ammoniter, erbaut hatte.
And the king defiled the high places that were east of Jerusalem, to the south of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians, and for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
Er zerbrach die Steinmale, hieb die Kultpfähle um und füllte ihre Stätten mit Menschenknochen.
And he broke in pieces the pillars and cut down the Asherim and filled their places with the bones of men.
Auch den Altar von Bet-El, die Kulthöhe, die Jerobeam, der Sohn Nebats, der Verführer Israels, errichtet hatte, auch diesen Altar zerstörte er samt der Kulthöhe. Er steckte das Höhenheiligtum in Brand, zermalmte die Steine zu Staub und verbrannte den Kultpfahl.
Als Joschija sich umwandte und die Gräber sah, die dort auf dem Berg waren, ließ er die Gebeine aus ihnen nehmen und auf dem Altar verbrennen. So machte er ihn unrein gemäß dem Wort des HERRN, das der Gottesmann ausgerufen hatte, der diese Drohung aussprach.
And as Josiah turned, he saw the tombs there on the mount. And he sent and took the bones out of the tombs and burned them on the altar and defiled it, according to the word of the Lord that the man of God proclaimed, who had predicted these things.
Und als dann der König fragte: Was ist das für ein Denkmal, das ich hier sehe?, antworteten ihm die Männer der Stadt: Das ist das Grab des Gottesmannes, der aus Juda gekommen war und vorausgesagt hatte, was du am Altar von Bet-El getan hast.
Da befahl er: Lasst ihn ruhen! Niemand soll seine Gebeine berühren. So ließ man seine Gebeine samt den Gebeinen des Propheten, der aus Samaria stammte, ungestört.
And he said, “Let him be; let no man move his bones.” So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet who came out of Samaria.
Auch beseitigte Joschija alle Höhentempel in den Städten Samariens, die die Könige von Israel errichtet und durch die sie den HERRN erzürnt hatten. Er verfuhr mit ihnen so, wie er es in Bet-El getan hatte.
And Josiah removed all the shrines also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which kings of Israel had made, provoking the Lord to anger. He did to them according to all that he had done at Bethel.
Alle Höhenpriester, die dort waren, ließ er auf den Altären hinschlachten und Menschengebeine auf den Altären verbrennen. Darauf kehrte er nach Jerusalem zurück.
And he sacrificed all the priests of the high places who were there, on the altars, and burned human bones on them. Then he returned to Jerusalem.
Nun befahl der König dem ganzen Volk: Feiert das Pessachfest zur Ehre des HERRN, eures Gottes, wie es in diesem Bundesbuch vorgeschrieben ist!
Josiah Restores the Passover

Ein solches Pessach war nämlich nicht gefeiert worden seit den Tagen der Richter, die Israel regierten, auch nicht in der ganzen Zeit der Könige von Israel und Juda.
For no such Passover had been kept since the days of the judges who judged Israel, or during all the days of the kings of Israel or of the kings of Judah.
Erst im achtzehnten Jahr des Königs Joschija wurde dieses Pessach zur Ehre des HERRN in Jerusalem begangen.
But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah this Passover was kept to the Lord in Jerusalem.
Auch die Totenbeschwörer und Zeichendeuter, die Hausgötter, Götzen und alle Gräuel, die im Land Juda und in Jerusalem zu sehen waren, fegte Joschija hinweg. So führte er die Worte der Weisung aus, die in dem Buch niedergeschrieben waren, das der Priester Hilkija im Haus des HERRN gefunden hatte.
Moreover, Josiah put away the mediums and the necromancers and the household gods and the idols and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might establish the words of the law that were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the Lord.
Es gab vor ihm keinen König, der so mit ganzem Herzen, mit ganzer Seele und mit all seinen Kräften zum HERRN umkehrte und so getreu die Weisung des Mose befolgte, und auch nach ihm war keiner wie er.
Before him there was no king like him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses, nor did any like him arise after him.
Doch der HERR ließ von der gewaltigen Glut seines Zornes nicht ab. Sein Zorn war über Juda entbrannt wegen all der Kränkungen, die Manasse ihm zugefügt hatte.
Still the Lord did not turn from the burning of his great wrath, by which his anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked him.
Darum sprach der HERR: Auch Juda will ich von meinem Angesicht entfernen, wie ich Israel entfernt habe. Ich verwerfe diese Stadt Jerusalem, die ich erwählt habe, und das Haus, von dem ich gesagt habe: Hier wird mein Name sein.
And the Lord said, “I will remove Judah also out of my sight, as I have removed Israel, and I will cast off this city that I have chosen, Jerusalem, and the house of which I said, My name shall be there.”

In seinen Tagen unternahm der Pharao Necho, der König von Ägypten, einen Kriegszug gegen den König von Assur an den Eufrat. König Joschija stellte sich ihm entgegen. Doch der Pharao tötete ihn bei Megiddo, sobald er ihn sah.
In his days Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt went up to the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates. King Josiah went to meet him, and Pharaoh Neco killed him at Megiddo, as soon as he saw him.
Die Diener Joschijas hoben den Toten auf einen Wagen, brachten ihn von Megiddo weg nach Jerusalem und begruben ihn in seinem Grab. Dann nahmen die Bürger des Landes Joahas, den Sohn Joschijas, salbten ihn und machten ihn zum König an seines Vaters Stelle.
And his servants carried him dead in a chariot from Megiddo and brought him to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and anointed him, and made him king in his father’s place.

Genau wie seine Väter tat er, was böse war in den Augen des HERRN.
And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his fathers had done.
Doch der Pharao Necho nahm ihn als König von Jerusalem zu Ribla im Land Hamat gefangen und legte dem Land eine Geldbuße von hundert Talenten Silber und einem Talent Gold auf.
Dann machte der Pharao Necho Eljakim, den Sohn Joschijas, anstelle seines Vaters Joschija zum König und änderte seinen Namen in Jojakim. Joahas aber nahm er fest und brachte ihn nach Ägypten, wo er starb.
And Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the place of Josiah his father, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. But he took Jehoahaz away, and he came to Egypt and died there.
Jojakim lieferte dem Pharao das Silber und das Gold ab. Doch musste er das Land besteuern, um das Geld aufbringen zu können, das der Pharao forderte. Nach dem Vermögen eines jeden Bürgers trieb er von den Bürgern des Landes das Silber und das Gold ein, um es an den Pharao Necho abzuliefern.
And Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh, but he taxed the land to give the money according to the command of Pharaoh. He exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land, from everyone according to his assessment, to give it to Pharaoh Neco.
Jojakim war fünfundzwanzig Jahre alt, als er König wurde, und regierte elf Jahre in Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Sebuda und war eine Tochter Pedajas aus Ruma.
