In diesem Buch sind die Worte von Amos aufgeschrieben, einem Schafzüchter aus dem Dorf Tekoa. Zwei Jahre vor dem großen Erdbeben offenbarte ihm Gott, was er mit dem Nordreich Israel vorhatte. Damals regierte in Juda König Usija, und in Israel herrschte Jerobeam, der Sohn von Joasch.

Amos verkündete dem Volk: »Mächtig wie das Brüllen eines Löwen ertönt die Stimme des HERRN vom Berg Zion in Jerusalem. Da vertrocknen die saftigen Weiden der Hirten, und die Wälder auf dem Gipfel des Karmel verdorren.

So spricht der HERR: Die Leute von Damaskus begehen ein abscheuliches Verbrechen nach dem anderen. Sie haben die Bewohner von Gilead wie mit einem eisernen Dreschschlitten niedergewalzt und zermalmt. Das werde ich nicht ungestraft lassen!

Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they have threshed Gilead with implements of iron.

Ich brenne die Paläste nieder, die König Hasaël und König Ben-Hadad errichtet haben.
But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael,
Which shall devour the palaces of Ben-Hadad.

Ich zerschmettere die Riegel an den Stadttoren von Damaskus und töte die Herrscher von Bikat-Awen (›Unrechtstal‹) und Bet-Eden (›Freudenhaus‹). Die Bevölkerung von Syrien wird nach Kir verschleppt. Darauf gebe ich, der HERR, mein Wort!
So spricht der HERR: Die Leute von der Philisterstadt Gaza begehen ein abscheuliches Verbrechen nach dem anderen. Sie haben die Einwohner ganzer Dörfer gefangen genommen und an die Edomiter verkauft. Das werde ich nicht ungestraft lassen!

Ich brenne die Stadtmauern von Gaza nieder, seine Paläste werden ein Raub der Flammen.

Die Herrscher von Aschdod und Aschkelon bringe ich um, und auch die Stadt Ekron bekommt meine Macht zu spüren. Die Philister, die dann noch übrig geblieben sind, finden den Tod. Darauf gebe ich, Gott, der HERR, mein Wort!

So spricht der HERR: Die Leute von Tyrus begehen ein abscheuliches Verbrechen nach dem anderen. Sie haben ihren Freundschaftsbund mit Israel gebrochen und die Einwohner ganzer Dörfer an die Edomiter verkauft. Das werde ich nicht ungestraft lassen!

So spricht der HERR: Die Leute von Edom begehen ein abscheuliches Verbrechen nach dem anderen. Sie haben die Israeliten, ihr Brudervolk, erbarmungslos bekämpft und unschuldiges Blut vergossen. Ihr Hass kennt keine Grenzen, ständig führen sie Krieg gegen mein Volk. Das werde ich nicht ungestraft lassen!

And cast off all pity;
His anger tore perpetually,
And he kept his wrath forever.

Ich brenne Teman nieder, und auch die Paläste der Hauptstadt Bozra werden ein Raub der Flammen.

So spricht der HERR: Die Leute von Ammon begehen ein abscheuliches Verbrechen nach dem anderen. Sie führten Krieg, um ihre Herrschaft auszudehnen, sie ließen sogar schwangeren Frauen im Gebiet von Gilead den Bauch aufschlitzen. Das werde ich nicht ungestraft lassen!

I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they ripped open the women with child in Gilead,
That they might enlarge their territory.
“For three transgressions of the people of Ammon, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,

Die Mauern ihrer Hauptstadt Rabba lege ich in Schutt und Asche, ihre Paläste werden ein Raub der Flammen. Dann ertönt überall das Kriegsgeschrei, und die Schlacht tobt wie ein verheerender Sturm.
