Solomon’s Prayer for Wisdom
Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt. He took Pharaoh’s daughter and brought her into the city of David until he had finished building his own house and the house of the Lord and the wall around Jerusalem.

Salomo verschwägerte sich mit dem Pharao, dem König von Ägypten. Er nahm eine Tochter des Pharao zur Frau und brachte sie in die Davidstadt, bis er sein Haus, das Haus des HERRN und die Mauern rings um Jerusalem vollendet hatte.
The people were sacrificing at the high places, however, because no house had yet been built for the name of the Lord.
Das Volk opferte jedoch zu jener Zeit auf den Kulthöhen, weil dem Namen des HERRN noch kein Haus gebaut war.
Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places.
Salomo aber liebte den HERRN und befolgte die Satzungen seines Vaters David; nur brachte er auf den Kulthöhen Schlachtopfer und Rauchopfer dar.
And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.
So ging der König nach Gibeon, um dort zu opfern; denn hier war die größte Kulthöhe. Tausend Brandopfer pflegte Salomo auf jenen Altar zu legen.
At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.”
In Gibeon erschien der HERR dem Salomo nachts im Traum und forderte ihn auf: Sprich eine Bitte aus, die ich dir gewähren soll!
And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day.
Salomo antwortete: Du hast deinem Knecht David, meinem Vater, große Huld erwiesen; denn er lebte vor dir in Treue, in Gerechtigkeit und mit aufrichtigem Herzen. Du hast ihm diese große Huld bewahrt und ihm einen Sohn geschenkt, der heute auf seinem Thron sitzt.
And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in.
So hast du jetzt, HERR, mein Gott, deinen Knecht anstelle meines Vaters David zum König gemacht. Doch ich bin noch sehr jung und weiß nicht aus noch ein.
And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude.
Dein Knecht steht aber mitten in deinem Volk, das du erwählt hast: einem großen Volk, das man wegen seiner Menge nicht zählen und nicht schätzen kann.
Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”
Verleih daher deinem Knecht ein hörendes Herz, damit er dein Volk zu regieren und das Gute vom Bösen zu unterscheiden versteht! Wer könnte sonst dieses mächtige Volk regieren?
It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.
Es gefiel dem Herrn, dass Salomo diese Bitte aussprach.
And God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right,
Daher antwortete ihm Gott: Weil du gerade diese Bitte ausgesprochen hast und nicht um langes Leben, Reichtum oder um den Tod deiner Feinde, sondern um Einsicht gebeten hast, um auf das Recht zu hören,
behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.
werde ich deine Bitte erfüllen. Sieh, ich gebe dir ein so weises und verständiges Herz, dass keiner vor dir war und keiner nach dir kommen wird, der dir gleicht.
I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days.
Aber auch das, was du nicht erbeten hast, will ich dir geben: Reichtum und Ehre, sodass zu deinen Lebzeiten keiner unter den Königen dir gleicht.
And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.”
Wenn du auf meinen Wegen gehst, meine Gesetze und Gebote bewahrst wie dein Vater David, dann schenke ich dir ein langes Leben.
And Solomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.
Da erwachte Salomo und merkte, dass es ein Traum war. Als er nach Jerusalem kam, trat er vor die Bundeslade des Herrn, brachte Brand- und Heilsopfer dar und gab ein Festmahl für alle seine Diener.

The one woman said, “Oh, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth to a child while she was in the house.
Die eine sagte: Bitte, Herr, ich und diese Frau wohnen im gleichen Haus und ich habe dort in ihrem Beisein geboren.
Then on the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth. And we were alone. There was no one else with us in the house; only we two were in the house.
Am dritten Tag nach meiner Niederkunft gebar auch diese Frau. Wir waren beisammen; kein Fremder war bei uns im Haus, nur wir beide waren dort.
And this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him.
Nun starb der Sohn dieser Frau während der Nacht; denn sie hatte im Schlaf auf ihm gelegen.
And she arose at midnight and took my son from beside me, while your servant slept, and laid him at her breast, and laid her dead son at my breast.
Sie stand mitten in der Nacht auf, nahm mir mein Kind weg, während deine Magd schlief, und legte es an ihre Seite. Ihr totes Kind aber legte sie an meine Seite.
When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, he was dead. But when I looked at him closely in the morning, behold, he was not the child that I had borne.”
Als ich am Morgen aufstand, um mein Kind zu stillen, war es tot. Als ich es aber am Morgen genau ansah, war es nicht mein Kind, das ich geboren hatte.
But the other woman said, “No, the living child is mine, and the dead child is yours.” The first said, “No, the dead child is yours, and the living child is mine.” Thus they spoke before the king.
Da rief die andere Frau: Nein, mein Kind lebt und dein Kind ist tot. Doch die erste entgegnete: Nein, dein Kind ist tot und mein Kind lebt. So stritten sie vor dem König.
Then the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son that is alive, and your son is dead’; and the other says, ‘No; but your son is dead, and my son is the living one.’”
Da begann der König: Diese sagt: Mein Kind lebt und dein Kind ist tot! und jene sagt: Nein, dein Kind ist tot und mein Kind lebt.
And the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So a sword was brought before the king.
Und der König fuhr fort: Holt mir ein Schwert! Man brachte es vor den König.
And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other.”
Nun entschied er: Schneidet das lebende Kind entzwei und gebt eine Hälfte der einen und eine Hälfte der anderen!
Then the woman whose son was alive said to the king, because her heart yearned for her son, “Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means put him to death.” But the other said, “He shall be neither mine nor yours; divide him.”
Doch nun bat die Mutter des lebenden Kindes den König — es regte sich nämlich in ihr die mütterliche Liebe zu ihrem Kind: Bitte, Herr, gebt ihr das lebende Kind und tötet es nicht! Doch die andere rief: Es soll weder mir noch dir gehören. Zerteilt es!
Then the king answered and said, “Give the living child to the first woman, and by no means put him to death; she is his mother.”
Da befahl der König: Gebt jener das lebende Kind und tötet es nicht; denn sie ist seine Mutter.
And all Israel heard of the judgment that the king had rendered, and they stood in awe of the king, because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice.
Ganz Israel hörte von dem Urteil, das der König gefällt hatte, und sie schauten mit Ehrfurcht zu ihm auf; denn sie erkannten, dass die Weisheit Gottes in ihm war, wenn er Recht sprach.
