Isaac Blesses Jacob
When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim so that he could not see, he called Esau his older son and said to him, “My son”; and he answered, “Here I am.”

Als Isaak alt geworden und seine Augen zu schwach waren, um noch etwas zu sehen, rief er seinen älteren Sohn Esau und sagte zu ihm: Mein Sohn! Er antwortete: Hier bin ich.
He said, “Behold, I am old; I do not know the day of my death.
Da sagte Isaak: Sieh! Ich bin alt geworden. Ich weiß nicht, wann ich sterbe.
Now then, take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me,
Nimm jetzt dein Jagdgerät, deinen Köcher und deinen Bogen, geh aufs Feld und jag mir ein Wild!
and prepare for me delicious food, such as I love, and bring it to me so that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die.”
Bereite mir dann ein leckeres Mahl, wie ich es gern mag, und bring es mir! Dann will ich essen, damit meine Lebenskraft dich segne, bevor ich sterbe.
Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game and bring it,
Rebekka hatte gehört, was Isaak seinem Sohn Esau gesagt hatte. Als Esau zur Jagd aufs Feld gegangen war, um ein Wild zu jagen und herbeizuschaffen,
Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “I heard your father speak to your brother Esau,
sagte Rebekka zu ihrem Sohn Jakob: Siehe, ich habe gehört, wie dein Vater zu deinem Bruder Esau gesagt hat:
‘Bring me game and prepare for me delicious food, that I may eat it and bless you before the Lord before I die.’
Bring mir ein Wild und bereite mir ein leckeres Mahl! Dann will ich essen und dich vor dem HERRN segnen, bevor ich sterbe.
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice as I command you.
Jetzt aber, mein Sohn, hör genau zu, was ich dir auftrage:
Go to the flock and bring me two good young goats, so that I may prepare from them delicious food for your father, such as he loves.
Geh zur Herde und bring mir von dort zwei schöne Ziegenböckchen! Ich will damit ein leckeres Mahl für deinen Vater zubereiten, wie er es gern mag.
And you shall bring it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies.”
Bring es deinem Vater! Dann wird er essen, damit er dich vor seinem Tod segnet.
But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Behold, my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man.
Jakob antwortete seiner Mutter Rebekka: Sieh, mein Bruder Esau ist behaart und ich habe eine glatte Haut.
Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be mocking him and bring a curse upon myself and not a blessing.”
Vielleicht betastet mich mein Vater; dann wäre ich in seinen Augen wie einer, der sich über ihn lustig macht, und ich brächte Fluch über mich statt Segen.
His mother said to him, “Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, bring them to me.”
Seine Mutter entgegnete: Dein Fluch komme auf mich, mein Sohn. Hör auf mich, geh und hol mir die Böckchen!
So he went and took them and brought them to his mother, and his mother prepared delicious food, such as his father loved.
Da ging er hin, holte sie und brachte sie seiner Mutter. Sie bereitete ein leckeres Mahl zu, wie es sein Vater gern mochte.
Then Rebekah took the best garments of Esau her older son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son.
Dann holte Rebekka die kostbaren Gewänder ihres älteren Sohnes Esau, die bei ihr im Haus waren, und zog sie ihrem jüngeren Sohn Jakob an.
And the skins of the young goats she put on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.
Die Felle der Ziegenböckchen legte sie um seine Hände und um seinen glatten Hals.
And she put the delicious food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
Dann gab sie das leckere Essen und das Brot, das sie zubereitet hatte, ihrem Sohn Jakob in die Hand.
So he went in to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”
Er ging zu seinem Vater hinein und sagte: Mein Vater! Er antwortete: Hier bin ich! Wer bist du, mein Sohn?
Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me; now sit up and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.”
Jakob entgegnete seinem Vater: Ich bin Esau, dein Erstgeborener. Ich habe getan, wie du mir gesagt hast. Setz dich auf, iss von meinem Wildbret, damit deine Lebenskraft mich segne!
But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” He answered, “Because the Lord your God granted me success.”
Da sagte Isaak zu seinem Sohn: Wie hast du nur so schnell etwas finden können, mein Sohn? Er antwortete: Der HERR, dein Gott, hat es mir entgegenlaufen lassen.
Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, to know whether you are really my son Esau or not.”
Da sagte Isaak zu Jakob: Komm näher heran! Ich will dich betasten, mein Sohn, ob du wirklich mein Sohn Esau bist oder nicht.
So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, who felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”
Jakob trat zu seinem Vater Isaak hin. Isaak betastete ihn und sagte: Die Stimme ist zwar Jakobs Stimme, die Hände aber sind Esaus Hände.
And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands. So he blessed him.
Er erkannte ihn nicht, denn Jakobs Hände waren behaart wie die seines Bruders Esau, und so segnete er ihn.
He said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He answered, “I am.”
Er fragte: Bist du es, mein Sohn Esau? Er sagte: Ich bin es.
Then he said, “Bring it near to me, that I may eat of my son’s game and bless you.” So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.
Da sagte Isaak: Bring es mir! Ich will von dem Wildbret meines Sohnes essen, damit dich meine Lebenskraft segne. Jakob brachte es ihm und Isaak aß. Dann reichte er ihm auch Wein und Isaak trank.
Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near and kiss me, my son.”
Nun sagte sein Vater Isaak zu ihm: Komm näher und küss mich, mein Sohn!
So he came near and kissed him. And Isaac smelled the smell of his garments and blessed him and said,
“See, the smell of my son
is as the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed!
“See, the smell of my son
is as the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed!
Er trat näher und küsste ihn. Isaak roch den Duft seiner Gewänder, er segnete ihn und sagte: Siehe, mein Sohn duftet wie das Feld, das der HERR gesegnet hat.
May God give you of the dew of heaven
and of the fatness of the earth
and plenty of grain and wine.
and of the fatness of the earth

