Alle, die zur Gemeinschaft der Israeliten gehörten, zogen von Elim aus weiter. Am 15. Tag des 2. Monats nachdem sie Ägypten verlassen hatten, erreichten sie die Wüste Sin, die zwischen Elim und dem Berg Sinai liegt.
The LORD Provides Manna
Then they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt.

Bald fingen die Leute wieder an, sich über Mose und Aaron zu beschweren.
The whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.
Sie stöhnten: »Ach, hätte der HERR uns doch in Ägypten sterben lassen! Dort hatten wir wenigstens Fleisch zu essen und genug Brot, um satt zu werden. Ihr habt uns doch nur in diese Wüste gebracht, damit wir alle verhungern!«
The sons of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the LORD’S hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: »Du wirst sehen: Ich lasse Brot vom Himmel für euch regnen! Die Israeliten sollen morgens losgehen und so viel einsammeln, wie sie für den Tag brauchen, mehr nicht. Denn ich will sie auf die Probe stellen und herausfinden, ob sie mir gehorchen.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction.
Aber am sechsten Tag sollen sie doppelt so viel einsammeln wie sonst, um es für sich zuzubereiten.«
“On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.”
Darauf sagten Mose und Aaron zu den Israeliten: »Heute Abend werdet ihr erfahren, dass der HERR es war, der euch aus Ägypten herausgeführt hat,
So Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, “At evening you will know that the LORD has brought you out of the land of Egypt;
und morgen früh werdet ihr mit eigenen Augen seine Herrlichkeit sehen. Er hat eure Vorwürfe gehört. Denn wer sind wir schon, dass ihr euch über uns beschwert? Damit lehnt ihr euch nicht gegen uns auf, sondern gegen den HERRN!
and in the morning you will see the glory of the LORD, for He hears your grumblings against the LORD; and what are we, that you grumble against us?”
Trotzdem wird er euch abends Fleisch zu essen geben und am Morgen Brot genug. Er hat gehört, wie ihr ihn anklagt! Euer Murren richtet sich ja nicht gegen uns, sondern gegen den HERRN!«
The LORD Provides Meat
Moses said, “This will happen when the LORD gives you meat to eat in the evening, and bread to the full in the morning; for the LORD hears your grumblings which you grumble against Him. And what are we? Your grumblings are not against us but against the LORD.”
Mose beauftragte Aaron: »Ruf die ganze Gemeinschaft der Israeliten zusammen! Sie sollen vor den HERRN treten, denn er hat ihre Vorwürfe gehört.«
Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, ‘Come near before the LORD, for He has heard your grumblings.’”
Aaron richtete dies den Israeliten aus. Als sie sich versammelt hatten und zur Wüste hinüberschauten, erschien dort der HERR in seiner Herrlichkeit, mitten in einer Wolke.
It came about as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.
»Ich habe die Klagen der Israeliten gehört. Darum sag ihnen: Heute Abend, wenn es dämmert, werdet ihr Fleisch zu essen bekommen und morgen früh so viel Brot, wie ihr braucht. Daran sollt ihr erkennen, dass ich der HERR, euer Gott, bin!«
“I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the LORD your God.’”
Am selben Abend zogen Schwärme von Wachteln heran und ließen sich überall im Lager nieder. Und am nächsten Morgen lag Tau rings um das Lager.
So it came about at evening that the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.
Als er verdunstet war, blieben auf dem Wüstenboden feine Körner zurück, die aussahen wie Reif.
When the layer of dew evaporated, behold, on the surface of the wilderness there was a fine flake-like thing, fine as the frost on the ground.
Die Israeliten entdeckten sie und fragten sich: »Was ist das bloß?« Nie zuvor hatten sie so etwas gesehen. Mose erklärte ihnen: »Dies ist das Brot, das euch der HERR zu essen gibt.
When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat.
Der HERR hat angeordnet: Jeder von euch soll so viel sammeln, wie er für seine Familie braucht, einen Krug von zweieinhalb Litern für jede Person, die in seinem Zelt lebt.«
“This is what the LORD has commanded, ‘Gather of it every man as much as he should eat; you shall take an omer apiece according to the number of persons each of you has in his tent.’”
Die Israeliten hielten sich daran und lasen die Körner auf, einer mehr, der andere weniger.
