Der HERR ließ einige Völker im Land Kanaan bleiben, um Israel auf die Probe zu stellen. Auch wollte er die neue Generation lehren, wie man Krieg führt. Denn sie hatte die Eroberung Kanaans nicht miterlebt. Folgende Völker wohnten weiter im Land:
Idolatry Leads to Servitude
Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to test Israel by them (that is, all who had not experienced any of the wars of Canaan;

die Philister mit ihren fünf Fürsten, die Kanaaniter und Sidonier und alle Hiwiter im Libanongebirge zwischen dem Berg Baal-Hermon und der Gegend von Hamat.
These nations are: the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites who lived in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath.
Durch sie wollte der HERR die Israeliten prüfen und sehen, ob sie seine Gebote befolgten, die er ihren Vorfahren durch Mose gegeben hatte.
They were for testing Israel, to find out if they would obey the commandments of the LORD, which He had commanded their fathers through Moses.
Die Israeliten lebten mitten unter den Kanaanitern, Hetitern, Amoritern, Perisitern, Hiwitern und Jebusitern.
The sons of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites;
Sie vermischten sich mit diesen Völkern und dienten ihren Götzen.
and they took their daughters for themselves as wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
Sie taten, was dem HERRN missfiel, vergaßen ihn und verehrten den Gott Baal und die Göttin Aschera.
The sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth.
Da wurde der HERR zornig auf sein Volk und gab es in die Gewalt Kuschan-Rischatajims, des Königs von Nord-Mesopotamien. Acht Jahre lang wurde es von ihm unterdrückt.
Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, so that He sold them into the hands of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the sons of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.
Als die Israeliten zum HERRN um Hilfe schrien, schenkte er ihnen einen Befreier: Otniël, den Sohn von Kenas, den jüngeren Bruder von Kaleb.
The First Judge Delivers Israel
When the sons of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the sons of Israel to deliver them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
Der Geist des HERRN kam über Otniël, und so wurde er zum Richter für das Volk Israel. Er führte das israelitische Heer in die Schlacht, und der HERR half ihm, Kuschan-Rischatajim, den König von Nord-Mesopotamien, zu besiegen.
The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. When he went out to war, the LORD gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand, so that he prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.
Vierzig Jahre lang herrschte Frieden. Dann starb Otniël, der Sohn von Kenas,
Then the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
und die Israeliten taten wieder, was dem HERRN missfiel. Darum ließ er Eglon, den König von Moab, zu einem mächtigen Feind Israels werden.
Now the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD. So the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.
Eglon verbündete sich mit den Ammonitern und Amalekitern, führte Krieg gegen die Israeliten und besiegte sie. Er nahm die Palmenstadt Jericho ein
And he gathered to himself the sons of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and defeated Israel, and they possessed the city of the palm trees.
und unterwarf Israel achtzehn Jahre lang.
The sons of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
Die Israeliten schrien zum HERRN um Hilfe, und wieder gab er ihnen einen Befreier: Ehud, den Sohn von Gera aus dem Stamm Benjamin, einen Linkshänder. Ihn sandten die Israeliten zum Moabiterkönig Eglon, um den Tribut zu entrichten.
Ehud Delivers from Moab
But when the sons of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for them, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. And the sons of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.
Ehud fertigte ein zweischneidiges Schwert an, das etwa 30 Zentimeter lang war, und schnallte es sich an der rechten Seite um. Mit der Waffe unter seinem Gewand versteckt,
Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his cloak.
brachte er den Tribut zu König Eglon, der ein sehr dicker Mann war.
He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.
Dann schickte er die Männer fort, die ihn als Lastträger begleitet hatten.
It came about when he had finished presenting the tribute, that he sent away the people who had carried the tribute.
Auch er verließ den Palast und ging in Richtung Gilgal. Als er dort die Stelle erreichte, wo die Götterstatuen standen, kehrte er noch einmal zu Eglon zurück. Der König saß gerade im kühlen Obergemach, das nur für ihn bestimmt war. Ehud trat ein und sagte zu ihm: »Ich habe eine geheime Botschaft für dich!« »Lasst uns allein!«, befahl der König seinen Dienern. Als sie hinausgegangen waren, sagte Ehud: »Die Botschaft, die ich für dich habe, ist von Gott!« Eglon stand auf.
But he himself turned back from the idols which were at Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” And he said, “Keep silence.” And all who attended him left him.
Da packte Ehud mit der linken Hand das Schwert, das er an der rechten Seite trug, zog es hervor und stieß es Eglon in den Bauch.
Ehud stretched out his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh and thrust it into his belly.
Die Klinge drang so tief ein, dass das Fett den Griff umschloss und die Spitze zwischen den Beinen wieder herauskam. Ehud ließ das Schwert stecken
The handle also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the sword out of his belly; and the refuse came out.
und trat in die Halle hinaus. Er schloss die Tür, sperrte sie zu
Then Ehud went out into the vestibule and shut the doors of the roof chamber behind him, and locked them.
und floh. Bald darauf kamen Eglons Diener und merkten, dass der Raum verschlossen war. »Der König muss sicher gerade austreten«, sagten sie zueinander
When he had gone out, his servants came and looked, and behold, the doors of the roof chamber were locked; and they said, “He is only relieving himself in the cool room.”
und warteten eine Weile, doch die Tür ging nicht auf. Schließlich kam es ihnen merkwürdig vor. Sie holten den Schlüssel und öffneten das Obergemach. Dort fanden sie den König tot am Boden liegen.
They waited until they became anxious; but behold, he did not open the doors of the roof chamber. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their master had fallen to the floor dead.
Ehud aber war entkommen, während die Diener gewartet hatten. Er hatte bereits die Götterstatuen bei Gilgal hinter sich gelassen und floh weiter nach Seïra.
Now Ehud escaped while they were delaying, and he passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah.
Dort im Gebirge Ephraim ließ er das Horn blasen, um die Israeliten zur Schlacht zu versammeln. Sie folgten ihm ins Jordantal.
It came about when he had arrived, that he blew the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was in front of them.
»Mir nach!«, rief er. »Der HERR gibt euch den Sieg über die Moabiter!« Sie zogen mit Ehud hinab und besetzten die Jordanübergänge, um den Feinden den Fluchtweg abzuschneiden.
He said to them, “Pursue them, for the LORD has given your enemies the Moabites into your hands.” So they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan opposite Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross.
Dann kämpften sie gegen die Moabiter und töteten an die 10.000 gute, erfahrene Soldaten, keiner entkam.
They struck down at that time about ten thousand Moabites, all robust and valiant men; and no one escaped.
So mussten sich die Moabiter der Macht der Israeliten beugen, und achtzig Jahre lang herrschte Frieden.
So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land was undisturbed for eighty years.
Nach Ehud gab es einen weiteren Mann, der Israel vor seinen Feinden rettete: Schamgar, den Sohn von Anat. Er tötete 600 Philister, nur mit einem Stock bewaffnet, den man sonst zum Viehtreiben benutzte.
Shamgar Delivers from Philistines
After him came Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad; and he also saved Israel.
