Da zog der Ammoniter Nahasch heran und belagerte Jabesch-Gilead. Die Männer von Jabesch sagten zu Nahasch: Schließ einen Vertrag mit uns, dann wollen wir dir dienen!
Saul Defeats the Ammonites
Now Nahash the Ammonite came up and besieged Jabesh-gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us and we will serve you.”

Der Ammoniter Nahasch erwiderte ihnen: Unter einer Bedingung will ich mit euch einen Vertrag schließen: Ich steche euch allen das rechte Auge aus und bringe damit Schande über ganz Israel.
But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “I will make it with you on this condition, that I will gouge out the right eye of every one of you, thus I will make it a reproach on all Israel.”
Die Ältesten von Jabesch sagten: Lass uns sieben Tage Zeit! Wir wollen Boten durch das ganze Gebiet von Israel schicken. Wenn sich niemand findet, der uns retten kann, werden wir zu dir hinauskommen.
The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Let us alone for seven days, that we may send messengers throughout the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to deliver us, we will come out to you.”
Als die Boten nach Gibea-Saul kamen und die Sache dem Volk vortrugen, brach das ganze Volk in lautes Weinen aus.
Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and spoke these words in the hearing of the people, and all the people lifted up their voices and wept.
Saul kam gerade hinter seinen Rindern vom Feld her und fragte: Was haben denn die Leute, dass sie weinen? Sie erzählten ihm, was die Männer von Jabesch berichtet hatten.
Now behold, Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen, and he said, “What is the matter with the people that they weep?” So they related to him the words of the men of Jabesh.
Als Saul das hörte, kam der Geist Gottes über ihn und sein Zorn entbrannte heftig.
Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul mightily when he heard these words, and he became very angry.
Er ergriff ein Gespann Rinder und hieb es in Stücke, schickte die Stücke durch Boten in das ganze Gebiet von Israel und ließ sagen: Wer nicht hinter Saul und Samuel in den Kampf zieht, dessen Rindern soll es ebenso gehen. Da fiel der Schrecken des HERRN auf das ganze Volk und sie rückten aus wie ein Mann.
He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever does not come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” Then the dread of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out as one man.
Als Saul sie in Besek musterte, waren es dreihunderttausend Männer aus Israel und dreißigtausend Männer aus Juda.
He numbered them in Bezek; and the sons of Israel were 300,000, and the men of Judah 30,000.
Sie sagten zu den Boten, die gekommen waren: Folgendes sollt ihr den Männern von Jabesch-Gilead sagen: Morgen, wenn die Sonne am heißesten brennt, bekommt ihr Hilfe. Die Boten gingen heim und berichteten alles und die Männer von Jabesch freuten sich.
They said to the messengers who had come, “Thus you shall say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will have deliverance.’” So the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
Sie ließen Nahasch sagen: Morgen werden wir zu euch hinauskommen. Dann könnt ihr mit uns machen, was euch gefällt.
Then the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you.”
Am nächsten Morgen stellte Saul das Volk in drei Abteilungen auf. Um die Zeit der Morgenwache drangen sie mitten in das Lager ein. Sie hatten die Ammoniter bis zur Zeit der Mittagshitze geschlagen. Die übrig blieben, wurden zerstreut, sodass nicht einmal zwei von ihnen beieinander blieben.
The next morning Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp at the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
Da sagte das Volk zu Samuel: Wer hat damals gesagt: Soll etwa Saul als König über uns herrschen? Gebt diese Männer heraus, damit wir sie töten!
Then the people said to Samuel, “Who is he that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring the men, that we may put them to death.”
Saul aber sagte: An diesem Tag soll niemand getötet werden; denn heute hat der HERR Israel Hilfe gebracht.
But Saul said, “Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the LORD has accomplished deliverance in Israel.”
Samuel sagte zum Volk: Kommt, wir wollen nach Gilgal gehen und dort das Königtum erneuern.
Then Samuel said to the people, “Come and let us go to Gilgal and renew the kingdom there.”
Da ging das ganze Volk nach Gilgal. Sie machten dort in Gilgal Saul vor dem HERRN zum König, schlachteten dem HERRN Heilsopfer und Saul und alle Männer Israels waren voll Freude.
So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal. There they also offered sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