Gott gebe dir vom Tau des Himmels, vom Fett der Erde, viel Korn und Most.
Let peoples serve you,
and nations bow down to you.
Be lord over your brothers,
and may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
Cursed be everyone who curses you,
and blessed be everyone who blesses you!”

Völker sollen dir dienen, Nationen sich vor dir niederwerfen. Sei Herr über deine Brüder. Die Söhne deiner Mutter sollen dir huldigen. Verflucht, wer dich verflucht. Gesegnet, wer dich segnet.
As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
Als Isaak Jakob gesegnet hatte und Jakob gerade von seinem Vater Isaak weggegangen war, kam sein Bruder Esau von der Jagd.
He also prepared delicious food and brought it to his father. And he said to his father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, that you may bless me.”
Auch er bereitete ein leckeres Mahl, brachte es seinem Vater und sagte zu ihm: Mein Vater richte sich auf und esse von dem Wildbret seines Sohnes, damit deine Lebenskraft mich dann segne!
His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” He answered, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”
Da fragte ihn sein Vater Isaak: Wer bist du? Er antwortete: Ich bin dein Sohn Esau, dein Erstgeborener.
Then Isaac trembled very violently and said, “Who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate it all before you came, and I have blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.”
Vor Schrecken überkam ihn ein heftiges Zittern und er fragte: Wer war es denn, der das Wild gejagt und es mir gebracht hat? Ich habe von allem gegessen, bevor du gekommen bist, und ich habe ihn gesegnet; gesegnet wird er auch bleiben.
As soon as Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, O my father!”
Als Esau die Worte seines Vaters hörte, schrie er heftig auf, aufs Äußerste verbittert, und sagte zu seinem Vater: Segne auch mich, Vater!
But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully, and he has taken away your blessing.”
Er entgegnete: Dein Bruder ist mit List gekommen und hat dir deinen Segen weggenommen.
Da sagte Esau: Hat man ihm nicht den Namen Jakob — Betrüger — gegeben? Er hat mich jetzt schon zweimal betrogen: Mein Erstgeburtsrecht hat er mir genommen, jetzt nimmt er mir auch noch den Segen. Dann sagte er: Hast du mir keinen Segen aufgehoben?
Isaac answered and said to Esau, “Behold, I have made him lord over you, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants, and with grain and wine I have sustained him. What then can I do for you, my son?”
Isaak antwortete und sagte zu Esau: Siehe, ich habe ihn zum Herrn über dich gemacht und alle seine Brüder habe ich ihm als Knechte gegeben. Auch mit Korn und Most habe ich ihn versorgt. Was kann ich da noch für dich tun, mein Sohn?
Esau said to his father, “Have you but one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father.” And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.
Da sagte Esau zu seinem Vater: Hattest du denn nur einen einzigen Segen, mein Vater? Segne auch mich, Vater! Und Esau erhob seine Stimme und weinte.
Sein Vater Isaak antwortete ihm und sagte ihm: Siehe, fern vom Fett der Erde musst du wohnen, fern vom Tau des Himmels droben.
By your sword you shall live,
and you shall serve your brother;
but when you grow restless
you shall break his yoke from your neck.”

Von deinem Schwert wirst du leben. Deinem Bruder wirst du dienen. Doch reißt du dich los, so schüttelst du ab sein Joch von deinem Nacken.
Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
Esau war dem Jakob Feind wegen des Segens, mit dem ihn sein Vater gesegnet hatte, und Esau sagte in seinem Herzen: Es werden die Tage der Trauer um meinen Vater kommen; dann werde ich meinen Bruder Jakob töten.
But the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you.
Als man Rebekka hinterbrachte, was ihr ältester Sohn Esau gesagt hatte, ließ sie Jakob, ihren jüngeren Sohn, rufen und sagte zu ihm: Siehe, dein Bruder Esau will sich an dir rächen und dich töten.
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban my brother in Haran
Nun aber, mein Sohn, hör auf mich! Mach dich auf und flieh zu meinem Bruder Laban nach Haran!
and stay with him a while, until your brother’s fury turns away —
Bleib einige Zeit bei ihm, bis sich der Groll deines Bruders gelegt hat!
until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereft of you both in one day?”
Wenn der Zorn deines Bruders von dir abgelassen und er vergessen hat, was du ihm angetan hast, werde ich dich von dort holen lassen. Warum soll ich euch beide an einem Tag verlieren?
Zu Isaak sagte Rebekka: Mir ist mein Leben verleidet wegen der Hetiterinnen. Wenn Jakob eine Frau von diesen Hetiterinnen, den Töchtern des Landes, nimmt, was liegt mir dann noch am Leben?
