Ezekiel as Israel's Watchman
Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

Menschensohn, sprich zu den Söhnen deines Volkes und sag zu ihnen: Wenn ich über ein Land das Schwert kommen lasse und das Volk des Landes aus seiner Mitte einen Mann nimmt und ihn zu seinem Wächter macht
Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman:
und wenn er das Schwert über das Land kommen sieht, in das Widderhorn bläst und das Volk warnt
If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;
und jemand den Schall des Widderhorns zwar hört, sich aber nicht warnen lässt, sodass das Schwert kommt und ihn dahinrafft, dann wird sein Blut auf seinem Haupt sein.
Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
Er hat den Schall des Widderhorns zwar gehört, sich aber nicht warnen lassen; sein Blut wird auf ihm sein. Wenn er sich jedoch warnen lässt, hat er sein Leben gerettet.
He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul.
Wenn aber der Wächter das Schwert kommen sieht und nicht in das Widderhorn bläst und das Volk nicht gewarnt wird und wenn das Schwert kommt und einen von ihnen dahinrafft, dann wird dieser zwar wegen seiner eigenen Schuld dahingerafft, sein Blut aber fordere ich aus der Hand des Wächters zurück.
But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.
Du aber, Menschensohn, ich habe dich dem Haus Israel als Wächter gegeben; wenn du ein Wort aus meinem Mund hörst, musst du sie vor mir warnen.
So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.
Wenn ich zum Schuldigen sage: Schuldiger, du musst sterben! und wenn du nicht redest, um den Schuldigen vor seinem Weg zu warnen, dann wird dieser Schuldige seiner Sünde wegen sterben; sein Blut aber fordere ich aus deiner Hand zurück.
When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Du aber, wenn du einen Schuldigen vor seinem Weg gewarnt hast, damit er umkehrt, und er sich nicht abkehrt von seinem Weg, dann wird er seiner Sünde wegen sterben; du aber hast dein Leben gerettet.
Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
Du aber, Menschensohn, sag zum Haus Israel: So sprecht ihr: Fürwahr, unsere Vergehen und unsere Sünden lasten auf uns, in ihnen siechen wir dahin. Wie sollen wir da am Leben bleiben?
The Message of the Watchman
Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live?

Sag zu ihnen: So wahr ich lebe — Spruch GOTTES, des Herrn — , ich habe kein Gefallen am Tod des Schuldigen, sondern daran, dass ein Schuldiger sich abkehrt von seinem Weg und am Leben bleibt. Kehrt um, kehrt euch ab von euren bösen Wegen! Warum denn wollt ihr sterben, ihr vom Haus Israel?
Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
Du aber, Menschensohn, sag zu den Söhnen deines Volkes: Die Gerechtigkeit des Gerechten wird ihn nicht retten am Tage seines Vergehens. Und die Schuld des Schuldigen: Er wird durch sie nicht zu Fall kommen am Tag seiner Abkehr von seiner Schuld. Der Gerechte aber kann trotz seiner Gerechtigkeit nicht am Leben bleiben, sobald er sündigt.
Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.
Wenn ich zu dem Gerechten sage: Er wird gewiss am Leben bleiben!, er aber im Vertrauen auf seine Gerechtigkeit Unrecht tut, dann wird ihm seine ganze Gerechtigkeit nicht angerechnet. Wegen seines Unrechts, das er getan hat, deshalb muss er sterben.
When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.
Wenn ich aber zu dem Schuldigen sage: Du musst sterben! und er kehrt sich von seiner Sünde ab und handelt nach Recht und Gerechtigkeit,
Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right;
gibt der Schuldige das Pfand zurück, ersetzt er Geraubtes, geht er in den Satzungen des Lebens, und tut er kein Unrecht mehr, dann wird er gewiss am Leben bleiben und nicht sterben.
If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.
Keine seiner Sünden, die er begangen hat, wird ihm angerechnet. Er hat nach Recht und Gerechtigkeit gehandelt, er wird gewiss am Leben bleiben.
None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live.
Die Söhne deines Volkes aber sagen: Der Weg des Herrn ist nicht richtig. Dabei sind sie es, deren Weg nicht richtig ist.
Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal.
Wenn ein Gerechter sich abkehrt von seiner Gerechtigkeit und Unrecht tut, muss er dafür sterben.
When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby.
Und wenn ein Schuldiger sich von seiner Schuld abkehrt und nach Recht und Gerechtigkeit handelt, so wird dieser deswegen Leben haben.
But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby.
Ihr aber sagt: Der Weg des Herrn ist nicht richtig. Ich werde euch richten, ihr vom Haus Israel, einen jeden nach seinem Weg.
Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.
Und es geschah im zwölften Jahr, am fünften Tag des zehnten Monats nach unserer Verschleppung, da kam ein Entronnener aus Jerusalem zu mir und sagte: Die Stadt ist gefallen.
Explanation of Jerusalem's Fall
And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one that had escaped out of Jerusalem came unto me, saying, The city is smitten.

Die Hand des HERRN legte sich auf mich am Abend, bevor der Entronnene eintraf, und ehe dieser am Morgen zu mir kam, öffnete er meinen Mund. So wurde mein Mund geöffnet und ich war nicht mehr stumm.
Now the hand of the LORD was upon me in the evening, afore he that was escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb.
Menschensohn, die Bewohner dieser Ruinen auf dem Ackerboden Israels sagen: Einer nur war Abraham und er nahm das Land in Besitz; wir aber sind viele. Umso mehr ist das Land uns zum Besitz gegeben.
Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance.
Deshalb sag zu ihnen: So spricht GOTT, der Herr: Ihr esst Fleisch mitsamt dem Blut, ihr blickt zu euren Götzen auf und vergießt Blut. Und ihr wollt das Land in Besitz nehmen?
Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land?
Ihr setzt auf euer Schwert, begeht Gräueltaten und einer schändet die Frau des andern. Und ihr wollt das Land in Besitz nehmen?
Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbour's wife: and shall ye possess the land?
So sag zu ihnen: So spricht GOTT, der Herr: So wahr ich lebe, wer in den Ruinen ist, fällt unter dem Schwert, wer auf dem freien Feld ist, den werfe ich den wilden Tieren zum Fraß vor, und wer sich in den Burgen und Höhlen aufhält, stirbt an der Pest.
Say thou thus unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; As I live, surely they that are in the wastes shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that be in the forts and in the caves shall die of the pestilence.
Ich mache das Land zur Wüste und Öde; seine stolze Macht hat ein Ende; die Berge Israels veröden, sodass niemand mehr durchreist.
For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through.
Dann werden sie erkennen, dass ich der HERR bin, wenn ich das Land zur Wüste und Öde mache wegen all der Gräueltaten, die sie begangen haben.
Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.
Du, Menschensohn, die Söhne deines Volkes reden über dich an den Mauern und Toren der Häuser. Einer sagt zum andern, jeder zu seinem Bruder: Kommt doch und hört, was für ein Wort vom HERRN ausgeht.
Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.
Dann kommen sie zu dir wie bei einem Volksauflauf, setzen sich vor dich hin — mein Volk! — und hören deine Worte an, aber sie handeln nicht danach; denn ihr Mund ist voller Verlangen und so handeln sie auch und ihr Herz läuft nur ihrem Gewinn hinterher.
And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.
Siehe, du bist für sie wie ein Liebeslied, eine wohlklingende Stimme und ein schönes Harfenspiel. Sie hören deine Worte, aber sie handeln nicht danach.
And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
