Ich danke meinem Gott jedes Mal, sooft ich eurer gedenke;
I thank my God in all my remembrance of you,

always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all,

in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now.

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
Es ist nur recht, dass ich so über euch alle denke, weil ich euch ins Herz geschlossen habe. Denn ihr alle habt Anteil an der Gnade, die mir durch meine Gefangenschaft und die Verteidigung und Bekräftigung des Evangeliums gewährt ist.
For it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of grace with me.
Denn Gott ist mein Zeuge, wie ich mich nach euch allen sehne im Erbarmen Christi Jesu.
For God is my witness, how I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.
Und ich bete darum, dass eure Liebe immer noch reicher an Einsicht und jedem Verständnis wird,
And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment,
damit ihr beurteilen könnt, worauf es ankommt. Dann werdet ihr rein und ohne Tadel sein für den Tag Christi,
so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ;
erfüllt mit der Frucht der Gerechtigkeit, die durch Jesus Christus kommt, zur Ehre und zum Lob Gottes.
having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Ich will aber, dass ihr wisst, Brüder und Schwestern, dass alles, was mir zugestoßen ist, die Verbreitung des Evangeliums gefördert hat.
The Gospel Is Preached
Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel,
Denn im ganzen Prätorium und bei allen Übrigen ist offenbar geworden, dass ich meine Fesseln um Christi willen trage,
so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else,
und die meisten der Brüder sind durch meine Gefangenschaft zuversichtlich geworden im Glauben an den Herrn und wagen umso kühner, das Wort furchtlos zu sagen.
and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.
Einige verkünden Christus zwar aus Neid und Streitsucht, andere aber in guter Absicht.
Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will;
Die einen verkünden Christus aus Liebe, weil sie wissen, dass ich zur Verteidigung des Evangeliums bestimmt bin,
the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel;
die andern aus Streitsucht, nicht in redlicher Gesinnung; womit sie meinen Fesseln weitere Bedrängnis hinzufügen möchten.
the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment.
Aber was liegt daran? Auf jede Weise, ob vorgetäuscht oder in Wahrheit, wird Christus verkündet und darüber freue ich mich. Doch ich werde mich auch weiterhin freuen;
What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice.
Yes, and I will rejoice,
Yes, and I will rejoice,
denn ich weiß: Das wird zu meiner Rettung führen durch euer Gebet und durch die Hilfe des Geistes Jesu Christi.
for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
Denn ich erwarte und hoffe, dass ich in keiner Hinsicht beschämt werde, dass vielmehr Christus in aller Öffentlichkeit — wie immer, so auch jetzt — verherrlicht werden wird in meinem Leibe, ob ich lebe oder sterbe.
according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
Denn für mich ist Christus das Leben und Sterben Gewinn.
To Live Is Christ
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
Wenn ich aber weiterleben soll, bedeutet das für mich fruchtbares Wirken. Was soll ich wählen? Ich weiß es nicht.
But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose.
Bedrängt werde ich von beiden Seiten: Ich habe das Verlangen, aufzubrechen und bei Christus zu sein — um wie viel besser wäre das!
But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better;
Aber euretwegen ist es notwendiger, dass ich am Leben bleibe.
yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.
Im Vertrauen darauf weiß ich, dass ich bleiben und bei euch allen verbleiben werde, um euch im Glauben zu fördern und zu erfreuen,
Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith,
damit ihr euch in Christus Jesus umso mehr meiner rühmen könnt, wenn ich wieder zu euch komme.
so that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again.
Vor allem: Lebt als Gemeinde so, wie es dem Evangelium Christi entspricht! Ob ich komme und euch sehe oder ob ich fern bin, ich möchte hören, dass ihr in dem einen Geist feststeht, einmütig für den Glauben an das Evangelium kämpft
Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
und euch in keinem Fall von euren Gegnern einschüchtern lasst. Das wird für sie ein Zeichen dafür sein, dass sie verloren sind und ihr gerettet werdet, ein Zeichen, das von Gott kommt.
in no way alarmed by your opponents — which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God.
Denn euch wurde die Gnade zuteil, für Christus da zu sein, also nicht nur an ihn zu glauben, sondern auch seinetwegen zu leiden.
For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,
