Genau am 1. Tag des 3. Monats nachdem die Israeliten Ägypten verlassen hatten, erreichten sie die Wüste Sinai.

Sie waren von Refidim aufgebrochen und schlugen nun in der Wüste, am Fuß des Berges Sinai, ihr Lager auf.
For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.
Mose bestieg den Berg, um Gott zu begegnen. Der HERR rief ihm vom Berg aus zu: »Richte den Israeliten, den Nachkommen von Jakob, diese Botschaft von mir aus:
And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;
Ihr habt selbst gesehen, was ich mit den Ägyptern gemacht habe. Ich habe euch sicher hierher zu mir gebracht, wie ein Adler, der seine Jungen trägt.
Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.
Wenn ihr nun auf mich hört und euch an den Bund haltet, den ich mit euch schließen will, dann werdet ihr mir mehr bedeuten als alle anderen Völker. Mir gehört die ganze Welt, aber ihr seid in besonderer Weise mein Eigentum.
Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
Ja, ihr sollt ein heiliges Volk sein, das allein mir gehört. Als königliche Priester sollt ihr mir dienen! Sag dies den Israeliten weiter!«
And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
Mose ging zurück, rief die Sippenoberhäupter des Volkes zusammen und erzählte ihnen, was der HERR ihm aufgetragen hatte.
And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him.
Das ganze Volk Israel war sich einig: »Wir wollen alles tun, was der HERR befiehlt!« Mose überbrachte ihre Entscheidung dem HERRN.
And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.
Nachdem er berichtet hatte, was die Israeliten geantwortet hatten, sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Ich werde in einer dichten Wolke zu dir kommen und so mit dir sprechen, dass auch das Volk es hört. Es soll nie wieder einen Zweifel geben, dass du in meinem Auftrag redest.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.
Geh nun wieder zurück! Die Israeliten sollen sich heute und morgen darauf vorbereiten, mir zu begegnen. Sie sollen ihre Kleider waschen
And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes,
und sich am dritten Tag bereithalten. Denn an diesem Tag werde ich vor aller Augen auf den Berg Sinai herabkommen.
And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.
Zieh eine Grenze rings um den Berg, und warne die Leute davor, sie zu überschreiten! Sie dürfen ihn nicht besteigen und sich auch nicht am Fuß des Berges aufhalten. Wer dem Berg zu nahe kommt, muss sterben:
And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death:
Er soll gesteinigt oder mit Pfeilen erschossen werden. Das Gleiche gilt für die Tiere, sie dürfen nicht am Leben bleiben! Erst wenn das Widderhorn lang anhaltend ertönt, dürfen die Israeliten auf den Berg kommen.«
There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.
Wieder stieg Mose vom Berg herunter; er sorgte dafür, dass die Leute ihre Kleider wuschen und sich darauf vorbereiteten, Gott zu begegnen.
And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.
»Haltet euch am dritten Tag bereit«, befahl er ihnen, »und so lange soll niemand von euch mit seiner Frau schlafen!«
And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not at your wives.
Früh am Morgen des dritten Tages begann es, zu donnern und zu blitzen. Eine dichte Wolke umhüllte den Berg, und man hörte den lauten Klang eines Widderhorns. Die Israeliten im Lager zitterten vor Angst.
And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.
Mose führte sie aus dem Lager, Gott entgegen, und sie stellten sich am Fuß des Berges auf.
And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.
Der Berg Sinai war in dichten Rauch gehüllt, denn der HERR war im Feuer herabgekommen. Rauch stieg auf wie aus einem Schmelzofen, und der ganze Berg bebte.

And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

Das Horn ertönte immer lauter. Mose redete, und Gott antwortete ihm mit lauter Stimme.
And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.
So kam der HERR herab auf den Gipfel des Berges Sinai. Von dort rief er Mose zu sich, und Mose stieg auf den Berg.
And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.
Doch der HERR befahl ihm: »Geh sofort wieder hinunter und schärfe dem Volk ein, sie sollen ja nicht die Grenze überschreiten, um mich zu sehen! Wenn sie es trotzdem tun, werden viele von ihnen sterben.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish.
Auch die Priester sollen sich reinigen, bevor sie sich mir nähern, sonst ist ihr Leben in Gefahr!«
And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.
Mose erwiderte: »Das Volk kann gar nicht auf den Berg Sinai steigen. Du hast uns ja schon gewarnt und befohlen, eine Grenze um den Berg zu ziehen, weil er heilig ist.«
And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.
Doch der HERR befahl: »Steig trotzdem hinunter und komm zusammen mit Aaron wieder herauf. Die Priester und das Volk dürfen die Grenze nicht überschreiten, sonst bricht mein Zorn gegen sie los!«
And the LORD said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them.