The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much and some little.
Doch als sie es zu Hause maßen, hatte der nicht zu viel, der viel eingesammelt hatte, und wer nur wenig aufgelesen hatte, dem fehlte nichts. Jeder hatte genauso viel mitgenommen, wie er für seine Familie brauchte.
When they measured it with an omer, he who had gathered much had no excess, and he who had gathered little had no lack; every man gathered as much as he should eat.
Mose befahl: »Hebt nichts davon bis zum nächsten Morgen auf!«
Moses said to them, “Let no man leave any of it until morning.”
Einige Israeliten aber hielten sich nicht daran und ließen etwas übrig. Am nächsten Morgen war es voller Würmer und stank. Mose wurde zornig auf sie.
But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and became foul; and Moses was angry with them.
So lasen die Israeliten jeden Morgen die Körner auf, jeder so viel, wie er zum Essen brauchte. Später, wenn es heiß wurde, schmolz der Rest am Boden und verschwand.
They gathered it morning by morning, every man as much as he should eat; but when the sun grew hot, it would melt.
Am sechsten Tag kam doppelt so viel Nahrung zusammen wie sonst — fünf Liter für jeden. Die führenden Männer Israels gingen zu Mose und sprachen ihn darauf an.
The Sabbath Observed
Now on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. When all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses,
Mose erklärte ihnen: »Der HERR hat angeordnet: Morgen sollt ihr den Sabbat feiern, den Ruhetag, der ganz dem HERRN geweiht ist. Backt heute aus den Körnern Brot, oder kocht sie, ganz wie ihr wollt. Was übrig bleibt, hebt für morgen auf!«
then he said to them, “This is what the LORD meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over put aside to be kept until morning.”
Das taten die Israeliten. Und diesmal war die Speise nicht verdorben wie sonst und enthielt auch keine Würmer.
So they put it aside until morning, as Moses had ordered, and it did not become foul nor was there any worm in it.
Mose befahl: »Esst heute, was von gestern übrig ist, denn heute halten wir den Ruhetag, der dem HERRN geweiht ist. In der Wüste werdet ihr nichts finden!
Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to the LORD; today you will not find it in the field.
Sechs Tage lang könnt ihr die Körner sammeln, aber am siebten Tag, dem Sabbat, wird nichts da sein.«
“Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be none.”
Trotzdem versuchten einige Israeliten, am siebten Tag Körner zu sammeln. Doch sie fanden nichts.
It came about on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none.
Da sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Wie lange weigert ihr euch noch, meine Gebote und Weisungen zu befolgen?
Then the LORD said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My instructions?
Denkt daran, dass ich euch den siebten Tag als Ruhetag gegeben habe; darum versorge ich euch am sechsten Tag mit der doppelten Menge Nahrung. Geht also am Sabbat nicht los, um Körner zu sammeln, sondern bleibt in euren Zelten!«
“See, the LORD has given you the sabbath; therefore He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain every man in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.”
Daraufhin hielt das Volk den siebten Tag als Ruhetag ein.
So the people rested on the seventh day.
Die Israeliten nannten die Körner »Manna«. Sie waren weiß wie Koriandersamen und schmeckten gebacken wie Honigkuchen.
The house of Israel named it manna, and it was like coriander seed, white, and its taste was like wafers with honey.
Mose sagte zu den Israeliten: »Der HERR hat befohlen, einen Krug voll Manna für eure Nachkommen aufzubewahren. Sie sollen sehen, womit er euch in der Wüste ernährt hat, nachdem er euch aus Ägypten befreit hatte.«
Then Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded, ‘Let an omerful of it be kept throughout your generations, that they may see the bread that I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’”
Dann wies Mose Aaron an: »Füll zweieinhalb Liter Manna in einen Krug und bewahre es im Heiligtum des HERRN auf, damit es für die kommenden Generationen erhalten bleibt!«
Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put an omerful of manna in it, and place it before the LORD to be kept throughout your generations.”
Aaron gehorchte und stellte den Krug mit dem Manna ins Heiligtum vor die Bundeslade.
As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the Testimony, to be kept.
Die Israeliten lebten vierzig Jahre lang von Manna, bis sie an der Grenze Kanaans besiedeltes Land erreichten.
The sons of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.
