Am dritten Fastentag zog Esther königliche Kleider an und ging in den inneren Hof des Palasts, der vor dem Thronsaal lag. Der König saß auf seinem Thron gegenüber dem Eingang.

Als er Esther im Hof stehen sah, freute er sich und streckte ihr das goldene Zepter entgegen. Da kam Esther auf ihn zu und berührte die Spitze des Zepters.
And it was so, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favour in his sight: and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand. So Esther drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.
Der König fragte sie: »Was hast du auf dem Herzen, Königin Esther? Ich will dir jeden Wunsch erfüllen, auch wenn du die Hälfte meines Königreichs forderst!«
Then said the king unto her, What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what is thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom.
Esther antwortete: »Wenn du es für gut hältst, mein König, dann sei heute zusammen mit Haman mein Gast bei dem Mahl, das ich für dich zubereiten ließ.«
And Esther answered, If it seem good unto the king, let the king and Haman come this day unto the banquet that I have prepared for him.
Xerxes befahl seinen Dienern: »Holt sofort Haman herbei! Wir wollen Esthers Einladung annehmen.« So kamen der König und Haman zu Esthers Festmahl.
Then the king said, Cause Haman to make haste, that he may do as Esther hath said. So the king and Haman came to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
Während sie Wein tranken, fragte der König Esther: »Nun, was hast du auf dem Herzen? Ich will dir jeden Wunsch erfüllen, auch wenn du die Hälfte meines Königreichs forderst.«
And the king said unto Esther at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.
Esther antwortete: »Ja, ich habe eine große Bitte an dich:
Then answered Esther, and said, My petition and my request is;
Wenn du mir eine Gunst erweisen willst, mein König, dann komm morgen noch einmal mit Haman zu einem festlichen Mahl, das ich für dich und für ihn geben möchte. Dann werde ich bestimmt sagen, was mein Wunsch ist.«
If I have found favour in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them, and I will do to morrow as the king hath said.
Haman war fröhlich und gut gelaunt, als er vom Mahl bei der Königin aufbrach. Er ging zurück durch den Palast und stieß dabei auf Mordechai, der nicht einmal vor ihm aufstand oder ihm sonst seine Achtung zeigte. Haman wurde wütend,

doch er beherrschte sich. Als er zu Hause war, ließ er seine Freunde und seine Frau Seresch zu sich kommen.
Nevertheless Haman refrained himself: and when he came home, he sent and called for his friends, and Zeresh his wife.
Dann prahlte er mit seinem großen Reichtum und mit seinen vielen Söhnen. Er erzählte, dass der König ihn zu einem mächtigen Mann gemacht hatte, dem alle anderen Beamten und führenden Männer untergeordnet waren.
And Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.
»Und heute«, fuhr er fort, »hat Königin Esther außer dem König nur noch mich zum Festmahl eingeladen! Auch morgen hat sie mich zusammen mit dem König zum Essen gebeten!
Haman said moreover, Yea, Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but myself; and to morrow am I invited unto her also with the king.
Aber das alles bedeutet mir überhaupt nichts, wenn der Jude Mordechai nicht bald aus dem Palast verschwindet.«
Yet all this availeth me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate.
Da schlugen ihm seine Frau und seine Freunde vor: »Lass einen Galgen aufrichten, der 25 Meter hoch ist! Und morgen früh bitte den König, dass er Mordechai daran aufhängen lässt! Dann kannst du gut gelaunt mit dem König das Festessen genießen.« Der Vorschlag gefiel Haman, und er ließ einen Galgen aufrichten.
Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him, Let a gallows be made of fifty cubits high, and to morrow speak thou unto the king that Mordecai may be hanged thereon: then go thou in merrily with the king unto the banquet. And the thing pleased Haman; and he caused the gallows to be made.
